The man, the films, those blondes. Free DVD collection starting this Sunday
1: Nutbush City Limits
A raw dance groove topped off with an unforgettable squealing synthesizer
solo and the mighty force of nature that is Tina's voice. Although Ike would
probably claim that he was responsible Tina Turner's career, and undeniable
gave her her name, he was eclipsed by his own creation here as on so many of
their hits. This clip of the couple miming on a German pop show, with Ike
strumming rather disconsolately on an acoustic guitar while Tina struts her
not inconsiderable stuff, sums up everything there is to be said about this
flawed alliance.
2: River Deep Mountain
High
A stupendous, sweeping tsunami of sound. Reputedly the record that destroyed
Ike and Tina Turner's relationship even as it launched them as stars because
of producer Phil Spector's focus on Tina's voice to the exclusion of Ike's
musical input.
3: Ike and Tina's
revue - Opening music
The high energy introduction to the Turners' touring act at its zenith.
Guaranteed to bring the audience to an anticipatory high demonstrating Ike's
real talent - his mastery of showmanship.
4: I want to take you
higher
Composed by Sly Stone, another great American performer who squandered his
talents in a blizzard of cocaine, I want to take you higher was an
even bigger hit for Ike and Tina than it was for Stone's own band. This
performance shows Ike trying to replace Tina with a singer who, while
talented enough, can't quite reproduce the sheer star power of the girl from
Nutbush who entranced and influenced Mick Jagger and many other great stars
of the 60s.
5: Get Back
Here Ike and Tina distill some real southern funk from The Beatles'
back-to-basics rocker. Even when soloing on the guitar Ike was overlooked by
the cameras in favour of Ikettes and the ever-bewitching Tina.
6: Come Together
Another Beatles cover, and one that could have been written for Tina's raw
soul yell. The Ikettes shine again in this clip. The backing singers had
their own recording career at one point, which like Tina's was both driven
and ultimately destroyed by Ike's obsesion with control.
7: Ike at the Grammys,
2007
In latter years Ike Turner had been to a certain extent rehabilitated in the
public eye, with cameo appearances on a Gorillaz album and a grammy for his
solo album Risin' with the Blues. From the same year here's
a clip of Ike Turner and his band performing at the Montreux Jazz festival.
8: Ike and Tine Live
Medley
Another classic Ike and Tina performance. How Tina's hat stays on at the
epicentre of that whirlwind of energy is anybody's guess.
9: The Bayou Song
A rare downtempo excursion for the Revue here. It's tempting to read into
this performance the anguish of Tina's situation at the time, and Ike's
drug-fuelled indifference.
10: What's Love Got to
Do with It?
The film that changed the public's perception of Ike from an interesting, if
half-forgotten footnote in rock history to a wife-beating demon. He
protested long and loud that the scenes of domestic violence in the film
were exaggerated but there seems little doubt that, whether as a result of
his drug addiction, his traumatic childhood, or some innate pathology that
we will never understand he was a deeply flawed man.
