The television talent show winner Leona Lewis is poised to become the first
British woman to top the US pop chart for more than 20 years.
Not since Kim Wilde, who scored a transatlantic hit with her version of You
Keep Me Hangin’ On, has a British woman provided the song that all
America is humming.
The rise of Lewis, a former receptionist in Hackney, East London, has changed
all that, earning her membership of an exclusive club that Amy Winehouse and
Dame Shirley Bassey have yet to join.
Industry sources say that Bleeding Love, Lewis’s first US single, has
halted the charge of Madonna and bumped the R&B singer Usher off the top
of the Billboard Hot 100, after a surge in download sales. An endorsement by
Oprah Winfrey on nationwide television sent Lewis, 22, soaring to the top.
The Hot 100 will be unveiled in New York today.
Topping the US charts is no guarantee of longevity, however. Wilde did not
trouble the US compilers after her 1987 success and pursued a career in
gardening. Her predecessor, Sheena Easton, was briefly reinvented by Prince
as a sex symbol after her pomp in the early Eighties, but transferred her
talents to stage musicals.
American radio and the MTV network have become hostile to British rock and
pop, preferring “nu-metal”, rap and glamorous homegrown R&B
stars such as Beyoncé.
Most of Lewis’s new download-buying American fans do not know that she shot to
fame as the winner of ITV1’s X Factor in 2006, or even that she
is British. Bleeding Love was the biggest-selling British single last
year.
Simon Cowell, Lewis’s manager, took her to the US and negotiated a £5 million
album contract with the music mogul Clive Davis, who signed Whitney Houston.
She was sent to record with top US producers and a slick video designed for
MTV was filmed for Bleeding Love.
Lewis soon began appearing in US entertainment “ones to watch” lists. Her
breakthrough came this month with television appearances on The Tonight
Show with Jay Leno and Winfrey’s nationwide chatshow.
After earning a standing ovation with her Oprah performance, the host told
Lewis: “You’re the real-deal girl. Talk about a star is born.” Download and
mobile phone track sales soared.
A strong lineup of British female singers is now hoping to emulate Lewis.
There is a buzz over the Welsh singer Duffy, and Adele and Kate Nash are
also hoping to make inroads. Winehouse has sold 1.5 million copies of her Back
To Black album in the US, but has not topped the singles chart despite
her Grammy awards.

She didn't win any Brits because she doesn't sound British. Leona Lewis may be English but she sings like an American in an American style, she's the Tony Blair of the music world really. Personally I find her vocals hard to listen to, really grating in the same way that Whitney Houston was. It's all volume and no class at all. I hope she moves to America and stays there, they're very welcome to her.
For real class listen to Kate Rusby, now she IS English.

I suspect Leona is termed by some as "boring, awful, without personality etc because she's neither seen falling out of nightclubs drunk silly or in the some tabloids snorting the white stuff and making a fool of herself.
The results speak for themselves, I've personally struggled to like Bleeding love", I prefer Better in Time" but her quality is indisputable. 'Manufactured' or not the end product is what sells and she'll only be better in time

I cannot believe that some British commentators (Gloria, Glasgow & Nick, London) think Leona "awful" and "uninteresting". Do these people know the first thing about music and singing? Singing is not the same thing as performing, and Leona can sing. She might not yet be a good performer, but she is undoubtedly a singer.
Can Girls Aloud sign? Really sing? Could the Spice Girls sing? Absolutely not! But they could perform on stage. Perhaps the British have just gotten so used for so long to entertainers who can't sing, as long as they can prance around on a stage all doped up and half-naked, that they have forgotten what real singing is!

It's doesn't matter the fact she won a reality show, she's an amazing singer and has incredible songs on her album. She won that show for a reason. She has earned every bit of glory shes getting and she desearves it;)
Kyle, Nottingham (UK), England
leona is an awesome talent. my favourite song of hers - you bring me down - didnt even make it onto the album! when i listen to her she brings tears to my eyes. she does not just have range but a beautiful quality and emotion in her voice. i think singing well is an art - it matters, and should be valued rather than seen as superflous or even inauthentic. note also that the song was number 1 on USitunes before Oprah. it was number one on the worldwid chart and has been number 1 in 27 countris so far, 25 of which did not show xfactor. if you dont like her, so be it. but she stands for what is best about popular culture, the capacity to find stardom in the ordinary. my prediction is that leona will get grammys for her album and single - that she didnt get any brits will come across to the world for what was - silly snobbery, bad politics, fuzzy ears (oops, shes mixed-race, came from a talent show, doesnt do drugs, drink, make scenes in public, talk rather than sing her songs) go leona!
joani, london, uk
Nick, Leona is not "awful". She is very special, very beautiful and so very talented. It is clear that you have absolutely no idea of pure talent when you see it.
I fully endorse what Ley said.

In reply to Anne, there are plenty of fantastic singers out there including ones still waiting to be "discovered" but not all of them have had the exposure from being on reality TV. Take "Callaghan" for example. She has a far greater vocal range than Leona but unfortunately (or fortunately) hasn't gone down the cheesy reality TV route and equally hasn't come out of a manufactured stage school. I only hope that record labels in this country start appreciating the talent out there waiting to be discovered rather than always going for the easiest TV ratings winning option.
Jane, London,
Nick! Leona is not "awful".. she is humble and that is not something the Brits are used to!!
Well done Leona! you make us all proud!
Simone, Chichester, UK
Leona's not just about profile - this girl can sing plus she's not a drugged up idiot like most of the musicians around at the moment (not exactly the best role models). Bleeding Love was at Number 8 in the U.S. Singles chart before her Oprah performance so I think we can say that hard work on Leona's behalf, a good song and sheer determination from her record company to succeed attributed to that chart placing. Yes her performance on Oprah helped her exposure and lifted sales to Number One but so what - did you expect her to turn an opportunity like that down. Nobody forces anyone to go and buy someone's record. How about having a bit of a pride in a young singer who is living her dream. Well done Leona and any other British artist who can "crack" the States - long may it last!!
Ley, London,
She's awful and its all just about profile - she was on Oprah last week and even I know that. If she had not have been the song and her don't have the necessary quality to carry themselves.
Nick, London, England
Ok but MADONNA's excellent new single "4 minutes" has made the best entry for a single in the US top 40 airplay since june 2006. So what?
Didier, Brussels, Belgium
Although she has a lovely voice, she is boring and her songs are boring. Simon Cowell seems so in awe that someone on his show can actually sing that he believes his own hype about her being fantastic. She's a lovely girl with a lovely voice, but unfortunately she is just not that interesting to watch.
Gloria, Glasgow,
The reason is simple: she has an enviable range. Leona cannot be compared to the usual run of the mill, mediocre singers we seem to have in the UK --- singers who we are told are wonderful but our listening ear, suggest otherwise. They will remain nameless!
Annie, Cambridge, UK
