As finishing touches were being applied to the East London premiere of Madonna’s latest album, academics specialising in adoption at the University of Liverpool announced what they called The Madonna Effect – a phenomenon “in which parents in Africa surrender their children for adoption thinking they will enjoy a better life”.
Whatever context is applied to it, you felt like adding that The Madonna Effect – sure to accumulate now that she has set her sights on adopting in India – isn’t restricted to adoption. There’s a Madonna effect for almost everything she does. In the past week alone, the Swiss jewellers Chopard have been besieged with requests for replicas of the £500,000 knuckleduster rings exhibited on the sleeve of Hard Candy.
All of which is worth dwelling on, because how will The Madonna Effect play out when Hard Candy is released? It’s tempting even to theorise that Madonna has made it so that there won’t be much of an Effect.
Seemingly eager to relieve herself from the pressure of being imitated at every turn, Madonna’s 11th studio album finds her deploying a coterie of producers – Timbaland, Danja, Pharrell Williams – who have, in varying combinations, already done the same thing with Nelly Furtado, Britney Spears and Gwen Stefani. Naturally, this being Madonna, she has already filed the riposte before you made the criticism. On She’s Not Me, she makes the point that however any other woman attempts to match her, they don’t have the advantage of being Madonna. So, what’s the song like? Well, it’s like roughly two thirds of Hard Candy – a sequenced avalanche of beats in the sonic centre ground that, in the olden days, used to be occupied by tunes.
Far from being a problem, that’s how some of the most exciting pop music is assembled these days. Madonna’s instinct for a killer tune has pushed producers such as Stuart Price, Mirwais and William Orbit to career peaks. Given time here, Incredible and the Kanye West-assisted Beat Goes On will scrub up alongside some of her best – especially the latter’s nods to Detroit techno at its poppermost.
Justin Timberlake cameos on the new single 4 Minutes and three other songs, including the immediately excellent Miles Away – a collision of acoustic downstrokes and feverishly jaunty rhythm that verges on reggae.
When the songs work, it doesn’t much matter that Madonna is blazing a fourth-hand trail. After 25 years of reinvention, we can surely cut her slack in that department. But on Dance 2Night, She’s Not Me and Give It 2 Me, what surprises is how deferential Madonna is to her collaborators. Even the album’s showstopping ballad, The Devil Wouldn’t Recognise You succumbs to a default mode of vast beats.
By this late stage, you rather feel like you’re in your fifth hour at the Ambassador’s famous party. Great, but is there anything else on offer other than Ferrero sodding Rochers?
Only on the final song, Voices, does Madonna remember that her stock-in-trade is to assimilate the sound of a well-known producer and turn it into something else. Here, the sort of poignant, unresolved chords you might sooner hear on an early Serge Gainsbourg record accord with a more personal lyric, before a grandiloquent finale of bells and pipe organ sends us on our way.
Hard Candy is no disaster, but a little more of that wouldn’t have gone amiss.

I think the album is frankly mediocre. I think the overall impression of the album is lower than the overall impression of the likes of Aguilera, Estelle and even Gwen Stefani. Madonna needs to work harder at a studio album better even if that means working at it for 5 years before releasing it.
grant, cape town, South Africa
well i have been a lifelong fan and i think the last 2 albums have not been great with hard candy going down as her worst by far.... it is terrible... the art work is terrible....where r the good songs? not here. dig out like a prayer or ray of light.... nothing to see here move along now
juan bernal, brighton, england
I have to say I've been a Madonna fan since I can remember, and I've always followed her music, and she looks great, but this album doesn't have any edge what so ever, I hate to say it but even American Life had more edge and that's sad. "Madonna, shock me again"
Nick, NYC, USA
I think the album is fantastic. Outstanding tracks Devil Wouldn't Recognise, Voices, Incredible. Voices is very reminiscent of Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attak. Each song seems short and I was expecting more on each one - they all seem to have been cut bluntly at the end. The album is fantastic.
Martin, London, UK
I am a lifelong Madonna fan and I own all of her work. I really am enjoying Hard Candy. I cannot get the song "Heartbeat" out of my head. Reminds me of her carefree 80's sound. The songs are fresh and fun with a hiphop beat.
I highly recommend the sweet treat that Hard Candy is.
Cheryl, Nova Scotia,
I got into Madonna again in the album "music", after that I was really into Nelly Furtado's album with Timbaland... And Madonna's album is "lightly" put... a dissapointment, the sounds are there but there aren't songs. It seem like it was produced to play on party by DJ... NO FEELING NO WRITING...
Bruce Harms, Rotterdam, Netherlands
Wow - great album.
Johnny, woodbury, usa
Everyone is downloading, sharing & talking about her album and it's not even out. I'd say she's done it once again.
Damien, montreal,
I don't understand... This is not a good album of Madonna. I don't like this stuff at all and hope she will do something better.
Linda Galard, New York,
Madonna has once again shown why she is #1. The album is a great mix of pop, dance & tribal. Taste her candy and you will be hooked. Enter the "Candy Shop" and you will leave with "Voices" ringing in your head saying "Incredible" I want to "Dance 2Night".
John, brisbane, australia
Another masterful record from pop music's greatest showoff.
Jeff, Boston, USA
I've heard about 8 tracks and 4 of them are remarkable, especially "She's Not Me," "Incredible," and "Miles Away" rank with her best work.
The ongoing quality of Madonna's music is what continues to make her relevant. No matter who she works with she always sounds like a champ even in mid-life.
Jill, New York, USA
3 stars hardly assesses the worth of this record. I've heard about 5 tracks, after several listens they are all remarkably well-conceived.
After all these years, no-one can touch the lady. She should be basking in retirement. Instead she continues to churn out 1st-rate pop concoctions still.
Amber, Miami, USA
After listening to the entire album, I am very unimpressed. After the fifth track I felt nauseated, like I had eaten too much "hard candy". Every song sounds similar. Very boring and predictable.
Damon, Los Angeles,
I'm really looking forward to this album. Much of the press that's coming out is pretty much what you'd expect, really, but as a Madonna fan, I read this review at www.aarondarc.com that made me feel happier about getting it, this weekend!
Adam, Sydney , Australia
i'm sick of hearing about her age too. this is going to be a much better album than even i thought. the leaked tracks are terrific. that's what should be eminent.
judy, folsom,
Why are people so obsessed with Madonna's age, and would they care so much if she were a man? Seems like the old double standard is still around.
Marina72, Brighton,
Well I have to say that Madonna's age doesn't count....I mean OK she is almost 50 but people she has started since 80's and she is still in the top. She is a phenomenon in the music industry...Her live performances are great ...we have all grown up with Madonna's songs. I do not believe that there is anyone that haven't learnt by heart one Madonna's song.
George, Athens,
I saw Madonna at Wembley Stadium back in the 80s. If it had not been for her fantastic backing entourage she would have been a complete mediocrity. She is totally overhyped and quite frankly I find her boring when she tries to shock her audience. Grow up Madge, you're nearly 50.
Linda, Fife,
Madonna? More like Grandma-donna, looking at this hideous picture.
Valerie, London, UK
Why is it that even after Madonna has been proving her endless talents and staying power for more than 25 years, journalists still think they have the right to tie her to the whipping post?
The woman is phenomenal and I don't think there will be anyone in this world who works as hard for a very long time to come, if ever.
Madonna and Hard Candy rocks!
Ben G, London, UK
"Kanye West assisted 'Beat Goes On'"? Was this not Pharrell?
jim, brurn, Au
Madonna = Yawn.
The woman is desperate for a hit in the States and has completely sold out. Instead of being about pop music, a Madonna album is now more about who has produced it and this time Madonna has missed the boat - it sailed about 3 years ago !
Martyn , London , UK
Madonna, U2, R.E.M. Dull, dull, dull.
Phil, Padova, Italia
I much preferred Madonna when she was a tart singing about loose morals and parading up and down the road naked. Now that she has found whatever religon she has baught her way into this week, what ever cause she wants to wear a tee-shirt about that will make her look like she gives a damn I find her music quite like I find her, it makes me physically sick.
Steve Williamson, Manchester, UK
i wonder if there are vocal surprises on the album, meaning Madonna reaching high notes like during Evita period. No one is mentioning her voice, how comes? Is there nothing to say about or is that a fault of the review?
Arjan, winschoten, netherlands
Cant' wait to buy it !
I love Madonna, I'm a true fan through thick and thin and I highly doubt that I won't enjoy this album
Give it to me !!!!
