The composer and trumpeter Bill Dixon wallows in sustained slowness. Dixon, a vast inflatable snail, gave a 2005 London Jazz Festival performance that suggested a hippo giving birth to a tuba. Last year, at the age of 81, he premiered this structured improvisation for 17 musicians, mainly horn players, at the Vision festival in New York. It’s a defiantly lugubrious yet undeniably powerful affair. The ensemble swells pendulously in slow-motion, Godzilla-movie-soundtrack mode. Sometimes, Dixon parps indistinct squeaks. The 24-minute Sinopia sounds like classic 1960s squeaky-door free improvisation, but realised on an epic scale, and will cloud your brain like an expanding marshmallow fog.
