The man, the films, those blondes. Free DVD collection starting this Sunday

Of all the films in all the cinemas in all the world . . . why this? The answer might sound as familiar as sliced bread, but there is nothing remotely prosaic about the magic. Casablanca is the greatest romantic thriller yet painted on screen. No one could accuse Curtiz of minting high art, but does that honestly matter?
Casablanca is shameless entertainment. It’s not, as many would have it, a noble melodrama about a grumpy nightclub owner with a broken heart. It is a terrific comedy of bad Vichy manners with genuine twists of repulsion and fear. The Second World War is still in its ghastly pomp, and loyalties are bought and sold in this Moroccan stew like black market favours.
Humphrey Bogart’s Rick Blaine is a bastard with a broken heart. How broken becomes apparent when the girl who broke his heart in Paris (Ingrid Bergman) walks through the door with her new husband, Resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid). Rick has the only two plane tickets out of Casablanca — a pair of precious transit papers. According to the screenwriter, Howard Koch, no one had a clue whose names would be on the boarding passes until the very end of the chaotic shoot. With no certainty about the ending, the actors went into scalding scenes with their hearts on their sleeves. The emotional shorthand between the two leads resonates more with every viewing. The dry-eyed lack of sentiment is, of course, exactly what you would expect from cinema’s most hard-boiled romantic. James Christopher

No not the best movie, nostalgia and a haunting melody got this one past the Winning Post.
Predictable and wooden in many ways...
But what is the most important thing when you are selling anything, even movies...TIMING and the time was right and the story fitted the time.
Alan Oliver, Luzon, Philippines
Is "gone with the wind" not on this list? Seriously?
Fi, LA, USA
There are any number of people who will read this list and sigh when they see Casablanca as # 1.Dr.Strangelove is a better film.
But my question is this, what is the attraction people have for Casablanca? The movie is ok,but my God #1.
frank, wilmington, usa
All in no order -
Princess Bride
Twelve Monkeys
Last Samurai
Monsieur Hulot's Holiday
Shawshank Redemption
Forrest Gump
Dances With Wolves
Forbidden Planet
Time Bandits
Oh Brother Where Art Thou
Lord of The Rings
Modern Times
Classics, every last one, but all absent.
Jim, Glasgow,
It's a ranking for incult teenagers!
Where are Fellini, Visconti, Antonioni, Bergman, Eisenstein, Kurosawa, Godard, Leone, lang ?
you prefer casablanca and ET ?
Your list is ridiculous!
vinny, paris, france
and for me the best film ever made is Once Upon a Time in America!
vinny, paris, france
if you would dump all of the 1990's garbage from this list you would have room for some really great over looked films
william duren, pascagoula, usa
The real top 10:
1. The Godfather
2. Seven Samurai
3. Citizen Kane
4. The Godfather: Part II
5. 2001: A Space Odyssey
6. Raging Bull
7. Schindler's List
8. Lawrence of Arabia
9. Sunset Blvd.
10. Psycho
adam, omaha, usa
What happened to Fellini? Bergman? Truffaut? Kurosawa? Goddard? Why are none of their films listed? This is one of the worst Top 100 films lists I have ever seen. Some great movies in it though.
That being said, THERE IS NO GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME. It's a matter of personal tastes and opinion.
Miles, Los Angeles, USA
Casablanca is a worthy choice. And I agree with choices like It's a Wonderful Life, Citizen Kane, A Matter of Life & Death, and The Manchurain Candidate as well as personal favourites of mine like My Darling Clementine, Bringing Up Baby, Les Diabolique, Portrait of Jennie and Singing in The Rain
Jim Coats, Renfrew, Scotland
Tedious, overrated, dull, dull, dull film. Can you honstly say that it is a more entertaining film than say Gladiator which didn't even make the list? That it is better scripted than Godfather? Better acted than One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest? No, No and No. Dreadful film, dreadful decision
Richard, Steyning, UK
Dr. Strangelove (not even on the list) should be in the Top 10, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre should be somewhere. Casablanca is tedious and overrated, but its sentimental veneer makes it inevitable for the Top 10. Though #1? Hardly.
Sean, Bangor, USA
Casablanca? Number one? I want to weep!! Its good but not the best movie ever, not by a country mile.
Andrew Harrison, Holmfirth, UK
In terms of classic films, I'm surprised 'It's a Wonderful Life' wasn't in this list. That too is a timeless classic.
Oliver, Cambridge, United Kingdom
Casablanca is a great movie. But there's no excuse for putting it at #1 and leaving Citizen Kane, La Règle du jeu, Ladri di biciclette, Sunrise, Greed, The Battleship Potemkin, The Gold Rush, The Passion of Joan of Arc, and Intolerance clean off the list.
Sam Bailey, Florida,
By the way, I'm surprised that the grossly overrated Forrest Gump wasn't put on the list.
Sam Bailey, Florida,
The Apartment is my Casablanca. A Billie Wilder classic showing us that the underdog can still get the girl. Jack Lemon at his best and a lovely feel good movie too.
Martin Peet, Anglesey, Wales
What about "the Lady Vanishes"?
Scott, London,
I must be dreaming. I could swear that I just took the time to read a list of the 100 top movies of all time printed by the Time of London (London, ENGLAND) and not one Chaplin film was on it. That must be it - must be dreaming. Then again, I don't typically blog in my sleep, so it may have happened
Travis, Chicago, IL, US
Restored to its rightful place, Casablanca is pure movie magic: perfect cast, gorgeous photography (palm frond shadows on walls, searchlights in the sky), and the wittiest dialogue ever in any movie.
Annette McMullen, Vincennes, IN, USA
Atrocious, just atrocious.
This is a marvelously insightful study in the nature of the middle mind, however.
Yan, Gary, USA
I agree with Casablanca #1. I have watched it scores of times as a projectionist and it just gets better and better.
However you missed several greats; Kind Hearts & Coronets, anything by Luis Bunel (?!), Lawrence of Arabia. M. "the Leopard" too, perhaps, tis my favourite at least.
george byrne, Oxford, Oxford
Best five films-not in any order
1 On the beach
2 Casino
3Godfather ll
4 Aliens
5 Dr zhivago
also stalingrad, goodfellas, way out west, the beach and wallstreet
paula, darlington, england
How about The Americanization of Emily? One of my favorites
Carol Chappell, Buford, US
field of dreams, hands down
jb, Beaumont,
What a lot of boring films in that list. In fact, some of them have recently been featured in a MSN article on "classics" that really haven't stood the test of time.
I am proud of my top 5 favourite movies - City of God, American History X, Gladiator, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and Zoolander!
Jacquie Hoskins, Cardiff,
Lists as a rule , provoke anger , debate and contentious criticism .
Surely thats the point , a bit of fun , 5 minutes out of your day to give kudos to pieces of celluloid that have etched their magic forever into our collective heads , its great we all feel obliged to stand and shout .
steve, liverpool,
Oh for what its worth my top ten in no particular order are
Se7en , Jaws, The Limey One False move , Manhunter , Millers Crossing, Rear Window, Superman , The Vanishing ( 1988) and John Carpenters Assault on precinct 13 .
steve, liverpool,
asking why titanic is not on a list of the best films ever made is like asking why macdonalds doesn't have a michelin star. Get a grip.
there will always be changes people would make to top 10/100 lists, but for the record I'd select 'up in smoke' by cheech and chong, and 'les valseuses' by Blier
Cam, dubai,
I can't be bothered going back through the list. Did I miss The Deer Hunter?
Sean, Corfu, Greece
my top3
The Godfather
Titanic
Saving Private Ryan
oa, London, uk
"Why was Titanic omitted from this list?"
Because it was horrible?
I'm probably the only person in the world who doesn't like Casablanca. Ah, Niels-Erik agrees.
M.R., Stockport,
ı think Titanic is the top one.ı can not understand why is omitted this film.
sakir , antalya, Turkey
It baffles me that a top 100 list has been compiled with the following films ommitted- Titanic, Star Wars, Shawshank, One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest and Citizen Kane.
My top 5 would be-
5- Apocalypse Now
4- One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
3- Godfather 2
2- Casablanca
1- Citizen Kane
Jad Hirani, London, UK
Why was Titanic omitted from this list?
Courtnee, Kingston, Jamaica
Bit of a wimp part for Ingrid Bergman. "You will be careful Rick." "You will be careful Victor."
BTW, regarding "La Marseilles/Deutschland, Uber Alles" sing-off: In fact the Germans are singing ""Watch on the Rhine!" or "Die Wacht am Rhein!"
Not even a military song. Another myth busted.
Andrew Milner, Karuizawa, Japan
This was a pretty impressive list, but there were some omissions which is understandable.
Some of the films absent were :-
The Innocents
King Of New York
Memento
Sullivan's Travels
Hellazapoppin'
Kiss Me Deadly
Downfall
Ring
The Manchurian Candidate
Still, it was great fun.
Rob J, Herts, United Kingdom
I most strongly disagree with the choice of "Casablanca" to top the list - mainly because I think that Ingrid Bergman is a terribly overrated actress. And the script is silly beyond belief.
Niels-Erik Larsen, 2000 Frederiksberg, Denmark
I'd have put Finding Nemo and A Matter of Life and Death in there somewhere, otherwise a good list.
Emma, Cambridge, UK
Casablanca is a timeless film. They just don't make them like this anymore.
People say why aren't there foreign language films in the top twenty, maybe because reading subtitles takes some of the effect of the films away? English paper - we cant speak languages - QED
Steve Caskey, Belfast, UK
I agree with "No Country", how about "Private Ryan", "Citizen Kane", "Magnolia & Boogie Nights", and "Almost Famous"
Tim, Cheyenne, WY, USA
No room for Heat? The Usual Suspects or Shawshank! I'd say No Country is better than Fargo too.
Craig , birmingham,
The idea that there will be blood is better then Der Untergang is folly. No the performance wasn't better either. It seems a very very English/American list. I was very surprised to see no Aldomovar for example. The brothers Dardenne need to be mentioned. Cassablanca ... Give you that
Lau, The Hague,
Not a bad list, but I'm somewhat surprised to find the exclusion of classics such as 'The Shawshank Redemption' among others from your list
Adrian Lonergan, Newry,
A list that will no doubt provoke a few discussions. How The Usual Suspects missed out is beyond me. I do not know anyone who has watched this film and not been stunned by the twist at the end. Goodfellas in the 20's is also a shock. Shindlers list? Casino?
Tony, Sydney, Australia
its cool that some one made a list that is very different from the AFI top 100, but this list is terrible through and through.
"The Searchers" as Overrated???
"There will be Blood" at 2?
"ET" on the list at all?
"eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" in the top ten?
just....wow thats just wrong
Johnny, PTZ, US
While I would not disparage the majority of the films on this list, I am disappointed at the trend of declaring movies 'instant' classics (like #2 here). Also, a lot of good movies didn't make the list - like Saving Private Ryan, Glory, Lawrence of Arabia, etc. - which I had expected given the tone.
CA Jencks, San Diego, CA, USA
Nonetheless, you can't deny the power of the "La Marseilles/Deutchland, Uber Alles sing-off. It always chokes me up, and I'm neither French nor German.
Jeri, Terre Haute, USA
A big sell on reading this article was the promise that the list wasn't "just rearranging the furniture." Then I come to find the Macguffin was Casablanca....
Jason, Matsudo, japan
Sorry, is there not a single foreign language film in the top 20? What a dismally parochial and partisan list.
Daniel, London,
Not a bad list. Thanks for rating E.T. so highly. It's the one Spielberg that always gets forgotten behind his more serious pieces. It's my favourite Spielberg and John Williams best score as far as I'm concerned. Overall the list could have done with a bit more animation. How about The Iron Giant?
David, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Peter Wasilenko is right, Victor isn't Ilsa's new husband, he has been Ilsa's husband even in Paris.
I don't think I agree with the rest of the list. I like how they put Chinatown at #4 though, such a brilliant movie.
Joey, Chicago,
Thank you, Geena.
Peter, Geneva, Switzerland
You write that Humphry Bogart while nursing a broken heart meets up again with Ingrid berman marching through his cafe door with her NEW husband Paul Henreid. He was not new. They were always married as she revealed to him during a brief tryst in his apartment explaining why she abruptly left him
Peter Wasilenko, Yonkers, New York, U.S.A
It's always baffled me how this film attracts such acclaim. It's a wooden film, with wooden actors and a wooden sets (the wooden model airplane landing alwas makes me giggle). Number one top film? Hardly. Number one awful B movie more like.
Geena Marelli, Leicester,
