Ten years ago Antony Gormley’s sculpture The Angel of the North began its brooding presence over decayed industrial landscape near Gateshead. Visited by thousands, and seen by millions, it has transformed popular taste and made its creator the most admired British sculptor since Henry Moore. In that same year, Gormley produced his “Insider” series, versions of what he called “a core rather than a skeleton” of the human body. Insider Pointing North, 1998, is to be sold next month in aid of a landmark which stands as dominant over Camden, North London, as The Angel of the North stands over the A1. The Roundhouse is a domed Victorian masterpiece of railway architecture, home to iconic concerts of the post-war era. Since 2006 it has been open as a performance space and studios where young people can gain creative skills alongside some of the top artists of the day. Antony Gormley’s contribution – to the area where he grew up – will be auctioned at a Roundhouse fundraising Gala (info@roundhouse.org.uk) on June 12.
