Capturing the soundwaves created by wobbling jellies and transforming them into a bizarre broadcast with which to regale your guests is not traditionally a top priority when organising a dinner. But they do things differently at the Architectural Jelly Banquet.
Leading architects were invited to design gelatinous models of famous buildings. The ten shortlisted entries, by firms such as Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners, Will Alsop, Grimshaw and Foster and Partners, include a jelly in the shape of the once-wobbly Millennium Bridge, the Eden Project, and another depicting St Paul’s Cathedral.
The results - which will be judged on “innovation, aesthetics and ‘wobble factor’ ” - will be announced at the event tomorrow night at University College London (UCL) as part of the London Festival of Architecture.
Scientists have also recorded sounds made by wobbling jellies into a bizarre soundtrack. The recordings were made by Douglas Murphy, a sound artist. A number of jellies were wobbled and their oscillations measured and turned into sound waves. Mr Murphy said: “It is refreshing to explore the sonority of a much neglected physical property: the wobble factor. Jelly entices us into a strange but compelling world of organic sounds. The sonic wobble is captured in two ways: by carefully recording the results of gentle coaxing and by expressing the wobble frequency as physically powerful bass tones.”
Jonathan Ashmore, of the UCL Ear Institute, said: “Ear experts have been studying jelly for decades, for collagen, one of the ingredients of jelly, makes up the critical components of the inner ear. The way that collagen wobbles on a very small scale is what allows us to hear different notes.”
Whether those wobbles will make for a good tune remains to be seen.
