Currently studying for an MA in Fine Art Practice and Theory at the Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, Dorset artist Bryan Lavelle lists among his influences the work of Dan Flavin and Anish Kapoor. Tellingly, these abstract artists both draw attention to the nature of substance and spatiality in their use of materials. “As a non-representational painter, my work investigates the properties of my chosen materials and the process of painting itself. The work makes no external references and has no meaning or narrative waiting to be uncovered. I am not concerned with trying to represent anything within the real world, instead I wish to allow the materials I use and the processes I employ to represent themselves for themselves - it’s painting for painting’s sake.”
