Ken Livingstone will be handed a tax-free payout of £30,000 should he fail in
his bid to be reelected as Mayor of London, under measures buried within the
Budget literature.
Budget Note 61, which is hidden on page 149 of the new measures, allows for
payouts to members of the Greater London Assembly to incorporate a tax-free
chunk. Should Mr Livingstone lose the election he will be entitled to 50 per
cent of his £137,579 salary under a new “resettlement grant scheme” approved
by GLA members three weeks ago. Mr Livingstone’s opponents accused Mr
Darling of ensuring that Mr Livingstone had a “soft landing”.
Brian Paddick, the Liberal Democrat candidate, said: “It’s nice to see Labour
looking after its own, giving the outgoing mayor nondom status.”
The Treasury insisted, however, that the measures were a tidying-up exercise.
A spokesman said: “Similar measures apply to people in any job. This is just
bringing the GLA and the Mayor of London into line with what is common
practice for other people.”

Livingstone is just as bad as our MP's ! All of them are on a scam which they have for years covered up neatly, using parliamentary secrecy rules, to keep it from their masters. But lads, it is all coming to an end and those new Politicians who recognise they cannot con the public any more with their rules for us and rules for them, they will be the Successful Politicians of the future. Cronyism and deceptive rules which benefit MP's is going to come to an end and the quicker they all realise we, the public, will not tolerate your hipocrasy any more, the more successful they will be. The old scammers will no longer get away with it.

£30,000 would be cheep to get rid of Livingstone.
CJW, Shawbury,
The truth is that not only will Ken get a payout, but so too will those Assembly Members who are stepping down or are not re-elected. Not bad work if you can get it, is it? How much will that come to? I wonder what a pensioner could do with a lump sum like that?
Margaret, Sidcup, Kent
Give him a couple of million to go now!
Sedgwick Morrison, London, UK
The point is Ken will win again. Why? Because there are so many EU citizens and ethnic minorities living in London who will vote Labour to keep Boris out. EU citizens living here do not like the Eurosceptic Tories, so will vote Labour to keep them out.
francis, Sunderland,
Frankly, money well spent to see the back of him. And if anyone is passing the hat around for Darling's leaving present, put me down for a fiver (or a tenner if it's Brown's).
Drew, London,
Lovely to see Labour looking after their own. I suppose we should be grateful that Livingstone was not given a much greater sum.
John Szepietowski, Weybridge, UK
Its amazing how those in power are allowed to line their own pockets at the expense of the taxpayer. In this case though, I would be willing to donate a few pounds to see Red ken go.
Hamad Lone, London, England
i don't care, can we just get him out please, £30k to see him go? money well spent, and a fraction of the waste of money if he was to stay in office
tim, london, england
He will obviously not 'earn' anything, as he will have no job. He will be 'given' (tax free, no doubt) some more taxpayers money, for exactly nothing.
David Leslie, Perth, Scotland
If I'm fired I dont get a payout of 50% of my salary what common practice for what other people can they possibly mean?
TS, London,
Maybe it's because I live on the other side of the world, or maybe things are clearer from afar, but an elected official being compensated if he loses office? This is political corruption.
