As the promoter of the infamous Ibizan club night, Manumission, Andy McKay could be credited (or held responsible, depending on how you look at it) for establishing the Spanish island as the No 1 destination for young people looking to make their wildest hedonistic fantasies become reality. So when McKay announced that he would open the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in the summer, you knew straight away that it is highly unlikely that Saga will be making a block booking at the huge complex in the Ibizan resort of San Antonio any time soon.
McKay started his career in the entertainment business in 1993, promoting the Manumission club night with his brother, Mike, in the rather less glamorous surroundings of Manchester. In 1994 they moved the night to the White Isle and have remained there ever since. "When we got out to Ibiza we couldn't believe the difference in both what the clubs looked like and the attitude," he says. "We started off in a room in Ku [a huge 10,000 capacity nightclub that has since been renamed Privelege] and it just grew from there."
The 1990's were a good time for dance music and Manumission quickly established itself as the biggest club night (in the biggest club) in the world. In 2005 however, McKay and his wife, Dawn, decided to branch out and promoted a series of rock events around the island called Ibiza Rocks. To most people in the music industry's disbelief they proved to be a success and have been a highlight of Ibiza's summer season ever since. McKay says: “In this business there’s a huge difference in doing something two minutes before something breaks rather than two minutes after. We did it with dance music in the 1990s and did the same with rock music in 2005. I believe that we are doing the same this year with the Ibiza Rocks Hotel.”
The hotel certainly is a new concept for the island. It offers ordinary people a unique opportunity to live a rock'n'roll lifestyle with 24-hour bars, live music and the chance to see their favourite bands perform both at the hotel as well as in various venues across Ibiza. The hotel opens its doors on May 31 with British band The Enemy kicking off proceedings. The cost of the accommodation varies from small rooms at bargain prices to rooftop penthouses. There will also be a shopping arcade which will include various fashion outlets, including the Ibiza Rocks fashion brand.
“As well as the bigger acts that we've got coming over for Ibiza Rocks," McKay says. "We are planning to have smaller resident bands staying at the hotel. I'd love to see bands coming over to Ibiza and trying to get gigs and get themselves noticed in the same way DJ's did in the 1990's. It’s going to be a very rock’n’roll summer.”
