John Lewis emerged today as one of the biggest winners from the Easter weekend after reporting a huge sales jump at its department stores.
Sales on Good Friday were up by 29 per cent on the same Bank Holiday a year ago, and by 33 per cent on Easter Monday.
Sales at Waitrose, the John Lewis supermarket chain, rose by 27.6 per cent during last week as a whole.
The figures follow reports that the desperate weather led to dire trading across the high street.
The Centre for Economics and Business Research fears that sales dropped by 14 per cent over Easter weekend against the same period last year while visitors to DIY shops are thought to have plunged by 13 per cent.
When asked about Easter trading yesterday, Ian Cheshire, the chief executive of the B&Q owner Kingfisher, said: “Well, it snowed.”
Nat Wakeley, John Lewis regional director of selling operations, said that the biggest sales growth came in electrical and home technology and men’s brands.
He said: “We enjoyed terrific trading over the Bank Holiday weekend. Taking the key seasonal days together, every single branch reported an increase. It was a cracking week.”
John Lewis has consistently been one the high street’s star performers. However, last month reported one of its biggest sales falls for a year, triggering fresh nerves about the health of the retail sector.
A number of mid-market players, such as Dolcis, have collapsed into administration since Christmas and another wave has been expected given the pressure of meeting this month’s quarterly rent cheque.
Morgan, the French-owned fashion chain, announced this week that it was closing all its UK stores.

Propped up by MP's expenses/allowances for second homes no doubt ...
Benzo, Nr Chelmsford,
John Lewis select their staff carefully or train them extremely well, or both. They're head and shoulders above other stores in terms of manners and quality of service.
M&S staff are usually quite helpful too - if you can find one. Cost-cutting is one thing, but it can be taken too far, and stores have to stock what people want to buy. John Lewis offer quality and value, and you rarely have to search for long without being offered assistance. Their philosophy obviously pays off.

But they're not perfect and can be arrogant. They recently withdrew a television offer that was dated " ends 30 March" and would not reinstate it. I bought the tv elsewhere. Complacency is a poor business attitude. When the bad times come, as they surely will.............................

possibly because all our MP's get to spend £22K a year might explain their results.

'Never knowingly undersold' three cheers for John Lewis hurrah hurrah hurr............
john, milton keynes,
I think that their formula for success is that they employ failed applicants from The Apprentice show.
Staff are extremely polite, well dressed, and give "human responses" to customer requests.
Andy Bush, Warwick,
I now live temporarily in the US. I visited John Lewis in Brent Cross during the Easter holidays. I was really impressed with the service I received. I couldn't find my size and the assistant checked other stores and offered to have it sent to Brent Cross or posted to me. I forgot how good they were at customer service. I miss JL!

John Lewis does well because it has such well mannered and capable staff. Like shop assistants used to be.
How interesting that Morgan is shutting. The last time I went into Morgan (why would I go back?) it was staffed by very young girls who chewed gum with their mouth open at the counter.
Most people over the age of 25 like manners. Hooray for John Lewis.
