Silverjet, the business-class airline, collapsed into administration yesterday hours after grounding all its jets.
The company said that there was little prospect of shareholders getting any value out of the business, which began operating only last year.
Mark Fry, an administrator with Begbies Traynor, which was appointed as lead administrator, said there had been a number of early approaches from private equity, industry and wealthy individuals, and believes the business model could work despite City concerns.
Mr Fry said that the business was carrying at least £10 million in debt from private investment and its three aircraft were leased, so the value to buyers would come from goodwill in the business, the routes it operated and its airline licence.
The decision to ground all flights came after Silverjet failed to secure a $5 million (£2.5 million) loan from a Gulf investor. Thousands of passengers have been left stranded or needing to change travel plans by the operator, which flies from Luton to Dubai and New York. The Civil Aviation Authority estimated that 7,000 UK and 2,500 nonUK customers have been affected and they are not covered by the air travel industry’s insurance scheme.
Silverjet has told passengers to contact their credit card companies or travel agents to try to recover their money.
The airline has been battling for survival for the past week after it said it needed an immediate cash injection to keep flying. Its AIM-listed shares were suspended last Friday. Yesterday it said it was continuing to talk to investors that might support the venture.
But Justin Bates, analyst at Daniels Stewart, said it was unlikely that Silverjet’s shares would be relisted. He said that the difficulties the broker saw in the business model have been exacerbated by “the meteoric rise in the oil price”. Mr Bates said: “We now estimate that it costs more than £44,000 in fuel for a round trip to New York on a Silverjet B767, up from £28,600 at the time of the November 2007 fundraising.”
Silverjet substantially undercut the price of other airlines’ business class fares but struggled with occupancy levels along with soaring fuel costs.

Again in response to the so called gentleman from Harrogate - Eric, I worked for Silverjet and they were a fantastic company . And as for you saying good riddance a lot of people are suffering as a result of them going down, not least the cabin crew who havent been paid - so thanks for your comment

Can the entire world economy stop for 3 days? I think that would cause widespread panic and I doubt that it would bring down the price of oil. In the long-term demand is rising and production is shrinking, so it is logical for the price to go up.

In 1991 one of the most successful investors in the world, Warren Buffett, observed that the world airline industry has not made a net profit for investors in over a century of manned flight.
Sad really, because they have revolutionised travel.
John, London, UK
In response to the gentleman from Harrogate, I believe that a majority of airlines lease their planes, as it is the most tax efficient method of ownership. Ventures like Silverjet are formed by people who are prepared to take a chance in life - We all need entrepreneurs who aren't afraid to fail.

I had some silverjet shares ,but even when the writing was on the wall ,I truly thought siljverjet would survive , I just thought there would be enough passengers out there to keep it going but sadly I think I've lost my investment probably along with lots of other punters .The curse of black gold

Something that calls itself an 'airline' but has only three planes, owns none of them, flies pampered people, who could well go on ordinary flights but feel too superior to do so, to only two destinations.A silly venture which only parted fools from their money.Good riddance. Let's see some more go.

Simple question. If everyone in the world for say 3 days decided to top driving cars, flying in planes etc etc, would it not send a signal out to the oil traders that demand controls supply, not the other way round. Collectively we can get the oil price down, there is no point in moaning about it !
Andy Brown, Manchester, England
We travelled on Silverjet last Tueday (27th May) had a great flight, I'm pleased that my husband , daughter and Son in Law and myself were able to experience a wonderful relaxed flight to New York. Sadley many people will loose their jobs and I feel greatly for them.
Sandy Scrivener, Wickford, Essex
This is the third airline I have booked in a row to go bust, EU Jet went bust, Maxjet and now Silverjet, I will not trust a small or new airline again.
