I am a Christian. Though I am not a fundamentalist, I sincerely believe that anyone who fails to repent and trust in Jesus Christ will go to Hell. Is it ethical to respect the personal beliefs of others and basically let them go to Hell? Or should I warn them and risk upsetting them, not to mention the trouble I might cause for myself? In a live-and-let-live age, many would say that it’s no more your business to stop people from going to Hell, if that’s what they want to do, than it is to stop them going to Wyoming, or to a cinema to watch The Sound of Music for the 197th time or to visit a plastic surgeon clutching a photo of Ernest Borgnine and pleading, “Doc, I want you to make me look like THIS !”; just as it’s nobody else’s business to bully you with their belief that there is no Hell.
In any case, perhaps you should be sceptical of people19 who swear that they are atheists and don’t believe in an afterlife. They may secretly be the most fervent believers of all: it may just be that they like to drive a hard bargain, and that they’re trying to see how much extra they can squeeze out of God in return for finally being won around to his whole Hell concept.
Moreover, civility demands that we indulge other people’s religious beliefs every bit as tolerantly as we indulge their belief that they know how to crack the Middle East crisis, or that their hair actually looks good combed that way.
Anyway, some people actively want to go to Hell. Machiavelli reckoned that the company would be much better there — “popes, kings, and princes, while in Heaven there are only beggars, monks, hermits and apostles”. And you have to admit this: when you watch people going to Hell, it often looks like they’re having a pretty good time making their way there, doesn’t it? JOE JOSEPH

I believe wholeheartedly, Mr Joseph that you believe you are a true Christian, especially after having also read the slating review you gave in a previous article on Richard Rudgley's Pagans (July 2004)
There is no hell, only the Christian concept, approved by the fairy story that is the bible
Marie, Yorkshire,
I can't imagine ever sending my children to hell, if I had that power, no matter what they did or believed, so the concept of a loving God condemning his own creations to eternal damnation has always seemed inherently ludicrous. If someone truly believes in the concept however, it would seem their bounden duty to try and convert everyone to their belief. I would suggest the writer starts by preaching his doctrine outside a mosque in Saudia Arabia.
Mike, Lydney, UK
As a Christian evangelist I can see where Mr Joseph is coming from. If I saw a blind person walking towards a hole in the pavement and did nothing to warn him I would be failing in my duty to my fellow man. In the same way we, as Christians, must warn people concerning their eternal destiny. Daniel claims to be an atheist and "there's no budging us!" However, Atheists have been converted, so there is hope for him yet !
Bob Hutton, Broadstairs, Kent., England
Irrespective of my beliefs that the concept of an all loving God and hell are inherently antagonistic, you should understand that my conviction that there is no God is just as strong as your conviction that there is. I, as other atheists have, have come to this conclusion through reason and theres no budging us!
Daniel, Boston,
What a resfreshing open article, its good to be frank.

If you wish to impose your myths and fantasies on other adults - so be it.
However , expect to be grilled and ridiculed and to have your standing as an intelligent , and possibly respected , member of society severely questioned.
Those who choose to expose personal beliefs in public , or indeed expect others to respect them or abide by them , must also accept the consequences.
Incidentally ,do you believe in Father Christmas as well?
