People literally spit on me because I am ginger. I have photographed 300 redheads for my book and only one of them had had no negative experiences. A ginger-haired consultant told me people lean out of car windows to comment on his hair.
I was on the Tube last year, pregnant, and a lager lout started shouting: “Oi, oi, ginger, ginger! Do your collars match your cuffs?” Nobody came to help.
People have this obsession with whether the hair on your head matches your body hair. When I was at boarding school, a group of boys tried to pin me down on a ping-pong table to find out for themselves.
I was the only redhead in my year and they did everything they could to make me cry. We had a beautiful dining hall, like the one in the Harry Potter books, and when I walked in someone would shout “ginger” and they would all lie down on the floor to avoid catching “ginger disease”. It was quite a sight, seeing 700 people react like that.
But I would not have any other hair colour. We redheads are stronger biologically, we have thicker hair and we can withstand more pain than anyone else. Having just had a baby, I can verify that this is true: it was not that bad.
The abuse is a very British thing. I lived in America for a while, and as soon as I got there I was asked out left, right and centre. Americans see it as fiery and attractive. I married an American and we have just had a son. The only disappointment is that he is not a redhead.

Until recently I was married to a redhead. I adored her hair, she was quite indifferent to it. But she got singled out at school a) for being a copper-redhead and b) for being tall, and this was in Scotland! Does not compute!

The last paragraph of this article must be true. I've always lived in the U.S. and I have never encountered the slightest bit of abuse or unpleasantness for my red hair. Nothing but compliments.

I was born in Birmingham, England and was tromatised by the relentless harrasment I got for having red hair. I didn't have many friends and never got a girlfriend. I moved to the US aged 24. The women went crazy! I never heard the name GINGER called at me again. It was always red. That's funny.

I am a redhead and when i was born my hair was bright Orange, its sense gone a little more brown but its still red and definetly red in the light. All through school i was picked on, not necessarily bullied but picked on. The most common comment i received was "firecrotch". Back when it was said to me i thought it was a bad thing and i didn't know how to respond. I also recall in preschool being pinned down under a child's swimming pool because of my red hair, that was scary! However in high school at career fairs, the army recruiters always said " We need more redheads in the army! Join up!" , funny really. I love red hair! and my future wife, as a requirement must also have red hair :)
Max, Savannah, Georgia
Im a redhead and have always been very popular with men and even women on occations, and have never suffered at the hands of ridicule or bullies...i have my whole life watched at school/workplaces etc as other redheads were bullied to death and could never undertand why they never turned on me !!!!i suppose you are now thinking my hair is not really that red but i can assure you it most certainly is !
Saying all that i have secretly lived in fear most of my life and just the mear thought of someone directing the "collars and cuffs" question at me makes me blush...for this reason i wish i had another hair colour cos in a way it has somewhat squashed my outgoing personality incase i stir up such a question !
I have never understood why people hold such a hatred for red hair that they can be so cruel, i think its beautiful in men and women alike.
Id love a responce from a genuine ginger hater if only to make some sence out of the venom i have witnessed x
Clarice, Blackpool, England
I guess some in America didn't get teased, but I, being American, had reddish auburn hair and was constantly bullied by the girls...but the boys loved it. Maybe explaining why I got picked on by the girls. At one point I tried to color my hair brown, but it went back to red. I just learned to love it.
I lived in England for 6 yrs. and not one british guy asked me out...could my hair have been the problem as American men loved the color of it and I never lacked for dates there? Never thought of it or had never heard of the prejudice towards it while living in England.
I do know others in America with the brighter Oranger hair color that were also harrassed over it. It's ridiculous. I think the UK's Prince Harry has some of the most gorgeous hair color. Red hair really brings out the features on your face such as eyes. It's a shame that some people seem to find something to pick on others for. That's a sad element in some.
brenda, Haysville, USA
I am Chinese, and I've always found redheads to be the most attractive of European features. Who wants diluted races like browns and greys?
kt, london,
I've never understood this anti ginger thing. I think red hair is gorgeous.
Filey, Scarborough, England
I had never heard of predjudice against "redheads" as we Americans call it. People always LOVE my red hair and are a bit sad that neither of my children have my color hair. I thought the article was a joke at first.
I cannot believe the poor family who is forced to keep moving and changing schools because of the disgusting way they are treated because of heir hair color.
Prejudice in any form should NOT be tolerated!
