And they say we Americans don't understand irony. Humour always offends someone This is the reason Rowan Atkinson was marching a few days ago and why we don't need criminal sanctions for "inciting religious hatred". Dave Crooks, Winchester, England
I can't imagine why there'd be an uproar over this. Why is this a problem and a school nativity featuring children murdering the story from the Bible isn't? Steve Clark, Billericay, England
Although a practising Christian I'm not particularly offended, although I think someone should have noticed the anachronism of Joseph (David Beckham) wearing a couple of crucifixes. Name and address withheld
Why is it that no sensible, mature adult would dream of offending an Islamic or Jewish festivity, yet when it comes to a Christian festival there appears to be no bounds as to what is both offensive and in very poor taste? Name and address withheld
The navitity scene is offensive because the very essence of Christmas has been tarnished by materialistic celebrities such as the Beckhams. This is not what Christmas/Jesus is about. Jesus identified with the poor and needy and social outcasts, and he shunned all material wealth. The nativity scene is in poor taste but there are no surprised here - the individuals taking part in the "nativity scene" have simply lived up to our expectations, of being materialistic, egoistic, self-centered and godless. Grace Hamilton, London
Is the Beckham nativity blasphemus? Who cares? I find it hard to understand how anyone can worship a "supreme being" that doesn,t exist. Instead of trying to convert the level-headed amongst us, they could be out there doing some real good. When so-called Christians find out im an atheist, they immediately assume I worship the devil and sacrifice virgins every Sunday! Wouldn't the world be a lovely place without religion? Aaron Quigley, Shanklin
I am an American Catholic. I consider myself to be open minded and indeed liberal in my religious and political inclinations. However, I feel that this nativity is an act of commercial exploitation of the central theme of Christmas- Christ's birth. Of course, Christmas has become overtly commercial over the years, but the ritual and symbolism of the Church have been kept reasonably insulated from this secular side of the holiday. I believe with this nativity, a line has been crossed that should not have been. Stephen Schein, Augusta, Georgia
It's a storm in a tea-cup. As a christian youthworker in the Salvation Army I think this is actually a fantastic opportunity to relate the Christmas story in a way that may engage young people and capture some imaginations while aslo taking it in the light-hearted sense in which it appears to be intended. What I find offensive as a christian are the thousands of children who will die of hunger due to poverty this Christmas and I prefer to make that the outworking of my faith. Alastair Jones, Manchester
David would doubtless put his eye out if allowed near any carpentry materials. Victoria is no virgin. Blair, Bush and the Duck of Edinburgh as wise men? Come on... Successful irony needs at least a veneer of subtlety. This "art" is just too cruel to it's modern participants to be relevant to anyone who sees the nativity as an important symbol. Joe Khouri, Thame
The Beckham nativity is every bit as blasphemous as the painting of Eric Cantona as "The Risen Christ" was a few years ago. But I am so disillusioned that nothing surprises me any more. Josephine Gill, Colchester
Just another publicity stunt from yet another company eager to cater for the lowest common denominator (chavs and tourists). Katie Collins, London
Hasn't anyone noticed? The celebrities gaze lovingly at their mesmerized audience, us, the source of their temporal power, while the baby Jesus goes unnoticed - not even the Beckhams cast as Mary and Joseph bother to look down at their own child. What an insightful and chilling comment on the self-absorbtion of modern culture! I may have to pay Madame Tussaud's a visit the next time I'm in London. It appears there may be more to the place than I had always thought. Peter Adams, Wisconsin
I don't think it is blasphemous but it is in poor taste. I am not surprised at this development given that it is well in trend with the unfortunate culture of idolisation of so-called "celebrities". A one-off attraction it should be as the symbolism of the nativity is something worth preserving although one quite can’t ignore and in fact appreciate the juxtaposition of the cast of this nativity and the original. Joshua Chan, London
Yes, but isn't everything else to do with them in bad taste? William Lippett, Darlington
Will someone please, please turn up the heating in Madame Tussaud's? Criag Thompson, London
