Terms and Conditions for proposers and nominees – Nominations for The Times/Sternberg Award

1. Closing date for nominations is 5.00pm October 1, 2008

2. To be eligible to nominate a person you must be a resident of the UK and aged 18 or over, excludes employees of Times Newspapers Limited (“TNL”) and their associated, affiliated or subsidiary companies, and their families, agents, or anyone connected with this competition, including the third party promotional partners.

3. You may only make one nomination. Prior to submitting details of any nominee, you must obtain the consent of the nominee for disclosure of their name, location and contact details (including telephone number) to TNL and advise them of purpose of the submission and that their name, location and details of their nomination may be published in The Times or on Times Online.

4. You must nominate a person who is aged 70 or over at the date of nomination who you believe currently makes an active and significant contribution to society or a particular cause or organisation with whom they are associated. Your nominations should be accompanied by a summary of 500 words or less detailing the nominees’ achievements, current activities and reasons why the individual deserves the recognition of The Times/Sternberg Award.

5. A person may not nominate themselves.

6. Nominations can be made via the website www.thetimes.co.uk/activelife or by letter, including your name, address and telephone number, to: Times Newspapers Limited Public Relations Sternberg Award, 1 Pennington Street, London E98 1TT. Nominations must be received by 5.00pm October 1, 2008.

7. TNL reserves the right to publish nominations (including parts of entries) other than the winning nomination and publication does not necessarily mean the nominated person has won the award.

8. Nominators will retain copyright in their submitted entries, however, by entering, all nominators licence TNL a worldwide royalty-free perpetual licence to edit, publish and use each entry in any and all media (including print and online) for publicity and news purposes

9. There will be one overall winner of the award and two runners-up. The winners will be chosen by a judging panel of Sir Sigmund Sternberg and James Harding, the Editor of The Times and their decision as to the winners will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. Nominees may be required to submit further details of their achievements (including references) as part of the judges’ consideration of their nomination.

10. The winners will be chosen by December 21, 2008 and will be notified by December 22, 2008.

11. There is only one prize which is a cheque for £10,000 which will be awarded to the overall winner. There is no runner up prize.

12. Any breach of these rules by a nominator will void their nominations. Misrepresentative or fraudulent nominations will invalidate that nomination. The Editor’s and judges decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into. TNL reserves the right, with or without cause, to exclude nominations and withhold prizes for violating any of these terms and conditions. TNL reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions. Any amendments will be published on the Website.

13. There is no alternative to the prize stated and the prize is not transferable and no part or parts of the prize may be substituted for other benefits, items or additions.

14. The winner may be required to submit valid identification before receiving their prize.

15. The judges’ decision is final and binding on the entrants. No correspondence will be entered into.

16. TNL will not be liable for technical, hardware, or software failures of any kind or lost or unavailable network connections which may limit or prohibit an eligible entrant's ability to participate in the competition. Other than death or personal injury arising from the acts or omissions of TNL, or their employees, TNL will not be liable for any loss or damage arising out of the winner’s enjoyment of the prize

17. Uses of personal data received by TNL in the course of the promotion are subject to the privacy policy found on the Website. Winners' names may be published on the Website.

18. TNL reserves the right at any time to cancel, modify or supersede the competition (including altering prizes) if, in their sole discretion, a competition is not capable for being conducted as specified. TNL reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal value in the event that circumstances beyond their control make this unavoidable.
