The only thing this study sheds light on is the fact that this arcane method employed by today's scientists is obviously motivated by culture itself. When you start with a question that is not scientific and is clearly motivated by a political and cultural condition, you will certainly not get a scientific answer in the end. The study is just another sad attempt to legitimise a particular social agenda through scientific method. It is truly a step back. Name and address withheld
The author carried out a scientific study and concluded that men are more likely to be represented at the higher end of the IQ spectrum. What bothers me is that he kept apologising for this in the article, saying that he was not comfortable with the conclusion. Would he be apologising so profusely had the research shown women to be superior? Surely not! Truth must take precedence over political correctness - at least in science, if nowhere else. Feminism has gone too far and is impeding truth and free speech. Peter Lloyd, London
I agree with the findings - men are more intelligent, but women seem to have more common sense and are terrific multitaskers. When you have one sensible woman, men will rely on her to plan, act and follow through. I think the findings are a bit like comparing apples to pears. Name and address withheld
Is brain size proportional to head size? Does this mean that women with big heads are highly intelligent and can multitask better than men (as is supposed to be true)? Should we put our head measurement on our CVs? Stephen Blackwell, Manchester
I am inclined to believe that extreme talent will rise to the top. So far, there has been no female equivalent of Beethoven, Mozart, Shakespeare, Newton, Clerk-Maxwell, Einstein. However, in other activities women have risen to the very top. Consider Katherine the Great, Elizabeth I, Margaret Thatcher, etc, despite huge male resistance. I believe the report is basically flawed because it focuses on the attributes that support the author's preconceptions. If they had addressed different criteria they might have arrived at different conclusions. The problem is that men and women are different and should be measured differently. Peter Robinson, Medina, Ohio
Repeated studies have indeed noted that there is a positive correlation between brain volume and intelligence. Repeated studies have also noted that there is a positive correlation between the amount of education a person receives and his/her brain volume. Inna Tysoe, Sacramento, California
Is it not strange that a film entitled White Men Can't Jump can be screened without any outburst; and yet when the question of differences in intelligence between sexes or races is raised there is a great outburst of emotional, non-scientific and politically correct opinions? Stewart Brash, Perth, Australia
I would like to think that intelligence was a far more rounded quality than the ability to jump through a set of paperwork hoops. Chaz Folkes, Guildford, Surrey
You don't need an in-depth study to establish the most intelligent sex ... merely read the comments above. Jamie Woodward, London
I'm not surprised that men have higher measured IQs than women. We are, by upbringing, more prone to risk-taking and so men are far more prepared to guess when they are not sure. This is also why men outperform women at the highest academic levels. We're not cleverer, we just appear more definite. Marcus Body, London
I strongly disagree with this statement. I am nearly 15 points more intelligent on an IQ test than my wife (between 125 and 130 compared to her 110-115), yet she was an A-grade student, myself a C. She is far more capable than me at grasping the subjects she has studied. I only grasp what I find interesting enough to pursue, and even then it's a stretch. Gerhard Nel, Bristol
If women are more intelligent, they don't seem to do anything with it! There are not good at inventing - can you name one invention of worth that women have invented in the past 100 years? Edward Parker, Auckland, New Zealand
Women must be smarter - I had to throw away my Encyclopedia Britannica because the wife knows everything. Dickie Beesley, London
In response to Barry Heath, Halifax, Nova Scotia, who asked "Where are the female DaVincis or Einsteins?" I would like to inform all you sexist men that I am a female artist, writer and poet who can both draw and paint figurative and surreal pictures with both hands. How many of you men can do that? Mary Myers, Goodmayes, Essex
Something in my white male brain is preventing me from seeing the link between size of brain and IQ test performance ability. Testosterone and IQ test performance ability? Maybe. Linguistic differences interplaying with brain structure and function? Perhaps. Size? Rubbish. Paul Tout, Trieste, Italy
Anyone who has ever taught bright university students will know (whether they admit it or not) that males are more likely to be in the highly gifted category for the majority (though not all) mental abilities. However, I don't believe this is necessarily down to IQ. Males - or the small minority in the top layer of achievement - are markedly more obsessive and driven in their curiosity. This could be hormonal, who knows? This trait can't easily be explained away by socialisation because it only affects a small number of men people in the first place. J. Dunne, London
