OUTSIDER: Gill looks English and sounds English, but despite 50 years of rubbing up against the English, judging by his article, he is still a Scotsman who does not understand one thing about the English — and that is exactly how I like it.

VERY FUNNY: In his two-page diatribe Gill comments “I write humour for a living”. Does he now?

OWN GOAL? Gill wasn’t too controversial (I like to think we English can recognise our faults), until football was mentioned. In citing behaviour at English football matches, Gill is conveniently overlooking the sectarian racism that is part and parcel of the glamour match (Celtic vs Rangers) in Scotland. And if Gill dislikes this country enough to write a book about it, why is he still here?

CROSS BORDERS: Gill’s outburst at the anger of the English filled me with anger. Until I realised that it was just another example of traditional Scottish anger. At which point it simply became hilarious.

FLAGGED UP: When England won the World Cup in 1966 I saw a sea of Union Jacks. When England won the rugby against Australia I saw a sea of St George flags. Thank you for publishing the article. It can only serve to enhance the sense of identity and belief in England.

DRESSING DOWN: It is surprising that so many Scots desert their homeland to live in England. It would be easy to ridicule a country that has a national dress skirt for men, a drink made of malted grain and bog water and where everything is deep-fried. However, that would be as much a rant and as inaccurate as Gill’s view of the country that has suckled him.
