And it came to pass, in the eighth year of the reign of the evil Bush the Younger (The Ignorant), when the whole land from the Arabian desert to the shores of the Great Lakes had been laid barren, that a Child appeared in the wilderness.
The Child was blessed in looks and intellect. Scion of a simple family, offspring of a miraculous union, grandson of a typical white person and an African peasant. And yea, as he grew, the Child walked in the path of righteousness, with only the occasional detour into the odd weed and a little blow.
When he was twelve years old, they found him in the temple in the City of Chicago, arguing the finer points of community organisation with the Prophet Jeremiah and the Elders. And the Elders were astonished at what they heard and said among themselves: “Verily, who is this Child that he opens our hearts and minds to the audacity of hope?”
In the great Battles of Caucus and Primary he smote the conniving Hillary, wife of the deposed King Bill the Priapic and their barbarian hordes of Working Class Whites.
And so it was, in the fullness of time, before the harvest month of the appointed year, the Child ventured forth - for the first time - to bring the light unto all the world.
He travelled fleet of foot and light of camel, with a small retinue that consisted only of his loyal disciples from the tribe of the Media. He ventured first to the land of the Hindu Kush, where the
Taleban had harboured the viper of al-Qaeda in their bosom, raining terror on all the world.
And the Child spake and the tribes of Nato immediately loosed the Caveats that had previously bound them. And in the great battle that ensued the forces of the light were triumphant. For as long as the Child stood with his arms raised aloft, the enemy suffered great blows and the threat of terror was no more.
From there he went forth to Mesopotamia where he was received by the great ruler al-Maliki, and al-Maliki spake unto him and blessed his Sixteen Month Troop Withdrawal Plan even as the imperial warrior Petraeus tried to destroy it.
And lo, in Mesopotamia, a miracle occurred. Even though the Great Surge of Armour that the evil Bush had ordered had been a terrible mistake, a waste of vital military resources and doomed to end in disaster, the Child's very presence suddenly brought forth a great victory for the forces of the light.
And the Persians, who saw all this and were greatly fearful, longed to speak with the Child and saw that the Child was the bringer of peace. At the mention of his name they quickly laid aside their intrigues and beat their uranium swords into civil nuclear energy ploughshares.
From there the Child went up to the city of Jerusalem, and entered through the gate seated on an ass. The crowds of network anchors who had followed him from afar cheered “Hosanna” and waved great palm fronds and strewed them at his feet.
In Jerusalem and in surrounding Palestine, the Child spake to the Hebrews and the Arabs, as the Scripture had foretold. And in an instant, the lion lay down with the lamb, and the Israelites and Ishmaelites ended their long enmity and lived for ever after in peace.
As word spread throughout the land about the Child's wondrous works, peoples from all over flocked to hear him; Hittites and Abbasids; Obamacons and McCainiacs; Cameroonians and Blairites.
And they told of strange and wondrous things that greeted the news of the Child's journey. Around the world, global temperatures began to decline, and the ocean levels fell and the great warming was over.
The Great Prophet Algore of Nobel and Oscar, who many had believed was the anointed one, smiled and told his followers that the Child was the one generations had been waiting for.
And there were other wonderful signs. In the city of the Street at the Wall, spreads on interbank interest rates dropped like manna from Heaven and rates on credit default swaps fell to the ground as dead birds from the almond tree, and the people who had lived in foreclosure were able to borrow again.
Black gold gushed from the ground at prices well below $140 per barrel. In hospitals across the land the sick were cured even though they were uninsured. And all because the Child had pronounced it.
And this is the testimony of one who speaks the truth and bears witness to the truth so that you might believe. And he knows it is the truth for he saw it all on CNN and the BBC and in the pages of The New York Times.
Then the Child ventured forth from Israel and Palestine and stepped onto the shores of the Old Continent. In the land of Queen Angela of Merkel, vast multitudes gathered to hear his voice, and he preached to them at length.
But when he had finished speaking his disciples told him the crowd was hungry, for they had had nothing to eat all the hours they had waited for him.
And so the Child told his disciples to fetch some food but all they had was five loaves and a couple of frankfurters. So he took the bread and the frankfurters and blessed them and told his disciples to feed the multitudes. And when all had eaten their fill, the scraps filled twelve baskets.
Thence he travelled west to Mount Sarkozy. Even the beauteous Princess Carla of the tribe of the Bruni was struck by awe and she was great in love with the Child, but he was tempted not.
On the Seventh Day he walked across the Channel of the Angles to the ancient land of the hooligans. There he was welcomed with open arms by the once great prophet Blair and his successor, Gordon the Leper, and his successor, David the Golden One.
And suddenly, with the men appeared the archangel Gabriel and the whole host of the heavenly choir, ranks of cherubim and seraphim, all praising God and singing: “Yes, We Can.”

I have laughed out loud at both pieces, not least because it reflects the biblical text so well; while making the strong political points. Congratulations

Very funny...Go Obama
Amelia, Global Village, Globe
ditto. April Cornelius, I have been wondering same thing myself. I'm not a church person, but I remember reading a verse in the Bible that said; " And he seduced the masses with his words". This was refering to the Anti-christ. It gives me the creeps especially since the media protects him so much.

i am so saddenned to see our great country reduced to sheep being led to slaughter. You are electing a president folks, look at the records, look at the associations, Get your heads out of the cool aid jug and wake up! This country will be torn apart and the money is already leaving our shores
john, boca raton, usa
Oh, Mr. Baker - this would have me in stitches...were I a Brit. As it is, it has me nearly in tears! You cannot know how accurately you have caught the tenor of the American media. "O" is quite a speaker. I just wish voters would remember we are not hiring a speaker, but electing a president.
Caral, SoCalif, USA
Are you seriously speaking of Obama as if he is Jesus? I am somewhat dumbfounded after having read this.
Is Obama the Anti-Christ? Many have raised this point and I myself, espceially after having read this article which praises him as he is God himself, truly wonder.
I pray God be with us.
April, Cornelius,
If he isn't elected, we all are in peril due to the riots that have been instructed by the Child. We are damned if we do and also damned if the Child doesn't win.
Cheryl, Gulf Breeze, USA
Mr. Baker,
Kudos. You made me smile during a time that a smile seemed the most impossible of feats.
May I ask? What happens when the villein realize that the Child cannot turn water into wine?

""If he is elected, he will be assassinated by some heroic American Patriot.....perhaps sooner?""
Does anyone else see how insane this is, or is it just me? Free speech and stupidity are not synonomous.

Remember, this is the guy who just a few years ago said it would be irresponsible to apply for job that he wasn't qualified for. (Obama saying he wouldn't persue the presidency) He needs his big voice and big useless words to prop up the vacuum of a career and pool of knowlege he has not.

Yes, please pray for the USA if Obama gets into office. I am really worried about what is going to happen to our country if this radical (Obama) gets into office.

I love the satyre! If there are praying people on your side of the pond, please pray for us. Obama and what he represents has some of us really worried. His type of salvation will kill the USA; he will finish her.

On our side of the pond, only a small percentage truly believe the media garbage; watch the Hwood propaganda films; watch the Emmys or Oscars or Bill Maher. The victories of the diciples and the annointed one are all orchestrated and stolen. The votes are not real and they prevent reform.

Thank god for the brains of the British. The gulliable Americans are voting for this anti-Christ and corrupt Chicago leader and the media bar fox (Thank god for Prophet Rupert) are aiding and abetting his endeavor. God bless America!!
Hooray for Hollywood -- and Axelrod & Obama.

Loved this - I wish more journalists wrote stuff like this, but they're too busy following the "Oh, great one!"
Jeff Webber, New York, NY, USA
I loved reading the piece - it's everything a great piece of satire should be. I am, however, terrified by the comments. As a American living abroad, I have finally come to the conclusion that most Americans don't have a CLUE about the impact of our political process on the rest of the world...
Susan, Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria
A very intersting story and you put it very well. The "child" has been spreading false stories about McCain and his tribes on the South side of Chicago began singing osana to him. Also,he told the media that he was putting Bill Clinton on work as if he is the Master . Funny very very.

The story may be clever and funny to some; but personally I feel, and think it shows disrespect to both God and those who love His Son. Yes, I realize the point of it and I agree with the point of the article; but still do not like the way it was made. Just a fyi.
Pat, Bertha, US
I am concerned that the satrire in thios story is lost on 1/2 the voting population in the US. They (and the fawning media "intellectual elites") are two busy bolstering the deeply engrained guilt that has been driven into our national psyche for over 40 years to see the humor and parody.
Tom, Atlanta, USA
I personally think that this country is going down the toilet and Obama is the Ty-d-bowl man.

Nick Brown said that Obama would be elected PM of the UK by a country mile. I propose that the UK take Obama and save us the horror that will follow if, God forbid, he is elected our President. Before you jump at this offer, please read up on what Jimmy Carter did to our country. Obama is worse.
Blaine Bonnell, Bear Lake, United States of America
I'd like to congratulate Gerard Baker on keeping the art of satire alive. What a pleasure to read his opinion piece! Here in America, we are far too serious and far too determined not to notice that Obama is black. In any case, I echo the feelings of Roxanna from Phoenix.
Jan, Cincinnati, OH, USA
Does anyone know if there is any truth to the rumor that Obama had the American flag removed from this jet on his trip to Europe?
Lisa, Alpharetta, GA,
If Obama were up for UK prime minister, he'd win by a country mile over any politician here. It's inspiring that he's still in the running against a political machine only slightly less nasty than ZanuPF. If he wins it will restore faith in USA.
Nick Brown, London, UK
I would like to know how Obama can lead Americans when he is embarrassed to be one?
Roxanna, Phoenix, USA
This was very funny and very nice to see Obama didn't fool anyone. I read an article about his speech in Germany and how people walked away basically saying "What the Hell was that Guy talking about?" Scary thing is, there are enough idiots in this country that have swallowed his tripe.

Well Done....You know I actually think the Obama lemmings hear the heavenly choir singing when they see him take the stage.

This is funny, but only because it's a Brit writing rather than, say, Anne Coulter. I'd have lost my sense of humor if I'd had to live in the US for the last decade, when the vile, vicious, corrupt Republican monster has shredded civil debate.

There is an old prediction the USA to be demolished at time of 44th president. It looks like Obama is assuming the historical role.

Excellently biting satire, Mr. Gerard Baker. I will dare opine that you outdid Rush Limbaugh's "Barack the Magic Negro" as the funniest piece of mockery of Barack Obama I have yet seen in this presidential election.

He definitely impresses me, as he fits so well into the enclave of American Politicians (World Politicians of similiar ilk included). Even greater than did Houdini, they all have proven that they are indeed what they appear not to be. Obama, like the Pied Piper, draws them like flies.

Keith , Seattle, United States of America
Two things; why no "apologies to Private Eye" who have been doing this slant for years on topical subjects? Second, why isn't anybody asking why Obama is there in the first place? This is simply because he is sanctioned by the Daly clan, without which his rise would not have been momentous.
Ian SISLEY, Las Cruzes, NM,
This was great! The comments generated are even better, except for the fawning ones. Glad to see some perspective, and not the U.S. elect-Obama news media (aka. ABC, CBS, and NBC)

Joseph Goebbels of the Hitler regime said that if you tell a lie long enough, soon it will appear as truth. How sad that many have come to believe the "truths" of the media. The only truth that has stood the test of time and will stand forever is the Word of God. That is where I'll stake my claim!
Sherrie, Independence, KY, USA
This is stellar! A perfect satire of the image of Barack HUSSEIN Obama that the media has been trying to paint.

What's the true meaning of this election? That Dewey's plan of the A H A of the early 20th century has worked to destroy faith in Jesus Chris in the U.S.,the:"that the classrooms will become the new churches, that the teachers, the new preachers in the schools" Hence, no critical thinking skills.

Why are we dwelling on Muslim terrorists. No major attacks since 2001 and even the perpetrators of this are in question. You are listening to a globalist speech. Want to get rid of nuclear weapons in the middle east; start with Israel.

Barrack Obama is not Jesus nor Hitler, he lacks the experience to be either one. He even lacks the experience or wisdom to be President, but then that didn't stop George W. Bush either and look what we got.
Barrack Obama is really the second term of Jimmy Carter, who will bring back gas shortages..

The scary thing in all this is that so many people WILL see him as the next messiah, not knowing our True Messiah. As Christians we must remain alert and ready through all of this. Tough times are coming! Always hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Even a deflating balloon makes a lot of noise, but in the end, it's just that...a lot of noise with nothing left but an empty bag.
Obama talks a lot but says nothing. Change...change...change..sounds good, but his bag of ideas is very empty. Like lemmings going off a cliff.....

That's excellent. I hope he lives up to the hope he engenders.
Let's not see him sacrificed on the altar of greed and corruption, urged on by pious unbelievers.
The second coming - how appropriate that he be a black American, of a mixed marriage no less.
And that his wife is so powerful too.
Sheila Davis, Mudgeeraba Qld, Australia
Too bad everyone compares BHO's skills with Hitler. BHO groupies just tune out. The visceral hatred for GWB has clouded judgment, and they don't realize they're about to elect a fraud. He was in the state legislature when we went to Iraq. He has never had to make a tough decision and defend it.

The New Messiah has arrived.

As usual everyone is falling for the Left-Right paradigm. If any of you Americans had any sence you wouldn't be voting for McCain or Obama! They are both 'chosen ones' for the establishment. I noticed that many who read this article and liked it are still going to vote for Obama! WHAT?
Nic, london, England
Marginally clever stuff which reminds me of the dearth of good satire that has come out of the UK since " The Life of Brian." A satire that focused on the fawning & calculating leaders Obama visited would have been more telling. I'm quite sure that Bush has already struck them off his Christmas list

A great speaker does make a great leader. Calling Hitler a great leader is not exactly difficult. He was incredibly effective. The problem, of course, was what he was allowed to do. Frankly, the Republicans should be scared. They have prepared the way for the Antichrist by removing barriers.

Does only 143 days in office mean that he is unable to lead a nation out of the fiasco, BUSH? I for one, DO NOT want a "Lifer" politician as President. A fresh set of eyes to see the problems and then the courage to unite America to fix them is what we need now...

Isn't this how Hitler was thought of a few decades ago?
How eloquent, following is a quote from a Hitler biography:
"Hitler became leader of the Nazi party and built up membership quickly, mostly because of his powerful speaking ability."
A great speaker does not a great leader make!
Lilith, Auburn, WA
"The Annointed one has charisma (much like B Clinton) and fools people when speaking". He lacks experience. Obama was only in the Senate office for 143 days when he decided to run for president. He is counting on Allah's blessing to get him to office of Pres. of US. US are smarter than that. G.J.
G. Johnson, San Diego, USA
With the U.S. media having treated Mr. Obama's vacuous candidacy as the arrival of The True Messiah (the supposed Annointed One of two millenia past was bogus, don't you know), it is refreshing for Americans to read an incisive counterpoint from the far more sophisticated, worldly-wise UK press.
Shane Usary, Johnson City, United States

Great illustration of media bias in our country. Although it is fictional, it is not that far from how Obama's followers think of him. I still cannot believe more people do not see this man for the fraud that he is.
Eric Clausen, Proctorville, OH, United States of America
This is a scream! "In the great Battles of Caucus and Primary he smote the conniving Hillary...and their barbarian hordes of Working Class Whites." But one small historical correction: "The One" only won the Battles of Caucus--with the help of his own rowdy hordes of "Creative(cough)Class" Zealots.

Beautiful.
Deby Debelack, Seattle, USA
I'm surprised that lots of people have missed one of the major issues that Obama's visit raises i.e. why is political representation of Black people so poor in the UK? Is it directly linked to the lack of aspiration on the part of some black children here? Dare we talk about institutional racism?

Tom Uhing , Fordyce NE, U.S.
It's nice to see someone from the UK areeing with what Rush Limbaugh has been saying for awhile!!
GREAT writing!! Hit the nail squarely on the head!!!
randy, Broken Arrow, USA
Looks like the McCain trolls are out in force on this one. I swear it's just the same few people posting over and over again. Somehow I think they've missed the actual message of the piece.
Dave, Oxford, UK
It would be a sad world if there were no optimism. People mock inspiration because it is a threat to convenient disappointment. Of course Obama isn't the Messiah. In fact, he's a politician. He just happens to be a politician who is not afraid to try to inspire. Enjoy it, it's rare but productive
Dylan Bry, Carlsbad, USA
This is clever writing to be sure but without substance, honesty, or truth. Bush, Cheney, and all the other cowards that promoted this war (Hannity, Limbaugh) all these fake flag pin lying patriots will enjoy your article. All the stupid unthinking people will love it.
Stephen Bleeds , Houston , Texas
This is the friggin' funniest thing I've read in some time.
DC, Buhl, Idaho, United States
Well thought piece, satire with partisan lens rethoric. You deserve credit for your work if you only agree it is satirical for entertainment purposes
Ambrose, Dallas TX USA
Ambrose Mageto, Dallas, TX, Usa
This really will go down as one of the most well written satires of modern English. Amazing though- how many Americans just don't get it. We really do not speak the same language....(will they get that- at least?)
ric, birmingham, UK
the naievity and cognitive dissonance within the conservative american public is really what is disturbing. After the past 8 years you should want ANY change and not a continuation of policy.
justin Sands, San Diego, United States
I have been justly accused many times of being the consummate cynical cynic and am jealous that I did not write this article. It is a masterpiece!
joe lenzo, safety beach, australia
Kate in Southampton, I second that!!!
My kin are religious Bushies. They really do think he was given both elections by God (and not Diebold).

Thank you for bringing some humor in this election year to the colonies. I, unlike most of the world, did not drink the Kool-Aide. Right now the political horizon is looking pretty bleak and humor is exactly what we need! Thank you for pulling the pin on the holy hand grenade.
Toni, Leesburg, VA, USA
I'm crying, that was so funny! I would love to see this read by Chris Matthews.
Cindy Graham, Nashville,
Thanks Gerard for putting to print what the rest of us were secretly thinking. . .great humor and I love it.
Ronda, oroville, california, usa
This is the most fun I've had in a long time. Truth comes through humor. Great writing.
Jeanne, Roanoke, USA
Very well done Gerard; but I'm concerned my friend. Since the 'mother country' has turned herself inside out to accomodate the pagan Ishmaelites, who have taken over your land, do you not think they'll be reoffended again by your prose from, gasp, the bible?
Stephen R. Leach, Lexington, SC, USA
Spot on
Dicko, Brooklyn,
That is one good read ... If I wasn't already a lead singer in the Republican choir, Gerard Baker's sermon would have made me a convert.
:)
Lucy, Allentown, USA
As others have said before me...brilliant, simply brilliant!
J. Welch, Charlottesville, VA, USA
Incredible, hilarious, and (mostly and unfortunately) quite true. Great work!!
Chandler, Atlanta, GA, USA
You made me laugh so hard that my sides hurt and I'll probably be one of the ones voting for him.
Brilliant piece of writing.
Janet White, Tacoma, US
Wonderful piece. I heard it on Rush's show and I couldn't way to read it for my self. Great job Mr. Baker. Keep up the good work Sir.
Jose A. Menendez, Tampa, U.S.A.
I am greatly heartened that someone in Europe can clearly see the Obama truth through all the Obama razzle-dazzle hype. Now, I only hope America can see the same! Fantastic column!
D H, Florida, USA
What Blasphemy. wish I had written this. Cheers!
don Taylor, Katy, USA
i think for the most part people have no idea what they are talking about. how bout you all visit the middle east before making such blind judgments.
Stephanie, Somewhere,
The REAL OBAMA has stood up for all to see and hear, best of all it came right out of his own mouth. Good job Gerard,
Brilliant!!!!!

Wow! The dry brit humor! Quite entertaining. God help us if he is elected!
Tim, Mesquite, Texas
EXCELLENT!!! Please write more! I haven't enjoyed a read like this in a long time.
Kathy, Westville, USA
THANK YOU. Absolutely brilliant.
Mark, Binghamton, NY, USA
As a UK resident in the US, I'm a keen Obama supporter and this hilarious piece had me giggling throughout. Sadly though, it seems that many in the US, not being as familiar as we are with satire, have yet again missed the point, and seen in it what they want to - opprobrium. (Look it up, people.)
Elisabeth Davis, Bethesda, MD, USA
Thank you for this accurate and objective account.
Rey, Bangkok, Thailand
Let us pray !!
Thomas Powers, Pine Knoll Shores, United States
Bless you, oh wise one and your silver pen which writes the truth and now, from your pen to the voter's hand.
jamado, Pearland, USA
You're a good writer, but you highly underestimate those who are pro-Obama. We know he has his flaws, but it's not his fault the media fawns over him. It's also hilarious that these people in the comments are using this as one more reason to vote for McCain. A likeable guy as President? Never!
Lauren, Sacramento, USA
Now THAT is satire at it's brilliant best! (Taking notes, New Yorker Magazine?)
Alice Galeotti, Spokane, WA, USA
Ha! I haven't laughed this hard in a long time! Thanks to the author for the pick-me-up!
Ron, Riverton, Wyoming, USA
Mighty fine satire........and fitting.
ONTIME, SUISUN CITY, USA
It's funny...we have a once in a generation candidate who inspires us as Reagan and Kennedy did, and some people want to spin this as something bad. Do you guys kick your dogs when you get home too?
Rob, Minneapolis, USA
Sadly most American university professors would have probably failed you for this creative writing assignment. Regardless, you earned your paycheck today, Mr. Baker.
Torgny, Los Angeles, United States
If y'all are so enchanted by this snake oil salesman then by all means take him-please!

One of the best pieces of Political satire ever written.
Shawn Bozaeth, ellizabethtown, USA
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
Annie Hancock, Bath, UK
Absolutely astounding! And I too am voting for McCain.
Miguel Montoya, Spanaway, WA, USA
The finest piece of political satire I have ever seen!!!! Mark Twain is twitching in his grave with jealousy. Fantastic, inspired. Magnificent.
Aloha
Jamie, Kailua-Kona, USA
I enjoyed this very much. However, it can be read not as satire, but as truth. We need leaders who can inspire us. It's been a long time.
Bertrand Jones, Tashkent, Uzbekistan
Outstanding, simply outstanding! and exactly why I'm voting for John McCain.
Roger, New York, New York, U.S.A.
Wonderfully written--give us more!
MaryLee, Colorado Springs, USA
Well put. A breath of fresh, oxygen-rich, air.
Ryan, Maumee, USA
That was hilarious, and I loved the live reading that was on Hannity tonight. Kudos for writing this, it was brilliant biting satire of how Obama is being treated now.
Joe, Mesa, AZ, United States
This is a masterpiece! One of the finest political satires I've ever seen. Every word and phrase is so perfectly chosen. I hope this receives the applause and attention it deserves.
Jeff, Phoenix, USA
Very funny. And I can't wait to vote for Obama.
Oli, Easton, PA, USA
Bravo!
Elizabeth, Warwick, USA
OH Thank you, thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anthony is so right it is a shame that we have to go to a UK paper to get this. Please more!! Finally there is sanity left in the world, if not the US.
Gerad, Cleveland, USA
Thanks for frightening me underneath my bed.
Marsh, sewell, nj, USA
Brilliant satire - on the mark, nonpartisan, biting and, best of all, humorous.
Franklin B. Tucker, Belmont, Mass., USA
It is understood the fear of conservatives as they see Obama sweeping from to coast to coast, while his vision and policies seem as it's going to grab the american nation with a storm - after eight miserable years of failed policy.
But too bad for you conservatives, you fail
Jacob, Brooklyn,
Brilliant...simply Brilliant
BJL, Seattle, US
I think the article is brilliantly funny and uncannily accurate. I'm voting for Barack Obama. The youthful exhuberance alone is reason enough. The stale air of old politics needs to be under the headstone of shame. My compliments to Times on-line.
Bob R, Tulsa, United States
Next time someone says to me the Brit's ain't got no sense of humor I'm gonna show them this smashing piece.
Thanks for the truth with laughs.
Eric, Lakeville, USA
I am an Obama supporter but I did enjoy this witty piece of satire. To the critics who bemoan his lack of specifics: American voters forget that they need to take responsibility and actually research the candidates' specific positions; for the record, Obama's are nicely laid out on his website.
Samantha, Durham, NC, USA
Oh my goodness. You Sir, deserve Kudos for this article. The way you wove so much of the Bible into this, i almost could believe this would be in 2 Hezekiah. :-) Most of us might have been able to do the 1st paragraph, but you really put some thought into this. I love the satire...
steven, sacramento, ca, usa
Finally, a good candidate and no one can stand it,,,.racists, racists all.
Arni, Portland, USA
That is hilarious! Most excellent prose Sir.
Billy, Hoover, United States
A brilliant indictment of the sycophantic American press and a study in mass hysteria as well. Please send this piece across the pond.
Greg Dail, Smithfield, NC, US
Fun and interesting piece of writing. However, reading the comments here I can't help but shake my head but then again this is a segment of the American electorate. Barack is not the messiah but I will still choose him over John McCain anytime. The same people who are crying fraud, voted for Dubya.
Andrew, Baltimore,
I love it. Poetic, beautiful and a great treaure to keep. Yes we can, Amen.
Ndigbo, Boston, USA
I am profoundly speechless...This is incredible. Please, please, please write more columns like this - this is great! Keep up the god work!

Here come all the Drudge trolls!
Lee, London,
I find the article highly offensive. I'm no Obama supporter, but this just isn't amusing at all.
Justin Kase, Martin, GA, USA
Despite being an Obama supporter and critic of the bush-supporting Gerard Baker, I have to say that this is hilarious! However, once in a while, there are inspirational individuals who come around and show us a better way, and it is in the nature of the cynics to tear them down.
Vaseem, london, uk
Wonderfully written!! When it comes to wit, you can't beat the British!!!

Mary, Yorkville, USA
Oh, look. It's yet another article about Obamania. How innovative and creative.
The anti-Obama rhetoric is as baseless and fanatical as the pro-Obama movement.
Ryan Smith, Dallas,
Outstanding bit of wit. It is truly hysterical to watch the Left become caricatures of themselves! It makes this kind of stuff easy to write. Just write what they present to you!
Norma Drew, Charleston, SC, USA
Simply. This is awesome!
Michael, La Mirada, CA, USA
As an Obamaniac from the same City of Chicago as The Child, let me say this is positively brilliant. While the whole parade can get a tad silly at times, I do find it refreshing that optimism has returned to the conversation.
Jason Slade, Chicago, IL, USA! USA! USA!
A very well written piece of satire. I'm sure many of us see it as a brilliant reflection of not just Obama, and the American electoral process, but of our own political "leaders". It's a great pity that such satire is so absent from our television channels.
Mike, Epworth, UK
O Giraldus the Recorder of the ancient land of the hooligans I salute you, you are the One!
Hwntw, CwmHwntiGwmRhydyCeirw,
Brilliant! Incredibly well written article, but missing 2 things: the burning bush and some stone tablets ;)
Greg, denver, USA
Loved the article Mr. Baker. Wish we had you in the US media.
I still beleive that Barack Hussein Obama is a good example of Affirmative Action run Amok.

Ruth, Colorado Springs, CO, USA
The only thing we needed in the article was;
'One ring to rule them all, and in the darkness bind them!'
This just shows that Britannia still rules when it comes to satire!
Well done!
Glubber, Olympia, WA, USA
This is absolutly BRILLIANT! I will be printing this out and sharing this with all my friends tonight! You are a genius!
Ray, Dallas, TX, USA
Religious Right...so people who have uncompromising values about family, life, freedom, and responsibility are terrible? Bush was a moderate at best, he didn't lean Right at all except with tax breaks (god I hate having more of my own money) but he did spend alot....so yes Moderate.
Jarrod, Anaheim, US
Sir, you will surely be cast out of the Tribe for the blasphemous words you have written.

Amen, Amen I say to thee.
The last time I saw that many people in front of the Victory Tower we were heading into a World War. Both orators support a very similar agenda, save the "living space" (watch out Canada).
The best editorial I have heard in decades.
God Bless Gerald Baker
Jim, Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan
This the best written artical in a long time.
go fox, wpb, USA!!!
Congratulations! You nailed it.
texmexgal, Dallas, Tx, USA
Exceptionally well written! I don't think Mark Twain could have written a better political satire piece. I hope you stick with this theme up to the "harvest month of the appointed year."
Mike Harlin, Tustin, California, USA
Blasphemy
Brian, Olathe, KS
If Obama is running for President of the United States of America, what is he doing campaigning in all over Europe? He is a 'citizen of the world'
I don't know about other Americans, but that really bothers me? This article is satire. Unfortunately, satire holds the truth up and makes fun of it.
C Harrison, Dallas, TX, USA
The problem is, my friend, that Obamatians might take this for the Gospel, canonize it, as the New Testament to "Earth in the Balance".
Bob Tackett, Mathiston, MS, US
Great writing, great satire, great work!
John, Columbus, OH, USA
Significant change that takes the form of conflict resolution begins in an atmosphere of trust, hope, faith, love and persistence. These five qualities are not sufficient in and of themselves to lead to salutary effects but they are necessary. Obama vision transcends narrow partisanship.
gibbs, NYC, NY
That has to be the wittiest thing I have read this year. Bravo.
Jacob B., Seattle, USA
Wonderful piece! Thank God there is some sanity in Europe after all. I'm printing this out to show all my friends!

Mildly amusing at best. But all the toothless inbreds who believe what the see on Fox "News" and think evolution is a fib and that the world is only 6000 years old should enjoy it.
Jason, Los Angeles, USA
Brilliant indeed. And risky too: Are folks these days familiar enough with the AV (KJV) Bible to appreciate all the allusions?
Joel H., Evans, GA, Occupied CSA
A wonderful piece! After 8 years of being embarrassed by Dubya and his Bushanistas, Obama may just be the man to help the US regain it's dignity.
Bob Podstawski, Butler, New Jersey, USA
like Don Quixote said: "Sancho, the dogs are barking, we are mopving ahead"
the future cannot be stopped.
Obama is the future
Bill O'Reilly, Iowa, USA
Great article...this guy knows at least the surface area of the Gospel....Not be be completely insensitive, but if you are not from the US; just comment on the article, don't tell us who you support over whom...frankly it is not the world's decision to elect either candidate. we don't vote for yours
JB, Orange County, US
Absolutely the most brilliant article written this election cycle. That the depth, insight, and clear understaning had me wishing it would never end. The article should certainly win a Pulitzer Prize. Mr Baker should also be nominated for a Nobel Prize in journalism.
Bruce Colella, Wildwood (St. Louis), USA
Well said ! ! !
k.laughlin, kendallville,in, usa
I love it! Even though I think Obama is going to win because there really is no opposition with McCain, I'll still vote Republican because it is the slightly lesser of two evils. But the satire is the best I've seen in years! See also the Jib Jab skit of the presidential race. Excellent satire!!
AndrewP, Chicago, USA
Our world has grown a lot more cynical since last we heard speeches like this. You could have written the same parody of JFK's speeches, or Martin Luther King's.
What you are making fun of is putting passion and hope into political speeches. It is an art we have not seen in seen in generations.
William Hopper, Kingston, Canada
Right on. Excellent. Creative. You captured the picture perfectly.
Thank You
Dennis, Damascus, USA
I feel sinful after laughing the whole way through this article, for while it is an excellently crafted piece that's dead on, I'm not sure if it crosses into blasphemy.
Chris, Syracuse, NY, USA
Satire at its finest!
Teresa, Illinois,
Yes nothing good can ever happen! The US can never have an eloquent, intelligent president who can give a stirring speech. Instead let's elect someone who makes one cringe when he speaks, graduated 5th from the bottom of his class and thinks Iraq borders Pakistan. That's a reality we can believe in.
Donna, Boise, US
No Roy all of that is not a crime. But neither does it qualify him to be President. These same things could be said for someone who gives speeches for a living . As for war, lets not forget BO's comments about Afghanistan also Pakistan.
Geoff, Illinois, USA
Why do Americans forget there are plenty of people to vote for other the Republican and Democrat....if you dislike both candidates find one you do like. Don't let them monopolize the country
DJ, Seattle, US
This article is spreading across America by email right now so I have a feeling you will be getting your well deserved praise for an excellent article.
David, Dallas, TX, USA
The Brits really know how to write satire. This is excellent. I hope this writer can be featured in America.
KT, MN, USA
What a labored, heavy-handed attempt at satire this is. You've outdone yourself in pomposity and condescension, Mr Baker.
Caroline, New York, US
How easy and comfortable it is for those whose profession's intellectual demands are to think about syntax and concerns, such as, "will the masses think I'm funny?" A terrible waste of energy and distastefully arrogant in tone and perspective. Try politics and see how funny real life can be.
Michael, Kansas City, USA
Hilarious, clever. Will definitely pass it on to all of my friends.
Ingrid Soldan, Melvin Village NH, USA
Excellent. I wonder when the media swoon in the U.S. will be over for Obama? Probably not until February of '08 when they see he hasnt solved global warming, brought about world peace and de nuclearized the world by waving a magic wand. Lord help us if he is elected, it will be 1976 all over again
Roger, NYC, USA
You realize, nobody who's voting for Barack actually thinks he's any kind of "messiah"... it's only the detractors who think we believe that. It'll be great to have a respectable president who doesn't embarrass us overseas once again... one who can actually speak with clarity and intelligence.
Diana, Houston, TX, USA
I guess having intellect is a crime. I guess having the ability to translate ideas and thought into words that are cogent is a crime. I guess inspiring people not to apathetic is a crime. I guess not seeing war as the solution to every problem is naieve. Bring on ww 4.Bring on Mcain the new caesar.
roy, Goodyear, USA
As always, thanks must go to Matt Drudge, the real king of all media. He puts it up, some people see it there. Neal, Rush, they find it there, then suddenly, 30 million people know about it.
Bake, Atlanta, GA, USA
Just watch. The world will soon see that America's true soul will emerge at the polls and this so called "Mesiah" will be truly identified as a "pariah".
James, Phoenix, USA
Superb, simply superb in every way - a keeper for sure!
Joanne, Niagara Falls, Canada
I have sent this to my liberal cousin in Norway. Hopefully she will start to understand this this guy is nothing but a confidence man.
miles, Punta Gorda, Florida, USA
Great job Mr. Baker, you really proved a point. I'm sure this piece will be regarded as one of the greatest works of satire of the 21st century.
People should never be excited by anything, let alone politics.
Smitty, Los Angeles,
And more excellent still. For it is told the disciple of unbriddled expectation will fill the land with great promise. And the land will become wet with gasoline and the people will rejoice for now they are only paying $3.50 per gallon. And the lion shall eat the lamb, it is hungry and more powerful
Lloyd, Dillon,
You're just jealous because we actually elect our leaders...
Luke, Philadelphia, PA
Outstanding! It's wonderful to see that someone has escaped Jonestown Part II!
Chris, Columbus, OH, USA
Neal Boortz just read the whole article on the radio...perfect!
Seth, Durham, NC, USA
A literary masterpiece ! A shame few in our media will dare tell the truth about this con artist.
Tim, Phoenix, AZ, USA
Satire is funny stuff. This is funny stuff. Will Obama's supporters see that or will they wig out like they did on the New Yorker cover.
MikeF, Iowa, USA,
Why does it take only a few not so brainwashed media folks to see through this Elmer Gantry of a politician? He's nothing more than a revival preacher who is a phony. As other astute posters have pointed out, Obama isn't about substance, he's about more nebulous things such as change.
Erin, Virginia, USA
A most excellent assessment and article. Lofty rhetoric comes cheaply, but as one of our fast food commercials pointedly asked "Where's the beef?" All I see is repackaged bread crumbs. One of our political cartoonist had the senator saying in Berlin - 'Ich Bin ein Beginner.' God help us!
Mike, Memphis, USA
Funny because its satirical and ridiculous. We think this because we know Obama isnt the divine being portrayed and the acts described are far fetched and laughable? But we gobble up similar works about someone born ~2008 years ago? Why is one piece obviously fiction and the other not?
Bill, oyster bay, USA
Excellent, excellent, with a side of more excellent. One of these days I have to visit the UK.
Anthony, Philadelphia, USA
There only seems to be a few poster who actual get the point of this article. It isn't pro or anti Obama, it's merely revealing the way in which some sections of the media are portraying him. Satire at it's finest. Bravo Mr Baker!
DaveCottle, Shrewsbury, UK
A great article - wish you were American media - we need you!
You captured the world tour perfectly. Quite scary - but Americans are wise in the end. November will be the proof.
Kay , Birmingham, AL, USA
Great satire. And great satire only happens when it contains the truth. Brilliantly written and good to see that not everyone over the pond is taken in my this snake oil salesman.

Great satire. And great satire only happens when it contains the truth. Brilliantly written and good to see that not everyone over the pond is taken in by this snake oil salesman.
Pat, Flemingsburg , USA
Simply brilliant!! A riotously funny indictment of our media and the people of our times.
Helen, WVA, US
Smashing! British wit and wisdom at its best. I'm afraid, however, that too many of your American cousins will
miss the message.
R.C.Oates, Brookhaven, MS,
Great work BUT Barack Obama is the BEST politician to step forward since JFK !! He is NOT Jesus Christ but he is better than BUSH, BLAIR, McCain and The Queen.
joe citizen, Anywhere , USA
Absolutely brilliant!!
Melissa, Dallas, USA
Very cleaver, and lots of hidden and not so hidden truth.
Larry Whitaker, Oakland, OR, USA
Great fun to read; That's why we watch Fox.
I got it on Fox News that the great crowd we saw in Germany was do to the people waiting to see some bands perform. Just like the Dems to make it look like they're there for Obama.
Sher, Philadelphia, USA
Brilliant. Brilliant. I'm thinking of buying ear plugs. Wherever I go I hear the word, "Obama". When I turn on the tv I hear the word, "Obama". The radio, "Obama." We Americans are the second most brain washed nation in the world. The other nation being North Korea.
Mike, Los Angeles, USA
Verily, verily I say unto you, let us all pray that the young messiah shall bring forth your message to all the infidels in the new world as he makes his trek on top of the waters across the ocean. Hillarious.
John Mark, Pearland, TeXAS, USA
The thing that makes great satire"great" is when it rings true. That's what makes this funny but quite scary at the same time. Perhaps the bright light eminating from Mr Obama has smote the masses blind so they can't see him for who he really is. God in heaven help the USA if/when he gets elected.
Paul, Manhattan, Ks, USA
This must be one of the most entertainingly well written pieces I've ever read. A truly great piece of satire that cuts deep into the myth of the Annointed One.
