It's bad enough that allotments given to East End families by one of Winston Churchill's friends are being bulldozed to make a path through London's Olympic village. Now the Olympic Behemoth is bearing down on Royal Greenwich Park.
This is cultural vandalism. Allotments are a vibrant part of our culture, as English as roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, although rather healthier. Manor Garden allotments were destroyed in favour of the 2012 Olympics, despite being a philanthropic gift supporting 150 families - and could easily have supplied food to the Olympic site.
So much for the Olympics' green credentials. Greenwich Park is next on the Olympic hit list. The Grade I listed, Charles II landscape is a Unesco World Heritage Site with archaeology from Roman and Tudor times. Henry VIII frolicked here and it is where both Elizabeth I and Mary were born. This historic park has been picked for a three-day equestrian event despite being far too small.
Greenwich's 183 acres is supposed to accommodate the type of event held at Badminton, for instance, where the trials take up 1,500 acres. The Olympic equestrian course has been shortened but that doesn't alter the number of people it will attract (250,000 throng to Badminton).
Royal Parks say they are working closely with Locog (London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games) to avoid “impact” on historic trees. Never mind impact, The Garden History Society says historic trees will have to be removed. Locog say it's too early to know. Either way the park is in for a hammering. And it won't be compensated, either: those who run events held in royal parks usually have to contribute to upkeep. The Olympics have got away with that one, too.
One of the ironies is that the annual Badminton horse trials began after the 1948 London Games in order to train riders for future Olympics, making Badminton an ideal venue for the 2012 event. But Locog says Badminton is out of the question because the games have to be “compact”. Which is, presumably, why Olympic football events are happening in places such as Manchester and Cardiff.
And then there is the Olympic pledge to “bring sport to the city”. I wonder if Greenwich residents are rushing out to buy a decent nag - at around £250,000 - plus horse box (another £250,000) before putting something aside for vet fees, feed...
If we're talking about city sport, I challenge Locog to come up with a better, greener, more inclusive endurance sport than gardening. If the International Olympic Committee can recognise ballroom dancing, why not allotment gardening?

Is there a protest organised yet?

Kristen, Greenwich,
To use Greenwich park for the 2012 is nothing short of a major act of wilful destruction and the act is being commiteed the LOC with the active support of the labour government. The park is 1000m by 800m , in terms of size the grounds of Buckingham palace are about 25% of the area of the park . END

Greenwich boasts Beacon Council for Sustainability status This is the worst example of sustainable tourism I can imagine, and if the park has to be closed for a long period before the event, it is also denying not only locals but also visitors the opportunity to visit this unique London park.
Catherine Mack, Greenwich, London, UK
It seems to me that the bloody horses and their bloody riders are going to trample all over the park whether we like it or not! SOMETHING MUST BE DONE TO STOP THEM TRAMPLING ALL OVER US WHO CARE ABOUT THE PARK!!!
margo smith, london,
Adelaide 4 Star 3 Day Event runs in the city park lands, originally attracted similar opposition to this but the last 10 years have seen the locals embrace the event. Demountable jumps means that within days after, the course is cleared. Shame all that money cant go into a permanent fixture though.
Seumas Marwood, Melbourne, Australian
No one in their right mind would support this plan. Londoners should protest in the strongest terms at being trampled by this sorry Olympic fiasco - it's not just mindless vandalism but willful destruction that can only get worse as the date gets closer and the flailing incompetence more obvious.
CJ Brown, Greenwich, England
Britain has long since descended into the role of a theme park. As such, we no longer hold anything sacrosanct as long as tourists will pay.
Mike Poulsen, Reading, Berkshire
This has been a rumbling sore in Greenwich for some time. People are being invited to unite and fight this destruction (thegreenwichphantom.co.uk and on facebook). Greenwich Council are unconcerned with the damage to the local history or its environment.
Richard , Greenwich , UK
There is this unfortunate need to have everything as close to London as possoble, without due regard for the logistics. This is why the mountain bike racing will take place in Surry, rather than Fort William on its World Championship course.
David Leslie, Perth, Scotland
Allotment gardening as an Olympic sport? PLEASE don't give the IOC ideas... what with the Cultural Olympiad about to stamp its clumsy boots all over the arts, we need some activities left uncontaminated by the hypocrisy, commercialism and arrogant destructiveness of the Olympics and its hangers-on.
Mike H, London, UK
Olympic vandalism :not just to the environment, to the city,to the businesses still awaiting their compensation, but epic vandalism to the public purse. The world-class venues in Athens are already falling into disprepair.Time to host the events permantly there.Boris should say NO to Greenwich.
David, Oxford,
Agreed.

Shirlee, London,
A bit over the top on the price of nag and horse box £12,000 for nag and £ 6,000 for box ,say as much as a football fan spends on a season ticket over a few years .But Badminton would be a better venue .
