On Sunday I accompanied my daughter to the Children's Baftas. We were expecting a jolly children's event but it was a very odd evening, and one that had most definitely not been devised for children. There were no games, no toys - and few children. The champagne-fuelled crowd was a peculiar mixture of middle-aged executives, harried creatives and young - in some cases very young - girls.
The amount of dewy, barely pubescent flesh on display was striking. Poured into tiny dresses, adorned with sequins, coiffed, buffed and made-up to perfection, they twinkled for cameras and guests alike, their unlined faces a marked contrast to the craggy majority.
It was one of the most disturbing events I have attended (and I've seen a few, believe me). From Keith Chegwin's inappropriate jokes to the breathless gyrations of the “hot” new girl band, the Saturdays, there was an unmistakable whiff of sleaze.
The scene was especially telling as I had also watched Britney Spears on The X Factor. Here is a woman, only 27, who in the past year suffered a public mental breakdown. Yet there she was, in hotpants and fishnets, on stage in front of screaming fans. It was intended as a PR triumph; but the cracks showed. Her dance routine was perfunctory, her eyes dead, her lyrics mimed.
There is no reason why Spears should be on stage - except that an industry grown fat on her work is unwilling to tighten its belt. She ought to be lying in a darkened room, or at least enjoying the money she's danced so hard to earn; instead, she's being wheeled around Europe like an organ-grinder's monkey.
Clearly, Britney's “people” (who include her father) think there's life in the old girl yet; but what will be left when she finally grinds to a halt?
At the Baftas, I sat next to a very beautiful, very sweet and very young girl: Selina Gomez, the 16-year-old star of the Disney Channel's The Wizards of Waverley Place. She, too, has musical ambitions - or at least those around her do. In the video for her song Tell Me Something she wears what can only be described as a fantasy French maid's outfit, dancing provocatively around a broom.
It recalls another video from ten years ago, in which a fresh-faced girl strutted for the cameras. She was older - 17 - and the get-up slightly different (fantasy schoolwear not fantasy maidwear), but the aim was the same: to employ an explosive combination of sex and extreme female youth to sell records.
I am no puritan. But as I watched Ms Gomez sashay on stage in heels and cocktail frock, I couldn't help wondering where she will be in ten years. I hope for her sake that she is not half as “successful” as Britney.

I saw Britney's TV interview over the weekend and all I saw was an exhausted and spiritless young woman who has literally been used by everyone, most notably her parents. She has been deprived of an ordinary life and she is clearly angry about it.
James Asbury, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
In my opinion the real reason Britney is doing a huge world tour, is because her father knows that he must fill the big void in her life of losing custody of her 2 sons. Her father knows by keeping her busy it will help to stop her getting depressed over the her greatest love her life her children!
Mary Morrell, Cheshire, United Kingdom
Sadly what you say has been reported many times in all of the entertainment businesses, and nothing changes.
Neil Murphy, Cromer,
Astute.
I spent 25 years in the pop machine and could tell you stories that would make your toes curl. It's always been this way - boys and girls controlled, bribed into sex, coerced into drug habits, and the younger the better. Some of the worst perpetrators are household names. Fame and money...

I think it's ridiculous to critise Britney for her X-Factor perfromance. Half of the acts that appeared to sing on the show as special guests mimed. "Same Difference" mimed during their performance and even the X-factor finalists mimed their version of "Hero" when they had to sing it.
Edward Coleman, Ryde,
Britney's appearance on The X-Factor was, in my opinion, insulting.
Here's a show which is supposed to hunt out talent, and judges them based on their live singing performance.
What does Britney do? She mimes, on a show dedicated to celebrating live performance. Shocking.
Sam, Cambridge, UK
I agree that objectifying shows like the article describes are disturbing, but kids naturally become 'sexualized' when they hit puberty. Anyone railing at western culture and suggesting that, left to their own devices, all teenagers would be asexual until they hit 18 is deluding themselves.
Andy, London,
Im all against the sexualising of young children. I get annoyed when my partner puts make up on my 10 yr old BUT Britney was 17 in THAT video, she was legally allowed to have children at 16!
Parents need to take more responsibilty, simple isnt it?
Nick Sutcliffe, Thrapston,
Normally when people have suffered a mental breakdown a return to work afterwards is seen as part of recovery. Who are you to judge Britaney's state of mind, her fitness to return to her job, or to what extent life as child-hood star effected what is reported to be bi-polar disorder.
jim, london,
Sheri - I also read that book and agree: it hits the nail firmly on the head. So difficult for children/teenagers to nurture honest friendships and innocent pleasures against this kind of background.
Nick, Exeter, Devon
Discussions like these always remind me when I was walking through a department store and saw underwear for sale with cherries on them marked for 5-10 year olds.
I thought to myself what kind of a world do we live in when main stream companies encourage the sexualisation of kids
Alex, Edinburgh,
I recently read a book called 'Blind Faith' by Ben Elton. It perfectly demonstrates the kind of culture we are heading towards. I've recently turned 18 and am fully aware of the amount of sexualisation in todays society. My 8 year old cousin copies dances from raunchy music videos.
Sheri, Swansea,
Precisely. There is something hypocritical, and just plain stupid, about a society that panics about paedophiles on every corner while permitting the blatant sexual objectification of children (e.g. Brittany's early pics). Children should be portrayed as, and allowed to be children until grown up.
Nick, Ipswich, UK
There's only one reason.
Money.
There is no "artist development" in music anymore (on the front end), and more importantly, no time for the mainstream artist to develop musically.
Get the product out, blitz the marketing, repeat.
We are in the disposable-lighter period of modern music.
Bradley, Los Angeles, USA
Totally agree. The sexualisation of young girls is out of control and should be of real concern to us all.
