One of Islam’s most secretive sects has begun a charm offensive to win support for plans to build Britain’s biggest place of worship.
Tablighi Jamaat, an ultra-orthodox religious movement, abandoned its traditional dislike of modernity and politics to set up a website, broadcast on YouTube and hire a Westminster lobbying company.
The group, which intelligence agencies fear is a gateway to extremism, wants to build a mosque with a capacity for 12,000 worshippers. It would cost up to £75 million. Outline proposals for the site, beside the London 2012 Olympic Park, also envisage a religious boarding school with places for 500 pupils.
If the scheme goes ahead the new mosque would dwarf other mosques and churches; Britain’s largest Anglican cathedral, in Liverpool, holds a congregation of 3,000.
Tablighi Jamaat’s plans have been in a state of flux for months. Strong local opposition has generated bad publicity about a “mega-mosque” and there have been reports that government ministers will seek to block planning permission. The group claims that it has dismissed Ali Mangera, the award-winning architect who drew up futuristic designs for the mosque complex, and is revising its plans. But Mr Mangera told The Times he was still involved in the project and expected an announcement soon.
To improve its image Tablighi Jamaat has hired Indigo Public Affairs, a company that specialises in major planning battles. Indigo lobbies councillors and other planning authorities, organises community consultation exercises and liaises with the media.
Indigo has put Tablighi Jamaat on YouTube with a short statement from an unnamed representative who tries to calm fears about the size of the mosque and says that it will reach its 12,000 capacity only once or twice a year.
The lobbyists have also created a mosque website which claims that the Tablighi Jamaat movement “stands for democracy and freedom” and is “a role model to promote social and religious integration”.
Despite these claims, the site also adds that “complete success in this world and the hereafter is only achieved in following the way of life shown by Muhammad and every other way leads to failure in this world and the hereafter”.
Observers of the Islamic world portray Tablighi Jamaat as an extremely strict movement intent on spreading its version of the Muslim faith around the world. Gilles Kepel, an expert on Islam, said that the movement preached “a rigorous, unifying vision of Islam” which became “an advance guard for political Islamists”.
French intelligence and the FBI have aired concerns that jihadi groups could easily find recruits among Tablighi Jamaat’s younger adherents. The movement maintains that it “utterly refutes any links to terrorism or terrorists”.
Its new website states: “We are a mainstream, predominantly apolitical organisation seeking to go about our faith in a peaceful way. We do not teach an extremist line, but we clearly can’t speak for every single one of those who have ever attended our mosques. There are several thousand people at our weekly gatherings.”

If you want to meet true muslims go to Azerbaijan. I worked there for 4 and half years. I admire the Azeris muslims. They celebrate ramadan because they want to . When I stopped eating or drinking in their presence, they say NO, this is my choice, but thank you for caring. UK muslims learn please..

The fact that this building is a Mosque is a red herring.
A mega store, mega disco, mega whatever should be judged on its impact on the local community.
In view of its proximity to the site of the 2012 Olympics, are we not in danger of destroying the community that the siting of the Olympic city was so lauded to benefit.
Is it any wonder that the working class community of that area feels abandoned by its so called representatives.
If that building were a factory, or Christian or commercial, it would'nt be considered.
Local Councillors take note; Do your jobs or stop taking the money.
Jory, London, UK
Without stating my religious background I'm concerned about some things common to perhaps a majority of English people:
Nations exist, we have ours and it has its own identity. It seems an unspoken cynicism about human relations that only by homogenizing nationalities can we avoid hating and hurting each other. It amounts to an ideology of ethnic cleansing by stealth. We aren't Middle Eastern, have no root in Islam, and aren't looking to be blended or altered into showing our nation to be partly so. In this 20 year blip in our history we have had Muslim presence thrust on us ( way out of proportion to numbers here ). No nation can continue where another people gradually inserts its ways over it. This mosque is but a major domination statement capping off a slow tide that got to this point, and would be unthinkable 5 years ago. This far and no further.
Islam did not produce this nation so preferred by so many muslims to their own. Our ways and beliefs and practices did. Enough tide

To Stephanie Anderson of the States, John B of Norwich & Peter of Cambridge,
http://pakistaniat.com/2007/01/02/churches-pakistan-church/
Did the "lack of freedom" you possess in "our" countries allow these churches to be built in Pakistan for example?
Raheal, Toronto, Canada
As a British Muslim, I do not want this gigantic mosque. I view this as extremely dangerous for community relations. Even if there was not so much existing antagonism towards Islam, the money ought to be better spent on Education & Health for our vastly under-privileged and under-performing community.
There are better and more urgent ways to be good Muslims, the first being that we need to do our utmost to promote the true essence of our religion, which is moderation, compassion and good citizenship in a country that has welcomed us, and in which, despite all the problems, we can thrive if we choose to.
To the promoters of this mosque, I say : Stop focussing on giant mosques, beards, veils and outdated attitudes and practices. There is so much that Islam can contribute to Society but you are choosing to suffocate Muslims under your medieval ways.
Saad S., London, UK
Will Muslims return the favor and let huge Churches or Temples be built in countries where they are the majority? HA! Funny, right? They are too busy tearing and burning down any traces of other religious houses of worship and building mosques on top of the ruins.
Stephanie Anderson, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA
Tablighi jamaat is totally against violence! There are several examples of people who were involved in activites labelled as violent and terrorist who have been reformed when they joined the tablighi movement.
Tablighi movement refutes all kind of terrorist activities and it's only mission is that all muslims should practise Islam in a peaceful manner and that is what they invite muslims to do.
It is peaceful and only blessed will be the place where they have a mosque.
Kamran, Lahore,
As someone who has no belief in religion I speak with some impartiallity. But as British I think that to allow any faith to start building places of worship of this size is somewhat dangerous to retaining our national identity. As the head of our Country is C of E I think allowing another faith to build a place of worship 4 times bigger than their largest one is one step towards a movement to try and put our country under a reglious diction.

Why should they have freedoms in our country when we have none in theirs?
John B, Norwich, UK
Beware of the Tablighi Jamaat. They are the stepping stones to other much worse things, and the first step in the dissociation of muslims from the societies they live in.
Germaine Yahya Ali , Brooklyn, NY/USA
A big mosque in London? Why not? It makes perfect sense.
Fabio C, Karachi, UK
For Muslims who were born and raised in this country: it is their country too. Just because they have different beliefs and often a different skin colour, doesn't mean that we should deny them the same rights that any other of our citizens enjoy.
We let people build synagogues and temples and other buildings that their communities wish to use. But when it comes to a mosque that they want to build with their own money on their own land, we're up in arms? Doesn't make sense to me.
I am repulsed by the comments of Armstrong below. Just remember that Jesus was not an Englishman, and there's nothing inherantly superior about us or our culture when compared to the rest of humanity, so get off your high horse...
Jim Duggan, London,
We need to respect different faith groups and if there is enough support to build this mosque then that is enough reason to let it be built, we need a better reason than the "not in our back yard" attitude so many of you seem to be portraying. Deciding how we (presumably this means white, middle class people) want our country to look is bordering on racism, this country is diverse and this should be celebrated. Also the "Christian" perspective put forward is not representative and as a Christian I would like to say that many in the Church have enough respect to engage with other faiths helpfully.
Ben Britton, Isle of Wight, England
Enough is enough.
J Seymour, London, England
I agree that a mosque of this size seems a little excessive but what is all this out and out biggotry being spouted here!
The large majority of muslims in this country are honest, hard working people who do a lot to help our society and our economy.OK so there are certain factions who may plan terrorist attacks, how many years did we live with the threat of terrorist attacks from the IRA?And these were people who shared our religion.
How long will it take before we start goose stepping with our arm in the air? (Armstrong of Portsmouth sounds like they're nearly there already!)
Tom, York, England
Hear Hear Peter, Cambridge.
Why should they have freedoms in our country when we have none in theirs?
John B, Norwich, UK
There isn't much censoring on this site is there- blatent blasphemy is being typed here.
I think building a mosque is an excellent idea- you can't control who attends but you CAN control what you teach. There have been recent cases of young children being sexually abused by priests in the church- but that doesnt mean we should shut down all the churches.
As for the comment about building churches in Muslim countries- have a look at the ancient churches that still stand in Pakistan today. Also to note that Tariq Aziz, former minister in the Iraq govt was a devout Christian.
Mosques are never a blot- they are beautiful constructions- have a look at the mosques around the world- they have arguably the most beautiful architechture.
Sam, Manchester,
As much as I agree that this should not be built, some of the arguments put forward against it are truly pathetic - Armstrong's from Portsmouth is typical of the "my religion is OK but yours isn't" variety. All religions should be treated equally - that is NONE of them should receive any special treatment.
Mark Allen, Nottingham,
i signed a petition against this on th 10 Downing Strret site, and had a mail saying no planning permission had been received, or was expected. Ho hum - more untruths from the government.
Peggy W, Blyth, England
Quite simply I don't want this abomination built in my country. Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins and Great Britain until recently had grasped that reality.
Let us not slide into the dark ages again through allowing our land to be taken over by these incomers with their paedophile of a false prophet.
British people used to be free to speak out but now are fearful to, because many of these incomers do not grasp the basic concept of freedom of speech..unless it's for themselves.
Get back to church England!
Armstrong, Portsmouth,
Will the Muslims allow Christians to build large churches in their countries - or is it only the UK that is expected to tolerate other religious viewpoints?
Peter, Cambridge,
Over 47,500 people have signed a petition on the PM's site against this idea. Let's hope the next PM will listen.
Rob, Reading, UK
Read the history of Finsbury Park Mosque. Money from Saudi. Support from HRH Prince of Wales. Origin and links with dozens of terror attacks and thousands of Jihadi conversions. The Islamist Hall of Bloodsoaked Fame is riddled with graduates from Hamza's terror academy and we even contemplate this? Are we mad?
Brian Williamson, Stockport, Cheshire
I'm not a big fan of the Tablighi Jamaat, but this article is so full of prejudice and hate it's disgusting..This is the kind tripe you expect the Daily Mail to write...come on, try and write a balanced article for once without stating opinion as fact....
Z Patel, Leicester,
"One of Islams most secretive sects has begun a charm offensive to win support for plans to build Britains biggest place of worship".
Don't bother, the people of this country don't want another blot on the landscape, are these really necessary, changing the face of the UK beyond recognition? I want my country to look like mine, not someone else's.
Enough is enough please.
Samanths Jones, Bucks, England
It is hard to believe that any Muslim demand will not be met by the UK government, such is the track record of total appeasement of hard liners, funded by Islamic petro dollars. If it won't outlaw honour killings, it won't stop this massive power statement and seed bed for disseminating ultra fundamentalism. Muslims seeking a western version of Islam need to be protected from this organisation, this plan should never have been allowed into the public forum.
Ibn, Homerton, UK
