Read Faith Central on Cardinal Lustiger
Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger, the only Jewish-born bishop in France in modern times, died on Sunday, aged 80. He converted to Catholicism during the German occupation of France in the Second World War when he was 14. Having read the Bible in secret as a child he later said it felt as if he was "reading something he already knew". As a high-profile Jewish convert he faced opposition from Israel's Chief Rabbi who said he had betrayed his people and his religion, but he held firm to the belief that his conversion was not a rebellion but a fulfilment of his calling as a Jew. The Pope praised the Cardinal, who was Archbishop of Paris for 25 years, yesterday saying he was a "great figure" who spent his life trying to improve relations between Catholics and Jews.
On his conversion
“I was born Jewish and so I remain, even if that's unacceptable for many. For me, the vocation of Israel is bringing light to the goyim. That's my hope and I believe that Christianity is the means for achieving it.”
"I am not leaving you. I am not passing into the enemy camp. I'm becoming what I am. I am not stopping being a Jew -- just the opposite. I'm discovering a way of living it."
"I am a Cardinal, a Jew and the son of a immigrant”
On being appointed Archbishop of Paris
“For me, this nomination was as if all of a sudden the crucifix began to wear a yellow star.”
On the Holocaust
"The silence of Auschwitz-Birkenau's victims impels us to uphold and order the upholding of the dignity of each human being."
On Jewish and Christian relations
"It is impossible for a Christian to be a Christian ... without the Jewish people."
"What Christians believe, they got through the Jews.”
“Jews and Christians are the guardians of the revelation of the Only One God and of his design to bring all humans together one day.”
“Christianity is the fruit of Judaism."
On inter-religious dialogue
“All around the world, the intermixing of various populations now brings side by side very different religious faiths, and this leads to unprecedented confrontations.”
“This question is how to articulate the history and geography of our communities with the history and geography of modernity. Nowhere else perhaps than here in New York has a better answer been experienced.”
On love
“The strength of evil can only be answered with an even greater strength of love,”

Interesting how all the above comments are from Christians or from converted Jews. You would expect them to agree with Lustiger.
I cannot, however agree with him To convert from Judaism is to rat on 4,000 years of history. It is to say that the Jewish scriptures and Jewish traditions have no relevance. To claim that they are fulfilled by the Christian vision is as fallacious as the Muslim claim to have fulfilled both the Jewish and Christian visions. Deuteronomy tells all Jews that anyone who suggests that it is unnecessary to fulfil the commandments of the Torah is a false prophet.
Yet it would be churlish for me, as an Orthodox Rabbi, not to say that Cardinal Lustiger, despite never having realized properly what it means to be a Jew, did much good in his advancement of Jewish-Christian relationsh. What he only might have done had he chosen instead to be a Rabbi!

Very good, James Reesor. Well said with a minor adjustment: None of us are intelligent enough to "fully" explain God. To the extent we use our free will to love God with our whole heart in submission to His will, and to the extent our lives give glory to God, we do begin to comprehend God and experience His Love. As scripture says, the Lord will reveal Himself to those whom He wishes . . . mostly those who live as mere "children." Most important, as we are created in the image and likeness of God, each of us has the potential for perfection in Him. The Cardinal undoubtedly understood this and siezed the moment, his moment being 80 years. Through the sacramental life of the Catholic Church, and specifically, the Eucharist our lives are made "one" with Him Who is One with the Father and all they mysteries of life begin to unfold . . .and we can begin to explain them to others. This is true joy and the purpose of life. Praise God now and forever!

I think that this is such a wonderful life story. A true love story.
Cardinal Lustiger, has been truly blessed, and he blessed many others with his story. I to have come from Jewish-Catholic back ground, and do believe it is so wonderful, see God's first chosen people, following in the foot steps of their Lord. A true love story.

I am deeply moved by your article on Cardinal Lustiger, of whom I had heard, but knew little about. I will read more. I too am a converted Jew, or as I like to say, a Completed Jew. I have written a book called "Confessions of a Completed Jew" which I now liken to a cross between St. Augustine's "Confessions" (though far from its eloquence and brilliance) and Cardinal Lustiger's hopes for recognition by and reconciiation with the Jewish people (though far from his commitment as a priest of God). Thank you for your enlightening me and other like-minded lansmen.

Yes indeed, Christianity is the fruit of Judaism, more so it's fullfilment as biblical scholars will attest to in their interpretation of the New Testament.
If Christ was not the authentic Messiah, He would have dissapeared from the history of Christianity long ago.
Instead He has become much more controversial with the passage of time.
Was it not the great teacher of St. Paul, Gamaliel who counselled the members of the Sanhedrin to be careful what
they did to Paul and his companions, when they were brought before them, and advised them they might be fighting God Himself.

God is God; Humankind is only an inferior imitation of God.
None of us are intelligent enough to explain God -- and none of us are capable of rationalizing our own existence without first considering the mystery of God.
Whatever "label" we may attach to our own identities has little consequence if God is not accurately reflected by the images we project through words and deeds.
James Reesor, Nashville, Tennessee USA
