The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, presided at a “secret” Eucharist yesterday for lesbian and gay clergy in the Church of England.
At the service, in London, he gave a talk on “present realities and future possibilities for lesbians and gay men in the Church”. Conservative church members condemned the Archbishop, claiming that the service would make him the “focus of division”.
The venue, originally scheduled to be St Peter’s, Eaton Square, Belgravia, was changed to avoid media attention after news of the meeting emerged on the Church Society website this year. The meeting was organised by the Clergy Consultation, a support group for gay clergy, ordinands and Anglican monks and nuns. Secrecy was so tight that a list of names attending was sent to Lambeth Palace with orders that it be shredded as soon as Dr Williams had read it.
The consultation, which has between 250 and 450 members at any one time, was set up in 1976 by three Anglican priests, Malcolm Johnson, Peter Ellers and Douglas Rhymes. Many members are married and faithful to their partners. The organisation intends to help them to cope with staying faithful to what they regard as a Christian lifestyle while dealing with their sexuality.
A spokeswoman said: “The Archbishop of Canterbury is committed to the listening process which was agreed at the Lambeth Conference [in 1998] as part of the discussions on human sexuality. That means listening to and engaging with gay and lesbian clergy in a pastorally sensitive setting.”
Dr Williams was criticised by evangelicals, who believe that his actions will be interpreted as an endorsement of the Church’s liberal wing. The Rev David Phillips, general secretary of the Church Society, said: “This is not something that should be happening. There is serious doubt in our mind about some of the people present and their standing because of being in homosexual relationships. We came to the conclusion a long time ago that [Dr Williams] was not really fit to be Archbishop.”
In a joint statement Dr Richard Turnbull, chairman of the Church of England Evangelical Council, and Dr Philip Giddings, convener of the evangelical group Anglican Mainstream, said: “Every occasion for listening pastorally to people is to be welcomed. However, the Holy Communion is a fundamental symbol of fellowship and an expression of our unity in Christ.” To offer this to those in gay relationships was contrary to biblical teaching and to the teaching by the bishops themselves in their document Issues in Human Sexuality, they said.
No one from the Clergy Consultation was available for comment, but the Rev Martin Reynolds, spokesman for the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement, who was not at the meeting, said: “The Clergy Consultation has been of great assistance to many, many people over the years. Most gay clergy are married and have children. The consultation has given them great support and love in lives devoted to their families.”

By a happy accident, I found myself running a lunch club in the basement of a London church in 1976 and one of my first client groups was the newly-formed gay clergy group. Malcolm and Douglas and many other men (they were only male then!) - and subsequently women - became deeply loved friends and powerful influences on my understanding of sprituality . Though subsequently ordained, the experience of "christians", who echoed the ugly comments above and time and again failed to show anything approximately understanding, love or compassion for others , finally catapulted me into a world beyond organised religion - a place where I find glimpses of God every day.
Thanks guys
My head doesn't hurt nearly so much now that I'm not smacking it against a brick wall every single day!

The Archbishop of Canterbury was doing exactly what the Lambeth Bishops prescribed: He was engaging in the 'Listening Process'.
Unfortunately, his detractors, including certain Bishops of the Church of England, obviously had no intention on following through on this intention.
What does that say about their own integrity, and their willingness to engage in the ongoing dialogue with gay Christians in our Church?
Thank God for Rowan, I say!
Father Ron Smith, Christchurch, New Zealand
The next time the Archbishop of Canterbury considers conducting Christian worship in secret, let him first read the following scriptures:
Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret. (John 18:20)
"This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil" (John 3:19)
Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; 12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. (Ephesians 5:11-12)

In an attempt to discover what the Biblical teaching about Gay relationships actually was, I turned to the book of Leviticus. It states there, not that homosexual couples shall not be allowed to share Communion, but that they shall not be allowed to live - "Their blood be upon their own heads." The same penalty applies for adultery.
When I hear Messrs. Phillips, Turnbull and Giddings campaigning for Elton John, Prince Charles, etc, etc, etc, to be stoned to death, I shall believe that they are motivated by a sincere wish for the Biblical standards to be upheld. Until then, I shall have to conclude that they are merely using the Bible to support their own prejudices. How can they justify picking out some bits of the scripture - the condemnations - and ignoring others - the penalties? How do they decide what bits are really God's word and what bits aren't?

I sincerely hope that HRH Elizabeth II will call-in Dr. Williams and suggest that he retire and return to Wales to take up fly fishing.
Rev'd Richard M. Bruton, Biloxi, MS
After having been raised in the Episcopal Church all my life I have finally left. I am gay and feel as though the church can never reconcile itself to gay people. This is the right of the church, but I cannot accept that the church has no problem with virulently anti gay bishops from Nigeria. The church in Nigeria has worked with the government to further criminalize homosexual activity and now some Episcopal churches in the USA are aligning themselves with them.

Jesus defines sin as lack of love (Matthew 22:36-40). Fornication and adultery are unloving because each has a victim. What is unloving about a couple in a homosexual love relationships? Neither is victim, neither is unlove

The point is not in hating gays. I for one do not hate gays as a christian. But I can not at the same time celebrate what the Bible says is wrong. We are all sinners in need of Gods love and may he have compassion on us all.
David, Portland, USA / Oregon
I was always taught God resided within everyone and everything, it is a shame that the Church cannot accept feelings between members of the same sex - after all if God is truly within everyone, and God is in favour of love and happiness - then why would he be against people of the same sex being together? Ive always thought that God praises love, why can't the church do the same? All this dogma around God's word is ridiculous, it is exactly what is causing people to kill each other. A bit of love is exactly what this world needs.

shame! Dr william is not fit to be Archbishop.
Andrei , London,
How nice to see the comment ALL Christians, I assume that all means everyone even anyone who is different than me. I was taught that GOD loves us all. It now appears I was misinformed. Have we as people learnt nothing in the past 70 years? Fear & Hate enabled Hitler to carry out Genocide it supported the KKK in the USA, & now Hate of Gay people is destroying our religion and we are being painted with the same brush as bigots. We are told to âdo unto others as you would have done to yourselfâ and âlet he who is without sin cast the first stoneâ well I may not agree Gays, but I know Iâm no without sin, so I will welcome them within MY church as I know where 2 or 3 are gathered together so will god be. When did the Church of England become the church of hate & damnation?
Jim Duffie, Bournemouth, England
Ah, is that why ABC gave the BBC's Mr Piggott an interview on Newsnight last night?
As the ABC said of Gillian Gibbons, 'a minor faux pas'?
The eucharist is not for 'in groups', but for all Christians: such a service was a ghastly abuse of the core Christian act of worship. Should a taste for homoerotic sex unite a congregation around Christ?
