An imam’s daughter whose family threatened to kill her after she converted to Christianity at the age of 16 has told The Times that, because of her faith, she is not afraid to die.
But Hannah, now 32, has been forced to live under police protection for the past month since her brother told her that he could not be responsible for his actions if she did not return to Islam. Hannah, who hopes to marry a fellow Christian next year, uses a pseudonym and has moved house 45 times since her conversion.
She said: “Yes, there is a possibility I will be killed, just as there is for anyone that they can get run over by a bus. My faith means that I am not afraid to die. If I was to focus on that, I would spend my life at home, trapped. I am not going to let it stop me being who I am, from being a Christian.” She said that her freedom was made possible by living in Britain. “We are protected by the law in this country, which means I should be free to live the life God has called me to live.”
Hannah was speaking to The Times after the Right Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, the Bishop of Rochester, launched a new charity last week called Lapido Media, which aims to improve “religious literacy” about world affairs. Dr Nazir-Ali said that although the Koran did not specify the death penalty for apostasy, the four main Sunni and two Shia schools of Islamic thought agreed that this was an accurate interpretation of the hadith, or the oral tradition.
However, two of the world’s leading Islamic scholars suggested recently that the death penalty was intended to be carried out only in the next life.
Hannah, who was born in Britain but whose father is from Pakistan, said that she had a strict religious upbringing. She prayed five times a day and wore the full hijab from the age of ten.
Although she attended a Church of England primary school, 80 per cent of her fellow pupils were also Muslim. She learnt to read Arabic and had read the Koran by the age of 8. “I did not really know what was beyond that Pakistani community.” When she started secondary school she became more aware of the outside world – and when, aged 16, she overheard her father on the phone arranging her flight to Pakistan to marry a cousin whom she had never met she was shocked into action. “I went to college and did not go home,” she said. “I had nowhere to go. Everyone I knew was Muslim and knew my dad. I was on the street for about a week.” She slept in bus shelters until her religious education teacher offered her a bed. Against the teacher’s wishes, she started going to church.
“I watched everyone and saw how they lived their lives. I heard about God’s love, about how Jesus died on the cross. I was totally blown away by it. I asked someone how I could get to know Jesus. They said, ‘Ask him to come into your life. Ask for forgiveness’. So I did and that night I became a Christian.”
Hannah was still in contact with her family but they did not take her conversion seriously. Three years later she was baptised and invited them to the ceremony. They told her she was bringing shame upon them and the death threats began. At one point, 14 men with stones and knives came to her door and shouted at her to come out. When the threats became more serious a month ago, she went to the police. She said: “I pray that one day there will be a reconciliation with my family. But I have no regrets, not one.”

I am a Christian and I faced persecution from my family for my conversion. They were not Muslims but liberal humanists. It was very hard for me, but I know that Jesus is the Living Son of God and I trust Him

God bless you Hannah! God's grace and love will keep you in all difficult times. Our times are in His hands. I will pray for you and your family, that they will not only be reconciled to you but more so to God Himself through Jesus Christ.

God personally wrote the 10 commandments and gave it to Moses for mankind to obey: "Thou shalt not kill." The opposite is true: Love one another. God forbids people to kill themselves or to kill others. Anyone who teaches contrary to God's 6th commandment is a Liar. God says in Revelation 21:8 "But the...unbelieving,...murderers...all liars, shall have their part in the lake..burneth with fire...which is the second death." Life and Death is in God's hands, not man. Parents duty: love your sacred child from God. We die and answer to God alone; everyone is born free to love and believe in a democratic world. Ironically, 2000 years ago, a man was killed because he called himself God; after 3 days, this man Jesus rose from the dead and showed himself alive for 40 days to his disciples and they saw Jesus lifted up to heaven. This good news and happiness of Jesus' divinity, resurrection and life is true and recorded in King James Bible. Thank God: King James translated this Bible.

Hannah, we will pray that the Saviour who saved you, will guard and keep you each day, until that Glorious day when you will see Him face to face. Keep looking to Him for daily strength.

To convert from Islam to Christainity IS NOT apostasy! The apostasy was meant for those who returned to Idol worshipping, which even so has no penalty in the Quran.
The both sides of the extreme making claims from islamic laws forget that many were medieval & man made. For the person who wrote to look at the entirety of Islamic law & history, obviously doesn't know anything about christian laws or history, which would fare worse in any objective comparison. There is so much ignorance at display here not only from muslims who obey clerics blindedly, but also from their critics who lack any genuine understanding of history yet talk about it. There is so much for the muslim community to do in order to distinct itself from the idiocy within.

This is why the reported number of Muslims in the world is incorrect.
If Muslims were free to choose without the suppression of state or social laws there'd be a lot less of the 'em.
As it is, in some Islamic states (most?) you are fined, jailed, whipped or even murdered if you digress.
If people believe in an all powerful God then they shouldn't be afraid of the individual's right to choose.
Mick, Sydney,
Javaid, the Koran may say that there is no compulsion to religion, but the article itself states that "the four main Sunni and two Shia schools of Islamic thought" accept death as the penalty for apostasy. In Islam, the Koran is not the only source of law and theology - the traditions/sayings of Muhammad (Sunna) are too. They provide the detailed laws of Islam. You can't even easily say that the Koran completely overrides Sunna in this case, because obviously the majority of Islamic scholars think that they are compatible.
I don't even think the solution proposed, that the death is meant for the afterlife, removes the root of the problem. For why would a loving God, either before death or after death, order the killing of someone who, in good conscience, using her God-given reason, choses to change her religion?
What is happening to Hannah is highly reprehensible and unfortunately there is no easy way to brush it aside if you look at the entirety of Islamic law and history.

I just hope Jesus will lok after her. Seems she has to do an awful lot to find him, the least he could do would be to prevent these guys harming her,
But, of course! God works in mysterious ways..... I'll not bother thinking for myself then, just go try to justify her imminent death in the Bible somewhere.

There may be parents claiming to be Christians who are as wicked as the parents of this woman but they would be condemned unequivocally by the Christian community at large and non-religious people would not hesitate to berate them. They would find no sanctuary among Christians or other Westerners. The problems for courageous young women like Hannah aren't the fanatical reactions of people like her father but the weasel worded apologists for the fantics like Javaid of Berkshire who protect the criminals. It is imperative that we cease our insistence that the majority of Moslems are peace loving, law abiding people until they come out and condemn unequivocally the actions and attitudes of the fanatics who are motivated by religion to behave in unspeakably criminal ways.
Tam Earl-Aine, Cheltenham,
It is important to differentiate between the actions of an individual with those that are carried out in accordance with a religion.
This story seems to have mixed the two together giving an impression that the actions that were carried out were done in the name of religion.
In the Quran, Chapter2, Verse 257, it states âThere is no compulsion in religionâ.
Having read his story, it seems to me that the Hannah was brought up in a religious and cultural environment, and one which promoted the furtherance of seeking Gods blessings.
Her parents originated from Pakistan and although they lived in the UK they wanted to maintain their heritage, their families cultural values and identity. Hanna found some parts of these values difficult to comprehend and appreciate as she reached maturity, especially whilst growing up in a country which found some of these values alien to them.
The inability for Hanna to comprehend may have been caused by a number factors, including the parents approach to her upbringing and awareness. Ultimately, circumstances led Hanna to leave home and distance herself from her family, as they were forcing her on a route which she had no intention of following, and that route ultimately led to a forced marriage, at a young age.
This story is common, and is not bound to any one particular religion, country, community, race or culture, and should not be masked to be anything specifically with Islam.
Islam is quite clear ⦠âThere is no compulsion in religionâ.

Whether you are afraid or not is not the point, sweety.
The point is, these vile and primitive people have to be challenged, named and shamed, deported, and imprisoned. Threatening to murder people is against the law in this civilised country.
Joe, Manchester,
It was not that you converted to be a Christian but that the Sovereign God drew you into His fold by His pure Grace, Mercy and His Love for you. For whom He called He also Predestinated to be conformed to the Image of His Son The Lord Jesus Christ. He has engineered Circumstances to this end in His love for you. So Work out your own Salvation with fear and trembling ,thats your responsibilty. For He who started a Good work in you will perform it untill the day of his appearing. I stand by you in prayer before the Throne of Grace Hannah, for you will be woman of travail as Hannah of old. God bless and keep you dear.

How can this possibly happen in the UK today ? there would be war on our streets if the shoe was on the other foot amidst police prosecutions and outrage being levelled by the pc brigade and the civil liberties unions, isnt it about time we fought fire with fire ?

I hope the police were quick to arrest the poor girls relatives and deal with them in the harshest possible way .Or will they have to wait until she is murdered before they can act ? Can there be a clearer example of religious intolerance and hatred ?
Benzo, Nr Chelmsford,
It is the hatred of Jesus (and therefore God) that in this case has led to problems Ron. Religion is often used as an excuse for violence - just as there are hundreds of other excuses for violence, including drug dealing and war. It does not mean that you should turn away from God.
Jo, Herts,
I hope Islam can evolve so that Muslims are able to accept that some people don't agree with their faith, just as there are people who accept Isam and dont agree with Christianity.
I am hoping that British Muslims will speak out and show their disapproval at this unacceptable restriction of freedom in a non Muslim country like England.
If they want Isam to be respected as a peaceful religion then staying silent on this issue is not going to win them any friends. They did a great job in speaking out against the teddy incident. Its now time to speak up again.
Tony, woking, England
If any government in Britain had ever had any backbone, which was diminished at the end of WW2, it would have insisted that all immigrants wishing to settle in Britain would sign a document stating that they agreed to obey the laws of the United Kingdom.
Whether an immigrant was a devout follower of the Oko Poko religion or not, if they did not agree not to carry out murder on members of their families, or any members of other families who wished to change their religious beliefs, they would have been refused entry to Britain, which is supposed to be a civilised country .
Phil de Buquet, Newport, England
Wonderful to know that Jesus has set this woman free to serve and to love him. Christianity is the only way to God, because He came into the world to save sinners, hope many will realize this at this Christmas time.

Am I to understand that the police only became involved after the situation became *more serious* than "14 men with stones and knives com[ing] to her door and shout[ing] at her to come out"?
Bob, Reading,
Isn't religion wonderful? What else, besides drug dealing and war, could you get into that has so much hate and violence attached to it?
ron, toronto,
Excellent.
DB, Someplace,
What a shame. This treatment of people who wish to change their faith just should not be allowed to happen, here or in another country.
Respecting a faith has to include respecting everyones choice of how to find God.
