A RETRIEVER is in training to become the first dog in Britain to be permitted to enter a mosque, acting as a guide for its blind Muslim owner.
The animal has been chosen because it salivates less than usual, thus reducing the risk of flicking spittle onto other worshippers at the Al Falah mosque in Leicester.
Keeping pet dogs is considered “haram” (the Arabic word for “forbidden”) in Islamic teaching, because they are regarded as unclean, particularly their saliva.
The mosque took its decision after advice from imams and scholars at the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), who carried out a full review of Islamic teaching on dogs.
The animal is now being trained by the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association to curb its natural friendly instinct to jump up and lick people. Any worshipper who touched the dog’s nose, or whose clothes were touched by saliva, would have to wash straightaway.
The retriever is being taught to sit in a purpose-built kennel outside the prayer hall of the mosque and wait for its owner, Mahomed Khatri, 17, to come out after worship.
Khatri is being trained to handle the dog, which will enable him to worship more often at the Al Falah. He is expected to pay his first visit with the dog early next year.
This initiative in Leicester may lead to an easing of the anticanine stance taken by mosques in Britain. Few Muslims keep dogs as pets.
Ibrahim Mogra, a senior imam at the MCB, who has overseen the review of teaching on guide dogs, said they could be justified as they served an “urgent practical purpose”.
He said: “We found the Koran allows Muslims to use dogs for hunting. So if Muslims can eat a prey bitten by dogs, then there should not be a problem using them to guide you if you are blind.”
Khatri, an A-level student at Loughborough further education college, lost his sight in 2005 because of detached retinas. He is also a member of the national blind cricket team.
Khatri said that, like many other Muslims, he did not like dogs, but was now quite excited about owning one.
He added: “Having a guide dog will give me complete independence to go anywhere.
Now I only go around with friends, or just stay in.”
The MCB reexamined the rules on dogs after incidents in which Muslim restaurant owners and taxi drivers refused customers with guide dogs. In June Sallahaddin Abdullah was fined £200 in Cambridge after he refused to allow a blind couple into his taxi because they had a guide dog.
The MCB issued a ruling after saying British Muslims should allow guide dogs to enter restaurants and taxis.

Are muslims human beings? Here I was sure as a fatwa of death to apostasy they were the missing link...
Robert, Melbourne, Australia
Assistance dogs are necessary to their owner just as an inhaler may be necessary to an asthmatic therefore the dog must be allowed to accompany its handler at all times and should be allowed access to anywhere no one for whatever reason should disallow an assistance dog to accompany its disabled owner
s, wa,
Theological arguments aside, it is a shame that most of the comments here are more concerned for the welfare of the dog rather than the poor chap.
I guess that's what we've become as a society, so scathing in our criticism of Islam and Muslims that we even refuse to see them as human beings.
Abdul (sic) from NY being the personification of such standards, where rather than discuss the issue, he chose to insult someone I love dearly.
My fear is that the Jihadi's may have already won, for their aim of turning ordinary people against each other based solely on their religion and beliefs seems to be working. God help us all.
"ew" it is a bit presumptious to assume that the guide dog will not be loved. I have seen many muslims using guide dogs and both (man and dog) looked pretty comfortable, as much as the next blind person I should imagine.

Gald to see the MCB finally entering the 20th Century.
âWe found the Koran allows Muslims to use dogs for hunting. So if Muslims can eat a prey bitten by dogs, then there should not be a problem using them to guide you if you are blind.â
I'm sure he can find a justification of just about anything if only he looks hard enough at the Koran!
zeno, Glasgow,
I agree with EW from UK;s post above. A seeing-eye dog should not be paced into an enviroment where it will be seen as 'unclean' and despised. Will this dog be thrown outside immediately upon returning home with this teenager and how will his friends and family treat the dog. This is a very bad idea. A seeing-eye dog is a highly trained, very socialized dog and it would be a waste to let the training go down the drain due to neglect or abuse. I'm sure there are many other blind people who would love to have this dog and who would treat it as a member of their family.
Stephanie Anderson, Raleigh, NC USA
As an assistance dog handler myself, I worry that the dog is to be separated from the handler during the time at the mosque. Many have campaigned for public access for years, on equal terms, sadly, a kennel at the back of a mosque is not equal to the pew in a Church of England establishment for example.
However, there could be a positive side to this story for all assistance dog partnerships in the Uk if fellow Muslims see this story and advise their taxi driving contemporaries they are not at risk of dog saliva or anything else if they carry an assistance dog, which by law, they have to.
BA, London, England
Can´t we just accept this as a good sign? Muslims at Khatri´s mosque and Kathri himself will find out for themselves what the good characteristics of a (guide) dog are. Have you never been taught to believe something that was founded on something that others consider a stupidity? Let´s not blame Muslims, we all have such situations!
Kay, Luxembourg, Luxembourg
Is the dog's name Mohammed? In any case, I feel sorry for the dog. This is animal abuse! Where is PETA?
Abdul, ny,
He said he is excited about owning one. I do not think you should jump to the conclusion that the dog will be neglected. Then again everyone is different nowadays. I as a muslim want to wish everyone all the best for christmas and a happy new year.
Peace to all
P.S I love dogs, only if they don't bite me!
Hisham, Surrey,
Poor dog, to be owned and used by someone who hates dogs and whose culture regards them as unclean.
Will a dog so unloved be able to function as well as a dog that is a valued member of the family?
I'm not sure that the Association should be allocating a dog in these circumstances. It will be neglected and staved of affection.
