A motion calling for the disestablishment of the Church of England has been listed in the House of Commons as 666 - the Number of the Beast.
Labour MP John Austin, who has repeatedly tabled Early Day Motions urging disestablishment, put down his latest motion last night as MPs debated scrapping Britain's blasphemy laws.
It appeared appeared on the House of Commons order paper numbered 666, the number associated with the Antichrist in the Book of Revelation. Scholars believe 666 referred to the Emperor Nero.
The King James Bible renders Revelation 13:8 as: "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
Bob Russell, Liberal Democrat MP for Colchester and one of the signatories, said: “It is is incredible that a motion like this should have, by chance, acquired this significant number.
“This number is supposed to be the mark of the Devil. It looks as though God or the Devil have been moving in mysterious ways.
“What is even stranger is that this motion was tabled last night when MPs were debating blasphemy.”
The motion is unlikely to be debated. But momentum for looser ties between Church and State is growing, as the support for the repeal of the blasphemy law illustrates. The blasphemy law favours Christianity and in particular the Church of England.
Although the attempt by Liberal Democrat MP Evan Harris to amend the Criminal Justice Bill was unsuccessful, the Prime Minister Gordon Brown has disclosed that he is consulting with the churches about its repeal.

It is still remarkable this bill should have this number. And I hope the MP's have enough common sense to take it as a warning.
Adam, Lowestoft,
As a committed Christian I rejoice at the news that the State & Church wil separate. There is nothing much I see in Government or Royalty that aligns itself with Christian teaching & the principle of The Church being wedded to it in some way is surely bizzare & foolish.

How do the blasphemy laws favour Christianity? I thought the incitement to racial hatred legislation a year or two back was designed to put other religions on an equal legal footing with Christianity.
I would support people's rights to insult anyone they want to, from any religion or background.

Why does the times consider it obligatory to quote from the King James version of the bible... I can't think of the last time I was in a church which read from the KJV - why not pick a modern translation instead?

The New Testament (Revelation) was written in Greek not Hebrew!

Michael in Melborne - Notice that if you look closer at the image, they are actually celebration banners in the background, celebrating 60 years of the UN. Although you gotta love the irony behind the image.

666 is a mistranslation. 616 is the "number of the beast". Christians are the single least educated sect regarding their own religion, it's embarasing
Jay, Brisbane, Australia
Actually, theological scholars (as opposed to laymen who read the Bible) know that the number is either 666 or 616 depending on when the version you are reading, was written.
666 (or 616) refers to Neron Kesar (the Emperor Nero) not some mythical end-times anti-christ figure.
(Or rather "nrwn qsr" since Hebrew has no letters to represent vowels)
John, Dublin,
Well alan, cologne If you were intelligent you would have the wisdom to know that there is much more to 666 than Revelation so before you rubbish anything, and if you are not too afraid, perhaps you should have the good grace to study All that scripture has to say on the subject. Especially as the Bible is, and has been since first printed the worlds yearly No.1 best seller- Aren't you missing something?

Go to goole and click on "images" then enter the keywords in the searchengine "september 2005 quartet meeting" (without quotes), and you will see a picture of a U.N. meeting with a 666 in the background

The number 666 is 6 squared and triangulated, and means the full development of the sixth day of creation when "man" (male and female) was created...

Revelation 13.8 in the King James Bible actually says "And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are noty written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world."
The correct refrence is actually Revelation 13.18. Revelation 13.8 is referring to the fact that all those whose names have not been written in the book of life (which occurs when a person puts their faith in Jesus Christ as their Saviour) will worship the beast, wittingly or unwittingly. Further talk of such people can be found in Revelation 20.15, so trust Christ today.
