On the eve of the election of a new so-called "Black Pope", Jesuits in London have warned against the demonisation of Muslims.
In an online journal launched this evening by the British arm of the Society of Jesus, a leading Jesuit scholar says: "Let us not be misled into thinking either that Muslim-Christian conflict is the world’s greatest conflict, or even that war is the most serious threat to the human future."
Father Dan Madigan SJ, founder of the Institute for the Study of Religions at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome and member of the Vatican's Commission for Religious Relations with Muslims, says history shows that Islam is by no means the greatest threat to mankind.
Writing for www.thinkingfaith.org, Father Madigan says: "The greatest shame of the last century was the killing of millions of Jews by Christians conditioned by their own long tradition of anti-Semitism and seduced by a virulently nationalist and racist new ideology.
"The last 15 years in Africa have seen millions of Christians slaughtered in horrendous civil wars by their fellow believers. A Catholic missionary is dozens of times more likely to be killed in largely Catholic Latin America than anywhere in the Muslim world."
Jesuits meeting in Rome are tomorrow expected to elect a new Superior General to lead the 19,000 members worldwide and to succeed Father Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, 79, from Holland.
Father Madigan's warning came as the lesbian Muslim author Irshad Manji prepared to fly into London tomorrow to launch her new film, Faith Without Fear.
Ms Manji, Senior Fellow with the European Foundation for Democracy, based in Brussels, said she had received dozens of death threats since she began promoting her gospel of "ijtihad" or Muslim reform. Speaking to The Times, she continued: "These days I am getting more threats from Europe than I am from the Islamic world. This goes to show the degree to which Islamic radicalisation is permitted, particularly in western Europe."

You can't write an article like this without proof or figures.
So a Christian missionary is more likely to be killed in Latin America than the muslim world. Surely it's down to numbers.
So out of 100 in the Muslim world 2 are killed ?
But in the LM out of 200 3 are killed.

Diane Clouston, keep dreaming of the concept of no consequences to your actions. Dont just think of the bad things relgions have produced. Think of the Grace of God, from which you have the Salvation Army, (from which countless of lives have been saved and helped), The Red Cross, hospices, hospitals, orphanages and the list goes on and on. Expand your small mind as you try to grasp the concept of the enormity and the love of God. Religion l agree is bad but to know the true and Living God is another complete different thing altogether. Just imagine if everyone had your belief, that there is no god, no judgement, no consequences, no afterlife, no promises, there is no hope. This type of mentality is very dangerous, far more dangerous than religion. Why should anyone give to charity, compassion or anything for that matter. lt is a dog eat dog mentality and that is why this world is a sad, dark place to ive in. We need the Light of Jesus to shine and His Ways to follow.

They are probably less likely to die because Christain missionaries have to work secretly in Muslim countries if they are to operate at all.
Melanie, Melbourne,
Actually, I would imagine that the threats that Manji is getting predominantly from Europe probably has more to do with the fact that Muslims in other countries a) don't know about what she's doing, as places such as Afghanistan aren't exactly flooded with Western news, and b) can't afford to send death threats from, say, Pakistan.

I look forward to the time - sadly long after my lifetime - when it will be recognised that there is no god and no afterlife, so that religion will be removed as an unnecessary cause of strife and consequent misery and destruction. The combination of religious extremism, nuclear weapons and suicide bomber mentality is our greatest danger.
Dane Clouston, Oxford, UK
The fact that Christian missionaries are far more likely to be killed in Latin America than the Muslim world is real eye opener.
