Pope Benedict XVI today said the media were too often used irresponsibly to spread "violence and vulgarity" and impose "distorted models" of social and family life. He urged the world's communicators instead to adopt what he called "info-ethics".
In a message for the Roman Catholic Church's World Communications Day, Pope Benedict said the media often sought to create reality rather than report it, with agendas dictated by "the dominant interests" of the day. "This is what happens when communication is used for ideological purposes or for the aggressive advertising of consumer products. When communication loses its ethical underpinning and eludes society's control, it ends up no longer taking into account the centrality and inviolable dignity of the human person" he said.
He added "For this reason it is essential that social communications should assiduously defend the person and fully respect human dignity. Many people now think there is a need, in this sphere, for 'info-ethics', just as we have bioethics in the field of medicine and in scientific research linked to life." He said the media "in order to attract listeners and increase the size of audiences, do not hesitate at times to have recourse to vulgarity and violence and overstep the mark".
He praised new media such as the internet, which were "changing the very face of communications", but said they were often misused. A new "info-ethics" would help to prevent the media from becoming "spokesmen for economic materialism and ethical relativism, the true scourges of our time", and from being "exploited for indiscriminate self-promotion or ending up in the hands of those who use them to manipulate consciences".
He concluded that "Man thirsts for truth, he seeks truth; this fact is illustrated by the attention and the success achieved by so many publications, programmes or quality fiction in which the truth, beauty and greatness of the person, including the religious dimension of the person, are acknowledged and favourably presented. Jesus said: 'You will know the truth and the truth will make you free' (John 8:32). The truth which makes us free is Christ, because only he can respond fully to the thirst for life and love that is present in the human heart".

Evil Exists, and it does so everywhere . It permeates every part of our lives, and culture. The fact here is in defense of the One True Religion, is that Jesus Christ is the founder of His Church, Jesus chose Peter as the first Pope. But now as for our True Church and Our True priests they are correct and the Pope is correct in his statement about the media promoting distorded moral views. Our children , the innocent suffer because of this, However, we to whom much is given, can fight back by promoting truth in our lives and in our actions. A most powerful way this is being done now is through Christian Music, (and as one Christian artist , Monica Ursino put it, " the language of the youth is Music")Because the youth are so easily influenced, we need more artists to lead the way in saving our youth from going down the road of Perdition. Please visit Catholic sites/and tune into some real spirational music of Fr. Stan, Sal Solo and www.monicaursino.com.

What people need to understand is that the media drives it's profits from the consumers watching and listening it's programming. The only way to do this is to change everyone's mind about brands, celebrity gossip, and all the programming television has to offer. It's highly unlikely that people are not going to watch the next episode Nip/Tuck because of moral values. People use the media as they choose to use and will fight for that freedom. The Pope has no doubt a very valid point but it's going to be unlikely to change everyone's ethics.

I feel the Pope is 100 percent right........May God Bless each and everyone of you and open up everyone's ears..start listening......start praying more.......pay attention to what your children are watching on T.V.
THERESA, Staten Island, New York
Bravo, Pope Benedict! God bless you. Keep speaking the truth.
Diane McManus, Cordova,
God Bless Pope Benedict XVI!!! i can't even sit down with my children to watch a "family movie" on TV without companies using commercials to sell their products by using sex. i am over it, something has to be done. and people wonder why the world is the way it is. Geesh People get a clue, and quit shoving your pro-choice, pro homosexually down me and my families throat!
suzy , Indianapolis, USA/indiana
It makes me laugh when the Pope gets on his high horse about morals. Where were the Church's morals during the Spanish Inquisition? Where were their morals during World War 2 when they (at the behest of the Pope) collaborated with the Axis powers? Where were their morals during the countless revelations of widespread paedophillia and child abuse amongst Catholic clergy? The Catholic Church is undoubtedly one of, if not THE, world leaders in creating human misery and suffering and he wants to preach to us about morals?

You know the old adage, "If it bleeds, it leads". If readers didn't buy more papers or watch more news when such stories were featured, this insatiable blood lust of the media would have been stemmed long ago.
There is also a clear bias toward sexual license in the media, and if we would only give our business to the media who do not reject Judeo-Christian morality we could have a say in what is produced. That's why I get my news from the Internet, it's the best place to choose decent sources of information.

The media does have an agenda. They present the prochoice and prohomosexual view point in an effort to sway readers to embrace their ideas.
David Shaw (who is prochoice) wrote a series of articles in the LA Times in July of 1990 on the bias of the media in reporting the abortion issue, for example.
Also, prohomosexual TV show's producer admitted to trying to sway people to that view point.
What is needed, is a turning to Christ, who is the Way, the Truth and the Light. We must preach the Gospel as Jesus commanded.

What sanctimonious rubbish! Perhaps the Pope wants the media to be gagged so that it will not report on issues such as the misdemeanours of priests and the millions dying of AIDS in Africa because the Pope says they cannot use contraception. Let's sweep all that under the carpet, shall we?
Martin, Burnley, UK
Like all totalitarians, the Pope is constantly criticising "the media" for not doing what he wants it to do. But if the Vatican continues to behave like a political ideology rather than a church, then it must expect criticism. And the media must be left free from all pressure to report in ways that vested interestsd want it to report.
We may not like what we read, but nobody is forcing you to buy a newspaper or watch the television news.
In this instance - as in so many others - the infallible Pope is completely wrong.
Martin Henderson, London, UK
Yes, long live Pope Benedict XVI. His message is very timely, especially with the increasing, emboldened attacks against Christianity, and even more reprehensibly, against the very person of Jesus Christ. The media should be used to bring us closer to God. I wish "The Passion of the Christ" would play again in theaters this Lent. What an awesome experience that was.
Mary Reich, Northridge, CA
The media have done great harm with their continualdown grading of the good and the aplauding of immorality and mahem. they should remember they too will be judged.

I agree with Alan, germany.
For once I too agree with the pope.
The media especially T.V have much to answer for.
Shootings, blood, violence, vampires, immorality, and foul language is what they think most of us enjoy. No wonder children grow up with no sense of respect, and a weired notion of what is right.
I would like to see other Church leaders follow his example,
Mrs Margaret Elward, Bridgend, Glam
Long live Pope Benedict XVI. The ESPN Anchorwoman, Jacobsen, who blashemed with the use of Jesus' name immeditaely comes to mind as an example of the need for a new "info-ethics." The "managed news media" is losing credibility in many minds.
Andrew Cole, Burlington, Kentucky
I'm not sure quite what the Pope is referring to when he attacks the media. But if he is referring to the unspeakable diet of murder, crime and violence that we are presented with every day, then for once - just for once - I agree with him.
What is it that makes the media wish to pay so much attention to killing and hurting? Do they think we're all sadistic voyeurs?
Maybe I'm a softie, but I simply cannot look at about seventy percent of television.
