Terrorism has been declared un-Islamic by scholars at a Wahabi madrassa, which some believe inspired the Taleban, according to a senior cleric.
In a declaration, as many as 20,000 leaders representing different sects of Islam also called on the Indian Government to ensure that Muslims were not harassed in the name of terrorism, Maulana Shaukat said. He was speaking from the 150-year-old Darul Uloom Deoband madrassa at Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, northern India.
The declaration said: “Islam is a religion of mercy for all humanity. Islam sternly condemns all kinds of oppression, violence and terrorism.”
Adil Siddiqui, another Deobandi representative, noted that “whenever there is any incident of terrorism, every possible attempt is made to link it to Muslims, particularly who have studied in madrassas. This is totally wrong.”

I hate to be the cynic, but did the Deobandi statement define what is meant by "terrorism" within the context of its condemnation?

Hi, Jack R, Lancaster
Did you know that you (or anyone) can find an image of the devil if you carefully stare at the clouds (on a clear day) using your imagination, thinking creatively to specifically look for the shape. (That doesn't mean you've seen the devil)
In a similar way, if you really really want to, you can look for and find different messages/meanings in every Religious scriptures/books.
Look at the bright colourful sky (big picture) and devil in not in the details (clouds)

Islamic violent jihadists are inspired by the words of the Koran. 'The notion of Islam as 'a religionof peace' is demonstrably untrue propaganda, as any study of history shows.
Jack R, Lancaster, England
This is a historic development. It shows that the Muslim community and especially their clerics have acknowledged that their religion and their scriptures are used in a blatantly wrong manner by the terrorists. This message from the conference should be publicised universally by the Indian Govt, by world media and by moderate Muslims. The terrorists and their hate propoganda can, thus, be successfully countered.
Vijay, Mumbai, India
Why such a short article hidden away in the 'faith' column? Shouldn't this be front page news?
Well, at least it has been printed here, which shows, nearly, fair and balanced reporting by the Times. Thank you!
Anyone who has studied Islam should already know that "terrorism" is totally unIslamic and is strictly forbidden.
