Tony Blair is to add to his growing jobs portfolio by lecturing on faith at Yale. The American university said yesterday that he was to become a Howland Distinguished Fellow.
The work will be part-time and will not affect Mr Blair’s work as a Middle East envoy or his City posts, his office said last night.
The former Prime Minister is to lead a seminar at Yale and participate in a number of events at the campus. His efforts at Yale relate to the work of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, which he will launch this year.
The Howland Distinguished Fellowship was created in 1915 for any “citizen of any country in recognition of some achievement of marked distinction in the field of literature or fine arts or the science of government”.
Richard Levin, the Yale President, said: “The appointment of Mr Blair provides a tremendous opportunity for our students and our community. As the world continues to become increasingly interdependent, it is essential that we explore how religious values can be channelled toward reconciliation rather than polarisation. Mr Blair has demonstrated outstanding leadership in these areas and is especially qualified to bring his perspective to bear. We are honoured that he is planning to join the Yale community.”
The foundation will promote understanding between the main faiths and increase understanding of the role of faith in the modern world.
Since leaving Downing Street in June, the former Prime Minister has accepted offers of work at two leading financial companies and last month agreed to help Rwanda to attract private investment.
His work with Rwanda is unpaid but he is expected to earn more than £2 million a year from other positions.
Mr Blair took up a part-time post with the American investment bank JPMorgan this year, and was later appointed to advise the Swiss insurer Zurich on “developments and trends in the international political environment”, including climate change. Both appointments came in addition to a reported £5 million deal for his Downing Street memoirs. Mr Blair has also been spending much of his time working as an unpaid envoy for the Quartet of Middle East peace negotiators.
JPMorgan said that he had been employed “in a senior advisory capacity”, adding that he had a “unique perspective”.
Although it is not known how much he earns from his work for JPMorgan, some estimates have suggested that he will be paid more than $1 million (£500,000) a year.
The bank said that Mr Blair had been employed to advise its chief executive and senior management team, “drawing on his immense international experience to provide the firm with strategic advice and insight on global political issues and emerging trends”.
A Zurich spokeswoman said that Mr Blair would be working for the group on an ad hoc basis.
At the time of his appointment to the post at Zurich, Mr Blair said: “There is a consensus now that the challenge of climate change is real, and what we need now are the policy solutions to turn that concern into action.
“That’s why Zurich’s work to look at how business, and in particular the insurance sector, can play its part is so crucial, and why I welcome the chance to help them with it.”

Dear Mr. Blair, respect to your courageous decision and good luck!
Arn`t all of us involved in an universal co- evolution, excluding nothing and nobody, including the galaxies and the "atom", even "god" and myself...Couldn`t there be a fruitful collaboation with Hans Küng concerning worldwide ethos...

A possible suggestion for Tony Blair in his inaugural speech at Yale.
" Today, my fellow countrymen, I would like us to meditate on Matthew 13 and particularly two observations by Jesus, "Blessed are the meek" and "Blessed are the peacemakers". They are two of the most relevant observations to our modern age and deserve to be taken seriously, bearing in mind the modern context of democratisation of the Middle East and the opening up of valuable underground resources from that region to the necessary disciplines of free trade and capitalism.
The Christian way is not easy; a great wrestling of conscience must be suffered before important decisions concerning the fate of citizens ruled by non-Christian regimes are finally made. The fate of thousands of citizens must be weighed up against the obvious benefits to many others that such a decision may yield. This is the context in which Jesus' observations must be seen, important as they are .......'
Need I go on?
Bob Ericson, Tewkesbury, Glos,
Why do institutions like this encourage this man ? There is no escape from his spin - still !!!
Blair started a total mess in the Middle East and as a simple Christian, which I am, I feel he has alot to answer for and should not be the one lecturing anybody on religion. He is the last person to do that !!!
Ian Payne, WALSALL,
I live very near to New Haven, Connecticut and am happy to welcome Tony Blair to our community. Lecturing on how religion can help reconciliation is a wonderful thing.
Good luck with the Yalies and make sure you grab a bite of great Italian food on Wooster Street!
Kevin Katske, Trumbull, Connecticut
Well, let's hope he's not going to lecture them on the virtues of honesty too!!!
What a joke...the world really is going mad!

When did this political oppotunist and lawyer become qualified as a theologian?
Robert, Hull,
Any promotion of faith for good is wonderful and fulfilling. I'm not sure that Tony Blair is the man to promote faith. 650,000 people are dead because they done nothing wrong. The leaders of Iraq are made pillars of society.
God bless the innocent.
Richard Irwin, London, UK
Poor students!
When a hypocrite has got a chance to give lectures at one of the Americans best Universities one can only conclude that something is wrong with USA!
Our Americans friends, please keep Blair in your country until his last breath. Now you have got a chance to finally do something good for humankind.

I do not believe that Fprmer Prime Ministers or Ex politions from high office should be allowed toi make millions for giving information to businesses that will based on their 'insider knowledge'.
This is a violation and it can easily be presumed that dedcisions made at the end of their term in office could be leading to a high positioned job with an insurance firm or University .
It seems like money for the old boys network.
George Scicluna, Geraldton, Western Australia
Will he tell them about his enthusiasm for abortions, stem cell research, 24 hour drinking, Casino's and the rise in child poverty during his tenure? I don't think so.
Bob Pratt, Almeria, Spain
What a lovely, peaceful vocation Blair`s found in promoting faith for reconciliation through teaching. Do you think his son is giving him any teaching hints ? I wish him every success.
