AN Anglican priest has been beaten up and insulted in what appears to be a “faith hate” assault by Asian youths.
Police are looking for three men after the attack in east London in which Canon Michael Ainsworth, 57, rector of St George-in-the-East, Shadwell, was attacked in his own churchyard after approaching the youths, who were behaving rowdily.
Two of the three attacked him, inflicting cuts, bruises and two black eyes. The assailants are also alleged to have insulted the cleric for his occupation.
“The suspects are Asian... and the incident is being investigated as an alleged faith hate crime,” said a police spokesman.
Under a new law introduced last year, it is an offence to stir up hatred against someone on grounds of their religion.
A parishioner raised the alarm after the attack on March 5, but the youths had fled by the time police arrived.
“There was blood everywhere,” a parishioner told the East London Advertiser. “All the church members are in shock over what happened. Our canon is such a nice man who has done so much for the parish. It’s been very upsetting.”
Ainsworth was admitted to the nearby Royal London hospital after the attack, was released and returned a week later. He is still in hospital under observation.
Alan Green, area dean for Tower Hamlets and chair of the local inter-faith forum, said the church was working with the council and police to ensure the safety of its ministers and members of the public in areas such as churchyards.
“We take any assault against members of the clergy very seriously and have had excellent support from the local police on this matter,” he said.
He said officers were correct to handle any incident involving an element of abusive faith-related language as a faith hate crime, in order to protect people of all faiths.
The Metropolitan Police recorded an upsurge in attacks against Muslims after the July 2005 bombings in London. There are also numerous attacks against Jews but, according to police statistics, relatively few Christians are attacked because of their faith.

Please people - have we or have we not agreed that "multi-culturalism" is dangerous, threatening not only our safety on the streets, but the structure of our society?

i think everyone knows what sort of asians they are!!
andy, birkenhead,
I think it's fairly clear what type of Asians the report is referring to.
There has long been tension amongst different Muslim groups in Tower Hamlets; between the peaceful, faith driven on one side and the extreme militant, Islamic organisations that moved in, in an attempt to recruit 'young blood'.
It comes as no surprise to me that Asians in this area have attacked the Canon in this way with reference to his Christianity. To be honest, I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner.
I wish the Canon a speedy recovery.
david, london,
But what sort of "Asians" were they?
I'd guess it's the same sort who have carried out 'numerous attacks against Jews'.
Ray, Hebburn, Engand
This is absolutely terrible, but given the state of the country inevitable.
I take it as the witness said Asian, then they are looking for what most people in the UK would call Asian, i.e. dark skinned. This could even include Kurds.
But I to am concerned about the fairness of the law in this case. I have a sneaking suspicion that once caught (and these thugs will be caught) that due to the ethnicity and position of their victim and the abuse they allegedly used, they will be dealt with more harshly than your average common or garden white scumbag in this situation.
Also, we should hope and pray that this doesn't start a tit-for-tat campaign of abuse and attack due to faith, or indeed apparent race. As the last paragraph points out clearly, we already have enough of this kind of thing going on in this country.
I'm just glad that Canon Ainsworth is still alive. I do hope that it won't cause him to resign.

I hope the police and court apply the law fairly.
By Asians do you mean white Russian Asians from the Russian far east ? Chinese Asians ? Japanese Asians. Asians are not all the same.
