An Anglican priest is in hospital after he was beaten up and insulted in what appears to be a “faith hate” assault by Asian youths.
Canon Michael Ainsworth, 57, was kicked and punched in the head and left with deep cuts, bruising and two black eyes in the grounds of his historic church in east London after he asked three Asian youths there to be quiet.
The attack at the 18th-century St George in the East Church in Stepney follows a number of apparently anti-Christian attacks in recent months in the same area.
Alan Green, area dean for Tower Hamlets, said: “It was a nasty cowardly attack. There were several groups in the churchyard and two from one group attacked him and the other group came and helped him back to the house.
“He was kicked and punched in the head as he lay on the ground, I believe that what was shouted was ‘you f****** priest’ before they attacked him.”
A Metropolitan police spokesman said: “The suspects are Asian . . . and the incident is being investigated as an alleged faith hate crime.”
The church had previously been targeted when a brick smashed a window during a service. Allan Ramanoop, a member of the parochial church council, said: “On one occasion, youths shouted: ‘This should not be a church, this should be a mosque, you should not be here’.
“The youths are anti-Christian. It’s terrible what they have done to Canon Ainsworth. We’ve never had violence like that before.”
A parishioner raised the alarm after the attack on March 5, but the youths had fled by the time police arrived.
The church was consecrated in 1729 and designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, a pupil of Sir Christopher Wren. It was severely damaged during the blitz but rebuilt in the 1960s.
Ainsworth was discharged from hospital but has now gone back in. Yesterday, he was visited in St Bartholomew’s hospital by his wife Jan, who is also a priest as well as being the Church of England’s chief education officer.
She said her husband was concerned publicity about the attack could fuel inter-faith tensions. “He does not want the level of fuss and attention. I think he feels it’s quite difficult in the local area.”
The Met recorded an upsurge in attacks against Muslims after the July 2005 bombings in London. There are also numerous attacks against Jews but, according to police statistics, relatively few Christians are attacked because of their faith.

There are conflict between Anglian vs others. Hence it might happen because of faith. Alternatively, some drug addicted doing this for money. Only police can find out by asking to victim, when culprits are beaten him what shouted.

I think it might be the drugs, lack of anything to do , feeling unfranchised that was why they got up to no good.
Even if they were white and from a Christian background, i reckon the poor priest would still have got it.
Pretty sure Churches get arsoned, broken into etcetra into white working class areas

RE: Nabil,
You forgot #8- Western society paralyzed by "multiculturalism" and "political correctness" as foreign culture and people replace host.
Ken, Texas, USA
How can one deal with a situation where an ideologically strong religion displaces other more contemplative or liberal or secular ones ? I have not found any answers from history. In fact, there is reluctance by historians and politicians to candidly detail this replacement in different parts of the mid-east and southasia. Europe's experience may turn out to be similar. In which case, I hope there would be a better historical record of what happens.
Kris iyer, Chennai, India
In my opinion the problem is as follows:
1- Western societies abondoned religion
2- They live for their own pleasure outside the marriage bond
3- They refuse to give birth to children because they do not want to take extra burdens, besides the deterioration of matrimonial relationship.
4- A labour shortage occurs
5- The solution is to bring workers from other countries.
6- The newcomers have different beliefs and values and some of them are fanatic to their beliefs and do not accept the other's beliefs.
7- Faith-hate spreads .
Do you think I am right in this analysis?

If you think that atheism is the answer, then I would suggest you could look at the record of nations founded on atheism - the record of mass murder by Nazis and Communists in the 20th century.
It is the Christian ethos and devout Christians, that gave rise to separation of church and state, the abolition of slavery, emancipation of women, compassion to prisoners of war, the Red Cross, charities, to name just a few. It is the Christian ethos that gave rise to modern science and technology. It is not a coincidence that such developments took place only in Christendom and not elsewhere. Even the secular state is a Christian invention.
The last few decades have seen a huge shift of power towards the secular state, which has upset the balance that should be between the secular and the moral. The results of this unbalance are the social decay that is visible for all to see.

My ancestors were Englishmen and Englishwomen who came to America because they had COURAGE and PLUCK and STRENGTH. They saw the world clearly for what it was. That was the way in old England too, or so history might suggest. Today, England is full of pathetic weaklings. Take your Beatles back. We don't want any more of your hippie ethos of self-destruction. And, indeed, the English people are destroying themselves

The above has no bearing on religion until the justice system gets to the bottom of what really happened and why. People should therefore keep their cool before jumping to conclusions !!!

Mass imigration and multiculurism... the gift that just keeps on giving.
Carl McGuire, Leeds,
Please delete Asians from the heading, Asians describes many different people from many different nationalities with many different religions that is why they are trying to reclassify India as a subcontinent to sort it out. I don't like assuming but can we infer that they are Muslim Indians/Pakistani in a predominantly minority neighborhood hence Clergy Ramanoop? Please get the correct info or don't label it at all. Did you know mood altering drugs can bought easily like candy and everybody seems to be on them in those war torn are? The problem is that the drugs side effects include a delusion of being tortured and hence the unusual
terrorist backlash with no guilt or remorse. It is only the perverted that use religion advocating peace and brotherly love as an excuse to attack and kill. People should know that Muslims, Jews, Christians, and possibly other religions believe in the same CREATOR. No one should use religion as an excuse to kill or attack. "THOU SHALL NOT KILL"
Chris, New York, USA
ASIAN YOUTHS!!!! Don't you guys know that Asia starts from Turkey and ends in Japan?? Say it right, the attackers were MUSLIM YOUTHS.
Ben, Jackson, USA
This is a shocking and sickening attack. Sadly, I conclude that the assailants were probably motivated to act by religion, albeit in a warped form. Religious fanatics, regardless of their particular faith, must be dealt with robustly by the authorities.
Des, Edinburgh,
This is the problem with religion, while i feel sorry for michael ainsworth and wish him a speedy recovery religion does nothing but cause tension and create a divide between people, religion has caused war after war more people have been killed for having a faith in a god than anything else on this planet.
In my opinion religion was invented as guide-lines for a CIVIL society but people have twisted the text of what ever faith they follow for personal gain and now we only see the evil in all faith's.
Ban religion and give back free will this would stop the barriers between people all over the world and give peace and harmony not war and hate what we see now DUE TO RELIGION
jonbonbaldy, Sheffield, U.K
I hope that that justice system will be extremely harsh on those responsible. Our freedom of religion was something that was hard fought for and took centuries to finally achieve. We must not allow any faction or extremists to take that away.
