My time in Hizb ut-Tahrir

At the Institute of Ideas' panel debate on religion and radicalism, participants debated the famous Karl Marx pronouncement: Is religion still the opium of the masses?

Afterwards, the Times spoke to one of the panelists. Rashad Ali was once part of the leadership structure of Hizb ut-Tahrir, the radical Islamist organisation. He renounced this position and today is head of research and policy at the Quilliam Foundation, a counter extremist think tank. Here he tells us about his role in Hizb ut-Tahrir, their position on violence and why he eventually left.
