An Anglican bishop has resigned after weeks of speculation about his marriage and his relationship with his female chaplain, the Church in Wales announced this morning. The chaplain also resigned.
The two clerics, both of whose marriages have broken down, have consistently denied any inappropriate behaviour.
The Right Rev Carl Cooper, 47, who has three children with Joy, his wife of 25 years, had already been given leave of absence from his diocese.
His resignation will come as a blow to the Welsh province of the Anglican Communion. The wider Communion is already reeling close to schism amid controversies over gay bishops and women bishops. The Church in Wales’s governing body recently rejected moves to ordain women to the episcopate.
Bishop Cooper was one of just six diocesan bishops, and his loss as a Welsh speaker will be felt keenly in a province that struggles to find good clergy and bishops to serve its dwindling congregations. One of Wales’ most notable exports was the present Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams.
The resignation of an Anglican bishop in such circumstances is extremely rare.
In a statement today the Church in Wales said: “The Bishop of St Davids, the Right Rev Carl Cooper, has resigned. He has apologised for any of his actions that have caused offence and made it impossible for him to continue his ministry as Bishop of St Davids.
“The Archbishop and the Bench of Bishops of the Church in Wales have accepted the resignation as being in the best interests of the diocese and the Church in Wales at this time.”
Bishop Cooper came under pressure after some of his clergy demanded a tribunal be set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding the breakdown of his marriage.
His chaplain, the Rev Mandy Williams Potter, 38, said speculation about their relationship was false, while the Bishop and his wife described their split as “amicable” and said no-one else was involved on either side. Ms Williams Potter has also split with her husband Chris. The couple have two children.
Ms Williams Potter, who acts also as the diocesan communications officer, had earlier also been granted leave from her duties.
Bishop Cooper was born in Wigan and moved to Wales as an undergraduate. When he was enthroned at St David's in 2002, he was hailed as one of the province’s “new generation of clergymen

I am horrified at the response of Gethin Rhys to this : surely the most shocking aspect is that two families have been torn apart, that 5 children are most likely bewildered and heart broken, and that the lives of two ex sposes have been shattered?
IMorals are there to protect the vulnerable .

Carl did little or nothing for the diocese. He left many areas without priests and had lost touch with the people on the ground. His attention, it seems, was elsewhere. He was high handed and arrogant refusing to appoint locally ordained priest to serve the people. God wants His Church back!
Michael Arch, Pembroke, Pembrokeshire
Bishop Robinson came to terms with his sexuality, amicably separated from his wife, and then, some years later, met his partner, Mark. No 'affair' was involved. Phil Roberts edits out those truths in his inflammatory and scurrilous posting.

I say good for Rev Cooper. He is only human and he has erred. I am, however sure that God will forgive him. Shame on you all for so publicly bashing the bishop!

Phil Roberts puts his finger on the nub of the problem with unerring accuracy.
If Carl had swung the other way, he would have been in with a good chance to succeed that other Welshman at Canterbury.
But as he is a hetero, he has to go.

Very sad news, Bishop Carl is a very good person and very dynamic and intelligent, fluent Welsh speaker, dont understand why he had to resign, hope he gets something else significant to do.
Tristwch, Knighton, Powys
It is really sad that a bright, caring, energetic person should be treated like this by colleagues and the Church in Wales. Bishop Carl did many good things in his Diocese. He was liked by many people. He also spoke excellent Welsh. I also feel very sorry for the Revd Potter-Williams.
Tristwch, Trefyclo, UK
It is quite a coincidence that both the Bishop and his chaplain, the alleged object of his affection, have split from their partners at the same time. It would be interesting to read the Bishop's sermons dealing with marriage. Many clergy must face the same problems as Bishop Cooper.
Des, Edinburgh,
He's a lightweight - like all of them, and particularly the Archbishop.
Michael Davis, Monmouth,
The most shocking aspect of this is that the statements issued by the Archbishop of Wales and the Diocese of St David's contain not a word of thanks to Carl Cooper for his ministry as bishop in St David's diocese and in previous posts. He has had a caring and innovative ministry and deserves better.
Gethin Rhys (Revd), Pontypridd, Cymru
Bishop Carl has done a great deal to enrich the life of his Diocese. He has constantly challenged and encouraged us. Recently he has shown great care and kindness to me, a priest who has struggled with ill health. He will be greatly missed by many of his clergy and laity.
Rev J Hugh A James, Vicar of Kidwelly, Kidwelly, Wales
Amazing really - Anglican Priest leaves his wife and has an affair with a man and gets promoted to Bishop. Anglican Bishop has a relationship with a woman and has to resign.
Can we have equal treatment for all clergy please?
Phil Roberts, Kelsall, England
It is with a very heavy heart that I read and hear this news .Carl as I know him has been a friend of mine for more than 30 years .This I believe is as a result of people presuming that they also own the private lives of our high position people .Sorry Carl, Lois Benning Surrey
lois davies, New Haw , surrey
Bishop Carl should have stayed. This moral judgement is a nonsense and should be ignored. Given a few months he could have sorted out his own affairs. Meddling priests yet again. Scuppering women Bishops against the best wishes of church members was another of their reactionary backward moves.
Boris, London, UK
If they've had an affair, they have violated the rules that they espouse. I don't think any lying, cheating, disrespectful hypocrite - he or she - should keep their position.
You represent a religion and follow it to the letter, or you get out.
Helen E., London, UK
I agree with Kim - the article seems too tabloidesque. I doubt if this really equates with what the congregations in Wales actually think. They are certainly more mature than suggested.
Stephen Pain, odense, denmark
Anyone who takes a look at the episcopal teamsheet of the Anglican church and comes to the conclusion that such indiscretions are the inevitable result of 'virile' males needs their eyes tested.
Gwilym Davies, London, UK
"his loss as a Welsh speaker will be felt keenly in a province that struggles to find good clergy and bishops to serve its dwindling congregations"
This comment is so offensive to the many good clergy, who work tirelessly for the Church in Wales, and thanks - but my congregation is thriving!!
Kim, Wales,
I sincerely hope that the Clergy involved in the removal of Bishop Carl are now happy in the knowledge that they have lost us one of the best Bishops we are ever likely to see in this diocese. I sincerely hope they will not force Rev Mandy Williams-Potter out too.

These Bishops are only human so to expect a virile male not take advantage his alpha position....well, it would take a saint wouldn't it?
