Nearly three quarters of Christians think that God is male, compared with less than half of the general population, according to a poll.
Six out of ten people believe that all religion is fundamentally sexist, but more than two out of three people think that there is still a place for religion in modern life.
The research was carried out by Populus for the Movement for Reform Judaism, to mark the publication of its new prayer book, or siddur, today.
For the first time the Reform movement will use gender-neutral language to refer to God and will give female figures in the Bible, such as Sarah and Rachel, equal prominence to males.
About a quarter of Britain's 300,000 Jewish people are affiliated to the Reform movement, which takes a liberal approach on issues such as homosexuality.
About six out of ten believe that God is male and only one in a hundred believes that She is female. Only four out of ten thought it right that God should be referred to solely as “He”.

The new siddur is modern and fresh and below all the prayers are explainations of their roots and there is also transliteration from the hebrew. It helps people to connect to, engage with and challenge their faith. The MRJ is leading progressive jewry in the UK in such a positive direction!
Deborah, London, UK
I strongly believe that there is a feminine persona within the godhead. The leading contender is what is called God's Shekhinah. It was this Glory, or God's presence on Earth, which dwelt within the Holy of Holies within the Jewish Temple.
Bill Stanley, Vidor, USA
A problem with gender neutral terms, especially their exclusive use, is that some of the personal dimensions of our understanding of God are not thereby included. God is Father and Mother: Jesus is motherly (water-blood from side); Holy Spirit can be called She; Mary reveals femininity of God.
Richard L.A. Schaefer, Dubuque,Iowa, USA
I think you'll find that Church attendence is down because religion is so behind the times, not because it keeps up!
Roger, Oxford,
Who is this "God" person, anyway?
Andrew Milner, Karuizawa, Japan
And they wonder why Church attendances are down? Political correctness has no place in religion!
What was once a huge strong religion is being dragged down by the flacid PC brigade. Become strong and people will follow!
Pete, St Albans, England
Did god make man in his own image? Or woman in her own image? Always wondered. But at least we know god has two legs, two arms, a nose etc. As to the rest of him/her, I'll leave that to the imagination.
(That's where god is anyway - in people's imagination, I mean. )
alan, germany,
What about all the people who said - God is a figment of your imagination so who cares?
Alison, London,
In this modern world where Jewish contribution exceeds what one would expect from their small numbers,it is appropriate that an "update" should occur, for if a female can become president or prime- minister, they should be able to have the same say and office under God.(Note to Catholics and Muslims)
nathan, fort lauderdale, USA
Chris from Slough - a ridiculous argument. Everyone knows, for example, that the giant turtle on whose back the earth rested until it flicked us up a couple of inches (on its scale) is male.
Chris Jackson, London,
You need to be corporeal to have gender. We use male personal pronouns for God because English doesn't have a gender-neutral one and now it is simply traditional to say He.
Liam, Stoke, UK
From my rudimentary knowledge of that great work of fiction that is The Bible, God created us in His image. That would make Him Male then? An omnipresent male.... now thats multitasking
phil mann, newcastle upon tyne,
Didn't God make 'man' in his own image?
L Davies, Cardiff, UK
Should Jesus have said Parent instead of Father.
PC Gone Mad yet again.
Peter, Birmingham, UK
Surely only things that actually exist can have a gender.
Chris, Slough,
Aren't believers supposed to be following the word of God? So these reforms, have they been asked for by God? Or perhaps they are saying that the old school has been wrong all this time? Or could these reforms be an attempt not to lose too many members and so not lose their political influence?
Matt, Antibes, France
No Simon Newton, 'on the seventh day God rested'. thus eliminating any sexual reference at all. Simple, neat and intelligent. Well done Reform Judaism
Jay, London,
God has been referred to in gender neutral terms for centuries within Judaism. As for Christianity, Jesus referred to God as Father, so there is a history of male pronouns from the very start.
Personally, I believe God to be genderless, but still call Him Father.
Jennifer Hynes, Plymouth, England
So are they going to call God "it" or "he/she" - as in "on the seventh day it rested"?
Simon Newton, Birmingham,
