The Archbishop of York yesterday made an impassioned intervention in the debate on the ordination of women bishops on the eve of a crucial vote on the issue by a bitterly divided Church of England.
Speaking at the church’s General Synod in York, John Sentamu said that Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was being made a scapegoat by traditionalists who blame him for opening up divisions in the Anglican communion over women priests and gays.
His comments came as the church was warned that it was in danger of “shattering” in the wake of tomorrow’s historic vote on a proposal to consecrate women.
Some members of the synod urged a postponement of the vote until more detailed proposals could be drawn up on how to cater for opponents.
Some bishops have held covert talks in Rome on possible arrangements to join the Catholic church should the General Synod go ahead with women bishops. “It has all been very cloak and dagger,” said a source.
Sentamu said it had “grieved” him deeply to hear the “ungracious personalisation” of the issue in the criticisms made of Williams, who has been accused of failing to provide adequate leadership.
Traditionalists have accused the Archbishop of Canterbury of fomenting schism by failing to discipline the liberal American bishops who consecrated Gene Robinson, the openly gay bishop of New Hampshire, in 2003.
“The accusations and inferences of what has been said by some are not only ungenerous and unwarranted but they describe a person I don’t recognise as Rowan,” said Sentamu.
Such a strong statement of support is unprecedented and the fact that Sentamu felt it necessary to make it illustrates how deep the church’s difficulties go.
Prudence Dailey, a lay member of the synod from Oxford, warned: “We are not talking about a clean schism. We are talking about a shattering of the church, right now.”

Get over it Archbishop, The family law issue is far more important and more relavent to modern living then this pointless nonesence! If the clergy put their efforts more into this issue much of societies ill's would be healed and is it not what the church (all faiths) should be trying to do?
Dave Farmer, Broxbourne, England
Are you sure this is really about women bishops? I've seen Gene Robinson's name mentioned several times in stories about this, but Katherine Jeffords Schori goes unmentioned.
It's not about women.
It's about who gets to say what a valid relationship is--to God, and to the rest of us.

Rowan Williams MAY have been a respected academic, but he was ignorant of the practical needs for pastoral care. Worse, like most arrogant academics, he believed that although he had no experience, that he was a competent administrator. That overweening pride directly led to Anglican disaster.

The issue is whether there will be a Christian church at all unless the march of islam is not halted. Who is a Bishop is irrelavant. One thing is for sure, if islam becomes the dominant religion there will be no gay clergy and no women Bishops.

Little has changed in 2000 years - a church obsessed with sexuality, divided, every sect and faction claiming to have the correct interpretation of the teachings of Jesus and the Bible, reviling their brethren, denying the message of love, and ignoring the real issues in this tortured world of ours.

I expect the Hindu people are laughing their heads off over this internal spat amongst the Anglican clergy. The Hindu religion has no head office, Hindu Archbishops or Popes and no bishops. Basically it all boils down to whether, as anglicans, you wish to follow the bible as it is written or not.

Tradionalists / Taleban could somebody explain the difference please.

I wish the church put as many man-hours into alleviating world wide suffering in war zones as they did into the gay/woman clergy issue.
Jesus went out and talked about stuff of importance; to make people's lives better. The church just seems like another bickering organisation obsessed with politics

I'm sorry, but Rowan williams was appointed to further the liberal agenda on women and Gay priests within the CofE.What has happened was always bound to happen as long as faithfull Anglicans stuck to the core 39 articles. What the liberals want is female dominated paganism!

It is really Tony Blair's fault. A very nice irony that he became a Catholic. The Anglican communion is doomed.
Doomed!!!!

Rowan Williams is a big disappointment. He is not a strong leader. He is ignoring the teachings of Jesus.
Sue, Southampton, UK
Sadly, Rowan Williams may be a good man but he is a very poor leader. When faced with open rebellion by the American Church, he let them foment their seditious false doctrine instead of stating clearly that their beliefs are not Christian. He has truly sewed the wind and reaped the whirlwind.
