The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has challenged an American woman bishop to produce evidence to back up her claim that bishops beat their wives.
Other bishops also criticised the US Episcopal Church's Bishop Catherine Roskam after she said at the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury that men beat women "because they can".
She said: "We have 700 men here. Do you think any of them beat their wives? Chances are they do. The most devout Christians beat their wives... many of our bishops come from places where it is culturally accepted to beat your wife."
About 670 bishops, nearly all men, are at the Lambeth Confernce in Canterbury, Kent. A further 230, mainly from Africa, have boycotted it because of the liberal direction of the Western church on homosexuality and other issues.
Bishop Roskam's comments are published in the latest edition of The Lambeth Witness, a daily newsletter produced by the Inclusive Church Network, a liberal lobby group working for the full inclusion of gays in Church life.
Bishop Roskam, a suffragan in New York, was speaking as bishops and their wives spent the day discussing violence against women. She said: "Economic downturn increases violence toward women, but you also find violence against women in the richest of households. You can't say it's only the poor who do it."
Her remarks provoked dismay and astonishment among bishops at the conference.
The Archbishop of York said: "I have never beaten my wife, although I can't talk about other people." He warned against a danger of "stereotyping" people because of the culture they come from. He said that Bishop Roskam should not throw out "aunt Sallies" which become divisive. "I hope Bishop Catherine has got statistics and figures, because if not she is in danger of causing an unnecessary rumpus. I find guilt by association very difficult." He said there was an assumption that because a person was a man, they must therefore be guilty of beating their wife. "You have to be extremely careful. People should stop putting labels on members of our family without evidence."
Bishop Nathaniel Nakwatumbah of Namibia said: "I do not beat my wife. That is ridiculous. There are such great people gathering here in ecclesial spirit. It is inconceivable that a bishop would beat his wife."
Bishop Zache Duracin of Haiti said: "I do not know any bishops who beat their wives. But she may be aware of some."
Bishop David James, of Bradford, said: "I do not beat my wife who I love very much and who is a tremendous support to me. Of the bishops I have met from around the world, which is quite a number, I have no reason to suspect that any of them do. Of course with 800 bishops you cannot be sure, and nor do I know if any of the wives beat their husbands. A lot of bishops could not do the job we do without the really sacrificial support of our wives."

Me say "Female prelates beat up husbands". Women beat up men so there must be some ugly old hag of a female bishop who is verbally and/or physically abusing her husband...or more probably her lesbian life partner.
Bill, Nottingham, UK
Yeah Catherine let's set up a straw man to distract everyone from the real issues of Lambeth: The authority of Scripture and how the American Episcopal Church is taking the Anglican Communion down the crapper. Sorry...We're not buying it.
TMcGillicuddy, Medway, USA
Christians still sin. Paul wrote about still doing things he shouldn't and not doing the things he should. It would be a miracle if none of the bishops gathered at Lambeth from only the US had never abused someone, let alone the rest of the Communion. The other bishops need to pay attention to this.
Robert Chapman, Everett, WA, USA
I have been reading with great interest the news coming out of Lambeth. That the Catholic cardinal said what he said about holy orders and women is not surprising. Has any anglican ask the question... what if it is true that the The Church has no authority to confer holy orders upon women.Think!

Spouse Abuse a Two-Way Street, by Warren Farrell, Ph.D. USA Today, 6/29/94"However, when 54% of women in lesbian relationships acknowledge violence in their current relationship, vs. only 11% of heterosexual couples reporting violence, I realized that domestic violence is not an outgrowth of male biology."
Mari, Kalamazoo, MI US
The only violent relationship I have ever had was with the only Christian I have been out with. I met him in Church. He is now a lay preacher. He admitted that he had been violent to his first wife, including rape. Domestic violence exists in all sectors of Society. The Church is no exception

What on earth is she trying to say? That African bishops beat their wives, so TEC shouldn't have to listen to them complain about TEC's total abandonment of morality and fairness, enforced by lawsuit? Is she quite right upstairs? Amongst 100+ TEC bishops, some must surely be deranged.
Delaney, London, UK
while I can agree with the comments on the statistical probabilities--- women are also abusers---especially of children--- they are the number one perps for child abuse. The real story here is the timing---interestingly women's episcopal ordination is one of the current and divisive issues-Hmmm!
Susan, Wauconda, USA
I've been with say ten woman half of whom thought it was ok to hit me to the point of bruising "because you've annoyed me". Try using that as an excuse if you hit a woman. Violence against the person is generally by women on men/children and I can understand why men snap after years of such abuse.
John , Dundee, UK
I think Bishop Catherine perhaps could have been more precise that in a gathering of that many men, statistically it is likely that it has occurred, bishops not being immune from the human condition.
Paul S. Davison, Perry, Georgia, USA
The Global South are the ones who are overly represented. Perhaps you ought to check what Chane actually said - he didn't label the Africans "demonic" - he said that the Global South Anglicans and their Western friends are demonising the Americans just because they're working for an inclusive church
Nicholas, Lincoln, UK
She did not say Bishops beat their wives - but that it is statistically likely that some might. 1 in 4 women are battered - and I know some who are bishops wives. Go to any women's shelter and see for yourself.
Ann, Lander, USA
If you have 700 men, statictically some of them will be spouse abusers. Unfortunately, a person being a Christian, or a bishop, or a doctor, or whatever, is not a guarantee that person won't be a spouse or child abuser. It happens among all people. That's what Bp. Roskam was saying.
Sue, New York,
More of the same from the overly represented TEC. They can not conduct an intellectual arguement on their hypocrisies, so they fall back on slander and inuendo. First Chane labels African Anglicans "demonic", an old world, racist smear, and now Bishop Roskam inserts this latest bit of discrimination
Jenny, Grand Rapids, MI US
