A Muslim creationist has succeeded in getting the website of leading atheist Richard Dawkins banned in Turkey after he complained that its contents were blasphemous.
Internet users living in Turkey are now subject to a court order which prohibits them from accessing the popular site richarddawkins.net . The court in Istanbul issued its judgement after author Adnan Oktar claimed Atlas of Creation, a book he has written which contests arguments on evolution, had been defamed on Dawkins' website.
The court ordered that Turk Telekom block access to the site. Since the weekend, Turkish internet users seeking the site have been redirected to a page that says in Turkish "access to this site has been suspended in accordance with a court decision".
NTV reported that Oktar complained he and his creationist book Atlas of Creation had been defamed by comments made by Dawkins on the site. In July, Professor Dawkins wrote on his site: "I am at a loss to reconcile the expensive and glossy production values of this book with the breathtaking inanity of the content."
In Atlas of Creation, one headline over a lengthy article states: "The theory of evolution, first proposed under the primitive conditions of the 19th century, has been disproved by advances in science and technology. It has been recognised that Darwin's claims are totally unrealistic."
Thousands of copies of the books were distributed to schools in some countries in Europe. Earlier this year, Mr Oktar, who uses the pen name Harun Yahya, also attempted to have Dawkins' book The God Delusion banned in Turkey but the case was thrown out. Last summer he persuaded a court in Turkey to block access to blogs on wordpress.com after claiming that several carried defamatory comments. Mr Oktar is also appealing against a three-year prison sentence imposed for creating an illegal organisation for personal gain.
Commentors on Dawkins' website were today unrepentant. One said: "Another reason not to allow Turkey full accession to the European Union, repressive Islamic regimes don't deserve any favours from the enlightened West." Another wrote: "Seriously! Some guy made a book. The book was criticized on a website, now the entire country of Turkey cannot go to that website? WOW..."
Mr Oktar is also unrepentant. In his latest article on hs own website, he weighs in in support of Professor Michael Reiss, the Anglican clergyman and biologist who has resigned as director of education of the Royal Society after the row over his remarks advocating the teaching of Creationism in science classes.
Mr Oktar says: "No matter how Darwinist circles announce apologising ecclesiastical statements or try to oppose the teaching of creation in schools, the outcome will still be the same. People will continue to believe that chance never created anything and that the theory of evolution has deceived the world, and that it is a comprehensive lie used to mislead the public."

Science and religion are not mutually exclusive, but I really cringe when creationists try to impose their fantasies on others.
As science makes progress in explaining how things really work, religion has to adapt and accommodate because its only foundation is in myth and hearsay.
