1. How long have you been a graffiti artist?
Thirteen years. My transition towards Christian-based graffiti began in 2003,
with a spiritual enlightenment from God.
2. What got you into graffiti in the first place?
In 1995 I saw a mural painted in my local town. It must have been at least a
few years old, but had gone previously unnoticed. I remember the colours of
the mural being vibrant. At first I couldn't read the mural, so I began to
study it on a daily basis to and from school. Eventual I cracked the
wildstyle graffiti letters, and to my amazement, they said: "The
Anderson's". It was so intriguing that I decided to copy the letters
and sketch/write something in my school book. Ironically the first thing I
wrote in this graffiti style was the name of my church "St Boniface".
3. How did you come to faith?
I grew up in a Roman Catholic family and went to church regularly so I was
always within the right environment for spiritual development. My faith
began from an early age, I always felt the presence of God and knew he would
guide me in life.
4. What role does the Bible play in your faith?
The Bible was and is a key part in my faith. In 2003 I went through some
spiritual troubles. So I picked up my Bible and began to read it more
frequently. Within the course of a few months my life changed from being
negative to positive. This positive change was not only in me but also those
around me. The Bible is very important source for everyone's faith. When we
sometimes go to church a priest may provide in interpretation of a passage
from the Bible which is great. However his view may not work for everyone.
If you read the Bible, you are going directly to the source. Whatever you
read will relate directly to you and your life. If there is anything you
don't understand ask God and I promise you'll be given the answer. Sometimes
a simple prayer will suffice. If you don't like praying just ask. God is
never far from you.
5. What was the message of your graffiti before you became a Christian?
From 1995 until 2003, my graffiti was more about focusing on my individual
graffiti style and getting up as much as possible. At the time this meant
bombing/tagging, painting trains and painting track sides. Not to create any
missunderstanding I was always a Christian. Whether we are good or bad God
lives in us all. For many, God is the missing part of life.
6. What is the message now?
Graffiti now is about using the gift God gave me to do something positive. My
work is no longer about me. The work is now a message, not only Christians
but for people of all faiths and all walks of life. My faith definitely
played a big part in my transition from traditional artist to my current
status. In 2003 God saved and changed my life for the better. What I do now
is my own personal thank you to God.
7. Where can we see your graffiti now? And where did you graffiti before?
Before my graffiti was on trains, track sides and in the streets. Now you can
view some of my work on the Internet. Simply type in Lovepusher on Flickr.
8. Do you do commissions? What have you been asked to do and where?
I was recently commissioned by the UK and Foreign Bible Society to paint two
ad vans depicting stories from the Bible. This took place in two areas of
England: Nottingham and Bristol.
9. When do you do graffiti and with what materials?
I live graffiti everyday in some form or another. For sketching, I use pens
and pencils. When I paint, usually I use some form of emulsion and spray
paint. With so little, you can do and express so much.
