A female vicar who told colleagues that she went on swinging holidays in the South of France and who turned up drunk to church services has been banned from practising for 12 years by the Church of England.
The Rev Teresa Davies, from Daventry, Northamptonshire, was found guilty of inappropriate conduct at a tribunal in London yesterday.
Mrs Davies was said to have told two church colleagues at a Christmas lunch in 2006 that she and her husband had spent holidays without their children in the South of France, in an area that she said was noted for “the casual exchange of sexual partners”.
The tribunal also heard that Mrs Davies, 37, and her husband had posted under the name “Tess and Mick, Daventry” on swinging websites.
After the lunch Mrs Davies sent an e-mail to one of her colleagues, the Rev Canon Owen Page, saying that she had “probably loaded you with too much information”. She told the other clergyman, the Rev Peter Davis, who gave her a lift home after the lunch: “I think I have said too much.”
Later she told her archdeacon that she had been drinking and was trying to be shocking. She also said that she had never had any sexual relationship outside her marriage. She admitted to the tribunal that this was incorrect.
The tribunal said: “Clergy who commit sexual misconduct have to be dealt with firmly and in a way which would protect those who could be harmed if the respondent were otherwise allowed to remain in ministry.”
It added that she still had no appreciation of the seriousness of the findings against her, or of the damage caused.
Mrs Davies was suspended from her position as a team vicar in May last year and resigned in September. She did not attend the hearing.

To Carl from Jarrow: There is 'probably' no God? That is a position of enormous faith. Atheism does not mean that you can do whatever you like, surely? I agree that this woman should lose her job. She would probably have lost her job if she had been a headteacher or a politician too.
Tim Dawson, Sheffield, UK
Lets be honest , the church has never been comfortable with sex, simply because we are mammals and are driven by our desires. There's probably no God, just enjoy your life and get on with it.

Even if you do ignore the swinging, she turned up to work drunk. She had a responsibility, and she blew it off. That alone is reason enough to fire her.
It doesn't matter whether she committed a crime; she is not being charged with one. She is simply charged with being stupid and irresponsible.
Edgar Greenberg, Longyearbyen, Svalbard,
Victorian prudery is alive and well. Sex between informed, consenting adults cannot be sinful. The only real sin is harming others. No harm, no sin. It's not adultery if you have permission to do it.
Joe, Winchester,
I can't believe how many people are defending the lady.
She lied; had extra-marital sex; doesn't think it was wrong and isn't sorry for it (no repentence) - but for most here this kind of morality is fine!
Simply underlines how far secular values have drifted from Christian ones.

A consenting adult breaking no law - what business is it of anyone?
Hopefully she will now see the the way, the light and the truth and become an atheist.
She got off lightly - Sharia law would have her stoned to death.
Carl, Jarrow, UK
I agree with the church's reaction but also with Simon, from London's comments about the Bishop of Southwark's appalling behaviour which was left unpunished. Total hypocrisy & institutional sexism.
Can you imagine if it was a black vicar & a white bishop?
Victoria, London, UK
What ever happened to grace and forgiveness? It makes it sound as if there's not much room for sinners in the C of E.
Jon, London,
There's probably no god. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.
Chris Hall, London, UK
Come on, this isn't being a good role model. There always comes a moment when you choose whether to give into temptation or not. She knew she was risking losing her job and home when she booked the holiday. Forgive Tess? Yes. Let her keep her job? No
Andy Barnes, Reading, UK
She obviously has issues as she has admitted. Perhaps a dose of forgiveness or at least the granting of one last chance might have been a better show of Christian mores. Any how she'll probably make a great RE teacher.
Kevin, London,
Those people who do not claim the bible to have authority over their lives are welcome to live as they please within the law. Those who preach the bible's message to others must face the consequences if they behave as this vicar did. This is a very serious matter and she had to go.
David, Sutton, UK
Come on - life and hypocrisy go hand in hand - why pick on religion? If the church failed to be consistent with its own ethics, even if you don't like them, that would be hypocritical too. I don't know the details of the case - and neither do you - so lets avoid the tired old hypocrisy line!
Kenneth, Porlcok, UK
It's Hearsay, not Heresy...
David Troon, Scargill, Scotland
I agree with Des, she should not be sentenced. Her actions will probably bring the youth back to hear her preach. Imagine the ,hic, fun.
Brian P O Cinneide, eThekwini, Afrika Borwa
In recent memory, the Bishop of Southwark got very drunk, broke into a car and was found throwing childrens' toys. He kept his high-profile job.
This young woman, a junior cleric, broke no law and injured no third party. She been fired, loosing her home in the process no doubt.
Simon, London,
I know that religion and hypocrisy go hand in hand; but Mrs Davies has committed no crime. I cannot see why she should be hounded out of her job.
Des, Edinburgh,
