It is a striking but typically English church. Typical, except for the fact that it sits on the 21st floor of a skyscraper in the Japanese city of Osaka.
Couples who have married at All Saints in the Herefordshire village of Brockhampton would find the interior curiously familiar, too. The Japanese developers who created the sky-high chapel have made a perfect copy of the pointed-arched interior of the parish church, even down to the pews.
The Grade I listed building near Ross-on-Wye, one of the most important Arts and Crafts churches in Britain, was re-created as a Japanese wedding chapel after a party of tourists saw it during a sightseeing tour.
The original All Saints was designed by the mystic writer and architect W. R. Lethaby and paid for by an American heiress at the turn of the 20th century.
The copy occupies two floors of the English-themed Monterey Grasmere Hotel to meet the demand for “English-style” wedding ceremonies. It has been fully booked since it opened in July despite costing £8,000 to hire — compared with £400 for the real one.
The Rev Will Pridie, vicar of the original All Saints, said: “The attention to detail is quite staggering. Even the slightest imperfections and marks on the stonework have been reproduced. The stained-glass windows are all exactly the same and they’ve even built a scaled-down bell tower with a bell, which is rung on wedding days.”
Mr Pridie was approached by the Japanese developers European Connections Ltd after the group visited the church last August. He said: “The developers said a group of Japanese tourists were visiting Britain and they stumbled across our church by mistake.
“One of the group was a developer and was so taken with the church he decided to build an exact replica. English-style weddings are apparently extremely popular in Japan and our church captured their imagination.
“The Parochial Church Council agreed to have the church reproduced and the developers came with laser cameras and computers and examined the church inch by inch.”
Japanese couples can now get married in civil ceremonies in the replica church, which even includes an exact copy of the churchyard and railings that circle the original.
A spokesman for Monterey Grasmere Hotel said: “Young Japanese couples love themed weddings and the hot style at the moment is the traditional English church wedding.
“The ceremonies are civil but the registrar wears a dog collar and confetti is thrown afterwards. The service is as authentic as possible.
“The church has been block-booked since it opened in July and we are already taking bookings for weddings up to the end of next year.”
