Do you dream of being able to visit Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry instead of just reading the books or seeing the films? Do you ache to swoop through the air like a swallow in a game of Quidditch, or visit Dumbledore’s office, or stroll through the Forbidden Forest? You do?
Then, rather fittingly, a fairy in Florida has waved a magic wand to make your wish come true. Plans are afoot to open a Harry Potter theme park in Orlando, a broom-ride from Disneyworld. With J. K. Rowling’s blessing, Warner Brothers and Universal Studios will bring her creation to life on a 20-acre park in 2009.
The plan has been kept a tight secret until today, stoking speculation about which other theme parks might also be on the drawing board. Rumours suggest the imminent unveiling of Gordonworld, a kingdom in which an enigmatic ruler, Burly Brown, governs with an iron fist yet mysteriously vanishes whenever trouble is brewing and for which he fears he might draw blame.
Racing to finalise its building programme (the necessary finance has been raised) is Cameron Country. Nobody seems to have much idea what will be the central theme of this fairground, or what lies in store for the public, but visitors will leave each ride with a warm and fuzzy feeling.
Blearsville is a compact theme park in its final assessment stage. It may yet proceed if its backers can identify any potential attractions beyond tap-dancing, grin-a-thons and walking on stilts.
Plans for Parisland had looked promising, but its organisers seem undecided whether to set it in a sea of decadence or in a prison yard. AlanSugar-World had been mooted, but the developers proved so inept or irritating they were all fired.
