Rarely has his message been as blunt. Denouncing support for terrorism, arming of Iraqi militias and attempts to place the Middle East “under the shadow of a nuclear holocaust”, President Bush accused Iran of threatening the security of nations everywhere. America, he insisted, would “confront this danger before it is too late”. Within hours of his tough message, US forces in Iraq had arrested eight Iranians, searched their luggage and confiscated their Iraqi escort’s weapons before releasing them. American commanders are taking no chances. They know that Iran is smuggling men and weapons into Iraq in huge quantities, arming not only Shia militias but also rival Sunni groups with the express aim of harassing and killing coalition troops.
Iran has made no secret of its malevolent intention to destabilise Iraq and fill the resulting vacuum. President Ahmadinejad boasted earlier this week that the Americans were on the run, and said that when they pulled out they would leave an opening for his forces. “Today you are prisoners in your own quagmire,” he said, demonstrating the hubris that, since the fall of Saddam Hussein, has increasingly marked Iranian behaviour. Some of his top advisers use language even more menacing: the US forces were now “hostages” in Iraq, and would be attacked if the US ordered any military action against Iran, one senior official recently told Western analysts.
Clearly, Iran now believes it can profit from confrontation, which hardliners around President Ahmadinejad appear to be actively seeking. For the past six months, Washington has warned Iran to stop supplying weapons to the insurgents in Iraq. The response has been not only a contemptuous denial but also the dispatch of Iranian Revolutionary Guards to other areas of confrontation. Iranian officials have also admitted that they are supplying weapons to the Taleban in Afghanistan – not because they support these Sunni extremists who were their deadly enemies when in power, but in order to prevent a US and Nato victory that would increase Western influence.
Iran would do well to listen not only to the words but also the tone of Mr Bush’s latest warning. Anger, exasperation and frustration at Iran’s failure to rein in its export of terrorism or to curb its push for a nuclear capability are changing the balance of the debate in Washington. Those who urge further United Nations sanctions, a search for a diplomatic solution and the isolation of Tehran’s hardliners can point to little success. Those who argue that Mr Bush must destroy Iran’s nuclear programme before he leaves office are being balanced by the intense concern in Israel and by Iran’s own arrogant behaviour.
If Iran is deaf to warnings from Washington, it should not ignore the tough new language in Europe. With unambiguous clarity, President Sarkozy said on Monday that a nuclear-armed Iran was unacceptable; unless the world reined in its programme, the only alternative was “an Iranian bomb or the bombing of Iran”. His language was aimed as much at Russia and China as Tehran. Both have posed as Iran’s friends and protectors to shield it from UN sanctions. Both should be realistic. Russia does not want another nuclear power on its southern flank. China is deeply worried about chaos in Afghanistan. It is time thatn it, too, confronted Iran.

All the ordinary people in US or in Europe think of Iran as a monster, but its nothing like it. Believe me you are all under the influence of your own propaganda. Why when a European or American actually arrives in Tehran, he is so surprised ? because he imagined a very different place to what he sees. The problem with you is that you all watch too much Telly.
Accusing Iran or meddling ? What do you do yourself ? You caused 600,000 people to die and wrecked the country. SO where are the WMD's and Where is BIn-Ladan after 5 years ?
Why do you think Iran would ever want to fire an atomic bomb ?
All of you have one and this is good but if Iran has one, then this is bad, why ? In fact those who are on top of the country in Iran are very wise and would never take the world toward a WW III, But it seems that Americans may do so. All the hanging, etc, happens everywhere, dont act as if you dont kill criminals yourself.
Kayvon, Tehran,
A review of recent Iranian dailies show an ever increasing rate of public hanging of people, Imprisonment and violation of anything remotely considered human rights. This comes in the background of a silent ongoing coup de etas by the revolutionary guards. A former commander has become the president and the organization vastly increasing its grip on all aspects of economic social and political power. Brutally suppressing any opposition and spreading the venom of extremist Islamic intolerance across the globe through supporting organizations like Hamas, Hezbollah, meddling in Iraq, and destabilizing Afghanistan. For those who insist on extending boundaries of diplomatic engagement, I warn this regime is capable of executing by hanging in public several hundreds of its own citizens in past few months alone. A nuclear holocaust somewhere in Europe or Israel by Islamic republic of Iran's revolutionary guards is not a potential exaggerated threat take it seriously.

This is not the U.S. public's choice. Our president has become increasingly dangerous and out of it, and I don't believe for one second that the U.S. public is at all ready for military attacks of any kind with another country in the Middle East after the disaster in Iraq.
Hass is right that it is completely bizarre for the U.S., I mean the U.S., to accuse Iran of "meddling" in Iraq. We are occupying Iraq, we've got a puppet government working for us, we are more than meddlers. We've destroyed the country and encouraged the very realignment that we now denounce.
Living in the U.S. right now is to live in a very surreal, strange place with extremely strange political leaders in both parties. But most in the political class who got us into this war are looking desparately for someone to blame. Anything rather than take responsibility for what they enabled. And anything to take the focus off of their failures.

There is no doubt now that Iran will not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons. I don't know if Ahmadinejad actually said that he would invade Iraq, but it is a good covert ploy to get the world behind an Iranian bombing. It also has been indicated by the US Congress in a vote late in the last session that ALL branches of the US government support the supression of Iran's nuclear warfare ambitions AND this indicates that the succeeding US administration will also. IRAN!....wake up!
Jack, Inyokern, California
Henry of Ottowa has a point. The Iranians would probably do anything to escape an invasion of henry clones, with the inevitable depressing consequence of being jawboned and loved to death.
Miki, Sydney,
It would be most irresponsible for George Bush to pull out of Iraq prematurely and hand that country over to radical Moslem Iran. Of course there will be many voices urging him to do just that, but these are either the voices of those who have no understanding of the situation in the Middle East, or of those who support the worldwide expansion of radical Islam. The road back from Iranian control of Iraq will not be easy and decrying the errors that will have brought it upon us will do us no good. The results of expanding radical Islam will be felt everywhere including throughout Europe, the Americas, and of course throughout the Middle East. Some policies are right even if George Bush supports them. Letâs not make a mistake that we will end up lamenting for generations to come. Iran must be stopped and the longer we wait the more costly it will be.

How this US admin get their direction or policy? Is there any group in US that advocate talking to IRAN as suggested by Hamilton Lee recommendation? All I see here is diplomatic fight or military confrontation. US has a lot to benifit by talking to Iran. The idea of regime change can not be implimmented with pressure (neither by sanction nor military). Sanctions will harm Iranian people and turn their west friendly culture against US. Military option will line up all people behind their governent. If US talks to Iran and respect the resulting agrreement (note that US did not respect the Algire accord in early 80's in which do not attmpt to change the regime), the reform and liberals from inside Iran will take care of the regime. The way I see is that the US admin is much more hardline that Iran's government and in turn they strengthen the hands of regime in Iran. When this admin will learn from their mistakes? I expect writters to advocate love and peace not war like necons

It really depends on whose rhetoric you believe. The bare bones are:-
Should Iran ever find a way of delivering a nuclear weapon and use it to nuke Tel Aviv (Jerusalem is bigger but a sacred Muslim Temple precludes that, as if that would matter!)
The consequences of that are horrifying enough, but what follows would be worse.
It is acknowledged that Israel has around 3000 nuclear weapons of varying sizes.
The Israeli reaction to attack is to always strike back, and if it looked as if Israel, as a nation was not going to exist then the country of Iran would disappear off of the face of the earth, and I guess that whilst they were at it, and with nothing to lose, every other major city in every other Arab country in the region would probably get some attention as well!
This is why am so surprised at the Arab nations seemingly careless attitude over Iran and its nuclear ambitions.
Brian Smith, London,
All George Bush had to do was read his father's book that layed out the reason's why he would not invade Iraq. Mainly, that we would put Iraq in the pro-Iranian Shiite column, and take away a bulwark against Iran.
Scott, McLean, Virginia, USA
No proof of a nuclear weapons program in Iran, no proof of Iran's involvement "meddling" in Iraq. But Iran's got OIL and that makes them bad (very bad) and we have to save the world from whatever. It is funny that out of all the countries in the world, only the US and mini-me "Israel" feels threatened by Iran. (Yes we already have > 10000 nuclear warheads and they have none, and we will not tolerate the un/fair balance)
Bob, London,
Well said.
For those who like to throw the term around Ahmadinejad defines the word "war monger".
He is looking likely to get what he's asking for, and he should remember that however incompetent America may be at winning a peace, no country on earth can match Americas ability to flatten an adversary.
Angus Elliott, Cambridge, Canada/Ontario
Do you realize how ironic it is for the UK or US to accuse Iran of "meddling" in Iraq, or of arming the militias in Iraq when hundreds of thousands of US-provided weapons cannot be accounted for? I for one am tired of the same misleading propaganda directed against Iran that was directed agains Iraq.

Do you people have any conscience? Do you recognize that you're working for a company that is actively promoting a terrible war that will engulf much of the world? Are you that stupid that you could just sit there and read this? What will your kids think of you in 20 years when you tell them you used to work for Murdoch's war and hate mongering machine? How can you look at yourself in the mirror day after day going to work for such a sleazy and evil operation? Shame on you and all of your co-workers.
