Do you ever wake up unable to think straight, resulting in your blurting out incoherent chains of words that seem to make no sense? Next time, write those words down. You may have just struck rock gold!
Rock bands are struggling to think of catchy names which don’t sound like they were minted by someone who has just ingested mescalin. So many of the best band names have already been nabbed that lawyers are advising new rock bands to scour the MySpace website, which hosts the pages of thousands of groups, to ensure that they have coined a unique name for themselves – vital both for legal as well as marketing reasons.
It is no longer just parents who are naming their sons “Lychee Tractor Oakleaf Jones” to ensure they will later be able to bag the unique personal domain name LycheeTractorOakleaf.com.
With names like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, U2 and the Killers having given way to Joe Lean & the Jing Jang Jong and I Was A Cub Scout, the quest for novelty is breeding inanity.
There already exists a band called !!!. And another called The The, which must be awkward for fans to Google easily. Also taken already are Archers of Loaf, Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts, and Toad The Wet Sprocket. Chumbawamba became more pronounceable once the band had hit the headlines for dousing John Prescott at a music awards ceremony. The band 57 Devil Babies Born With Tails will always be a mouthful.
The hunt for originality has spawned websites that randomly generate new band names. Wait a second! Random Band Generator would make a great name for a rock group, wouldn’t it?
