Sir Christopher Meyers makes it perfectly clear in his book DC Confidential that regime change was the intention when America proposed the invasion of Iraq.As he was our Ambassador in Washington at the time he was privy to the all diplomatic exchanges. This intention would have been perfectly clear to Blair.
Tha charade of WMD was only a device to engage the United Nations and mislead our Parliment.
Rumsfeldand Cheney where the operational incompetents and Bush carries responsibility for them. These three did not ,in their destructive arragonce, need a pretext for this bloody war and the criminal lack of forsight in the aftermath.Blair did.
In his rush to support America and have his war, and his Thatcher moment in history, Blair needed a cover story for us and Parliment.
Sir Christopher makes it plain the invasion was going ahead whatever Blix found. The long intense sham debate that
Blair led was was just that, a sham.
Sorry about the verbage but I was never good at ticking boxes.
robert everitt, wolverhampton,
This would be an article in the same paper that wholeheartedly supported the invasion, despite Rumsfeld's ineptitude being obvious beforehand..?

Be interesting to know the spin/deception/lies/distortion/exaggeration (strike out as applicable) applied by HMG to GCSE Iraq War.
1. Britain joined the US in invading and occupying Iraq, because
- Tony Blair sincerely believed Saddam had strategic and tactical WMDs
- Better to have US goodwill than US pragmatism or even hostility
- Saddam was selling Iraqi oil in euros from November 2000. If he's been allowed to get away with it, other countries would have joined leading to collapse of the dollar, and world economic chaos
- It seemed like a good idea at the time
2. The real reason for the attack on Iraq was
- WMDs
- Ally of al Qaeda
- Involvement in attacks on 11 September 2001
- Protecting US over-consumptive life style
3. How should individual Brits react now Britain's international reputation has been trashed?
- Wear a black hat and grow a moustache
- Sew an NZ flag on the backpack
- Seek your fortune in the colonies
- Become a third-world aid worker
Hey, I was on a roll.
