American politics does not want for forward planing. Although the Democratic convention will not take place until the end of August and its Republican equivalent will not occur until the outset of September, speculation has already begun on whom Barack Obama and John McCain will select to serve as their vice-presidential candidates. In Mr Obama's case this is a matter that has to be handled carefully as he has yet to wrap up the nomination formally. Mr McCain, whose campaign has been a little starved of attention while the Democratic duel continues, is probably grateful for the publicity this has generated. He has fuelled it over the holiday weekend by meeting three of the contenders, Governor Charlie Crist of Florida, Governor Bobby Jindal (who is of South Asian extraction) from Louisiana and ex-Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts.
Mr Obama's dilemma is straightforward. How can he avoid being stampeded into inviting Hillary Clinton to run with him? That is what much of the Democratic Party wants and it is widely suspected that the Clinton family would accept the role as a consolation prize. While this would secure unity, Mr Obama has plenty of reasons to be wary of the suggestion. The bad blood shed in recent months cannot just be washed away that easily. Having Mrs Clinton on board would seriously compromise the “change” message that has taken him this far and with which he hopes he can travel all the way to the Oval Office. If he won, would he really want her (and him, the husband) present in the same building? If it is not to be Obama-Clinton, would he do better with another woman, such as Governor Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas, or a Clinton supporter, such as Governor Ted Strickland of Ohio?
Mr McCain's conundrum is yet more complicated. His ideal sidekick would be younger than him and manifestly prepared to be the president from the first day (defusing the age issue), have a domestic policy background (the Senator has all the national security kudos he needs himself), be acceptable to conservatives in his party's ranks, ideally offer some diversity of race or gender and be a person whom Mr McCain finds amiable.
It is doubtful whether there is any Republican in the United States who fits all these criteria. Mr Crist, for example, would be a useful ally in winning his home state of Florida, but would he be deemed sufficiently presidential by the media? Mr Jindal's Indian heritage would be a plus but he is 36 years old, only 12 months over the constitutionally required minimum, and half the age of the presidential contender. Mr Romney is probably qualified to serve as the commander-in-chief but millionaire Mormons are not exactly what diversity demands in 2008 and it was evident from the primary contest that Mr McCain could barely stand the sight of him. If a suitable woman senator were available, she would be snapped up in an instant. But those who are available tend to be liberal on abortion, and that would trigger civil war among the Republicans.
So the search is destined to continue for both of these candidates for much longer. And while a good vice-presidential pick is not worth much in votes, a bad one can become an embarrassment. The irony of this situation is that Mr Obama could do with a deputy who looks like Mr McCain, while Mr McCain, in turn, may well obtain most from someone who is similar to Mr Obama.

McCain must pick the best presidential Mitt Romney as his vice president or else he would have little chance of getting all republicans behind him. Picking an Indian would be the kiss of death.
John, Atlanta, GA. USA
Obama should pick Mrs Clinton that would show his true inexperience in his future potential job. All he and she did was say how awful and inexperienced the other one was. And now he is thinking of picking her? Ya right ! don't you think he should pick someone who he likes, admires or believes in ?
Tom Matthews, Murfreesboro, Arkansas, USA
I believe the best choice for Obama's running mate is Gen. Wesley Clark. He's articulate, intelligent and experienced in foreign affairs. Also, his obvious support of Clinton's campaign could help to pull some of her supporters over to Obama's camp. An Obama/Clark ticket would be my "DREAM TEAM"!
Bridget N., Easton, PA, USA
Vote McCain if you want a president to finish the job of destroying the United States so ably begun by George W. Bush. You'll be looking at devolution in another four years. Could that be the solution we're working towards?
Andrew Milner, Karuizawa, Japan
dear Barbara,I plan to vote for McCain unless Obama puts Hillary on the ticket. Should we both stay at home?
Andrew G O'Donnell, Sacramento,, CA .USA
McCain needs to pick Mike Huckabee as VP in order to win.
Eric Troyer, Grove City, USA
A great choice for McCain is Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska. She has solid cred as a conservative, enjoys a popularity rating around 90%, is in her mid-40's. She has a large family with five children, the youngest just arriving in April, the oldest joining the army last year. Tough to top all that
Scott, Seattle, USA
Would Admiral Fallon be a good candidate to put on the possible VP list for Obama? He was forced to retire due to differences with Bush over policies for Iran and Iraq. I am a Republican, white, female, over 65, who has campaigned for Obama and plan to vote for him unless Clinton is attached.
Barbara, Wilmore, Jessamine
President Bush's administration was worse than a joke. Manipulated by financiers and the neo-cons, this bunch expended American blood and treasure to benefit the schemes and greed of a very few. As a conservative, I am truly ashamed that he will be labeled "right wing," for he was far from it.
Sean, Rogers, Texas, USA
Madeleine Albright should be considered as Obama's running mate. Yes, she is younger than John McCain. And smarter. Read about her on Wikipedia - you might be surprised.
Caroline, Hampstead NC, USA
Condi Rice would not touch McCain or want anything to do with the man. He has been tried for money laundering, his friends got him off, but the smell still lingers, after Bush, not a chance. More over McCain will not win, Bush beat him last time look at the Mess Bush made, McCain would do worse.
Daphne Kenward, Cambridge, UK
Depending on how tainted condi rice's reputation is in america, after bush, I think she'd make the ideal candidate.
A well educated and successful black woman - she'd eradicate a lot of the opposition.
peter, york, uk
The only acceptabke VP choice I see for McCain is Mitt Romney. I feel HE is the only one well versed in the economy and ready to BE the President. Conservatives are pulling for Mitt, so McCain, if you want the base..pick Mitt!
Jane, Lincoln, USA
Obama might be stampeded into picking Hillary, but he should be wary of this. Scandal tends to follow the Clintons like night follows day (Remember Whitewater? Travelgate? Vince Foster? The Rose Law Firm billing records? Monica? The end-of-term pardons?) He doesn't need the distraction.
Sam, Hutchinson, Kansas , USA
I do agree with most of your comments that Senator Obama should not select Senator Clinton as his running mate.
The best person I can think of is the much respected and highly decorated Senator Jim Webb of Virginia
It is a dream ticket and I pray that the democrats win the Nov election.
Yashvant, London, England
Its gotta to be Clinton for VP she reaches part of the party he cannot reach and keeps the coalition together. It also avoids a divisive convention.
John Murphy, London, UK
For Barack Obama's VP choices you forgot to mention Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia. Webb, a former military officer, would provide Obama with cover from this angle and also help him with whites. He's also considered a moderate which could help attract Independents.
Mark, Shepherdstown, USA
Much of what comes across in the media, may be spin. But for what I have seen so far of Hillary Clinton, she strikes me as bad NEWS. I have tried to imagine Bill Clinton, and Hillary & Chelsea, and Obama, the more I try to imagine it, the more unlikely it seems. People voting Clinton have no vision.
Daphne kenward, Cambridge, UK
John McCain should pick Condoleeza Rice to be his running mate - therefore neutralizing the election buzz about race and gender and forcing the media and the candidates to focus on the real issues Americans are concerned with.
Carleen Stephens, Battle Ground, WA, USA
McCain chance of winning the general election will depend on how much people are willing to suffer. Falling value of the dollar, how much more they are willing to invest in Iraq, and how low the dollar needs to get before people in America notice their wages going down,& cost of living going up.
Daphne kenward, Cambridge, UK
"Mr Obama's dilemma is straightforward. How can he avoid being stampeded into inviting Hillary Clinton to run with him?"
There are those who feel that it would be a fatal error for Obama if Hillary becomes his Vice President.
Garth Strong, Los Angeles, USA
You are correct, the selection of the VP candidate is critical for both McCain and Obama. Usually the VP slot is a meaningless position, but this time around the game has changed.
My independent vote will be given based who is the VP candidate not just on McCain or Obama.
Peter Brooks, Palm Bay, Florida USA
