Sir, You report (May 24) that the “millionaire timeshare fraudster John Palmer will keep more than £33 million that should have been confiscated, after blunders by Court of Appeal judges”.

The case involved many “blunders” (what sounds to me like a euphemism for criminal negligence), including the fact that the paper served on Palmer “referred to the wrong section of an Act”.

We are not, however, advised of the name of the person who made this extremely expensive mistake or the names of those well-paid people in the chain of command who endorsed the error, or those responsible for the other mistakes in the case, which have cost the hard-pressed taxpayer the equivalent of the salaries of so many police officers, nurses or teachers.

Had the guilty parties been employed in a private enterprise, such as banking, no doubt their names and photos would have been splashed all over the newspapers.

Sir, David Blunkett, we are told, is on track to undermine our judicial system (letters, May 22).

Today we read that the Appeal Court (no less) “misunderstood and misapplied” the law, thereby allowing a criminal to hang on to £33 million. My money’s with Blunkett.
