Royal engagements in 2006

Sir, I have carried out a survey of the official engagements undertaken by the Royal Family during 2006 as reported in the Court Circular.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, aged 80 and 85 respectively, have continued with virtually the same number of engagements as in 2005. Prince William carried out 13 engagements during his year at Sandhurst, and Prince Harry 6. The Duke of York was again busy travelling abroad as special representative for trade and investment which accounted for 199 engagements. Many of the Earl of Wessex’s overseas engagements were on behalf of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

I should again emphasise that the table of figures should not be converted into a “league table” of individual performance. All engagements differ as to time and content and there is also the time taken in preparation.

Except for Christmas Day and Easter Day, the Queen never has a day off from the official red boxes that pursue her everywhere.
