Sir, I am rector of five churches in Anglesey. On February 21 I received by post five identical large packages from the Welsh Assembly, each with a glossy 24-page brochure as “a guide to those in control of premises” — in my case churches only as we have no church halls — instructing me to comply with the new smoke-free law by April 2 this year by displaying three notices forbidding smoking in each church, advice on formulating and enforcing a smoke-free policy and an order form for more materials.

I am to refer those who cannot refrain from lighting up in my churches to a service providing “cessation support” — I thought this is what I offered after a death.

I was fuming at this waste of time and money but then I realised that God has a sense of humour: February 21 was Ash Wednesday
